Alas, true love has brought me “south” where I still maintain my penchants for pretty shoes, wine, crossword puzzles, cherry blossoms, and the Mets. I own more sunglasses than a normal person should and don’t eat red meat (though I make up for it by eating my weight in sushi). I tend to be a big planner who likes to get things started early, but generally end up being indecisive and procrastinating when it comes down to it. I have a (not so) secret crush on Chris Carrabba, but my loyalty and love ultimately goes to the future hubs, of course! Together, my Foxy man and I love to discuss (read: debate) politics and current events, have Mario Kart and Scrabble duels, and just laugh. A lot. We’re hoping and planning for a laid back, fun, summery, rustic vibe to our June wedding that will be genuinely “us” – that is, if we finally make some decisions. Huzzah!

New Family Traditions

November 28th, 2011 @ 5:44 am by Miss Fox

After writing this post, I realized Miss Mole just wrote something along the same lines; great minds think alike! This holiday season is a bit different for Foxy and me, and I wanted to share it with you:

Growing up, I would split Thanksgiving (and Christmas, for that matter) between my mom and my dad. In college, I would generally spend Thanksgiving with my mom, Christmas with both, and New Year’s with my dad. Since I’ve been with Foxy, it’s been Thanksgiving at my mom’s, Christmas at the future in-laws, and New Year’s at my dad’s.

Lost yet? Just remember: Thanksgiving at mom’s in NY.

Well, since I no longer live at home or a mere two hour drive away (as I did in college), holiday time generally means one main thing: traveling. Anyone who goes a distance to go home for the holidays knows that traveling = traffic. And I? Have no. tolerance. for traffic.

After some terrible experiences these past few years (like a 4.5 hour trip taking 10 HOURS), Foxy and I put our foot (feet?) down.

The message was relayed to Foxy Mama that if she wanted to spend Turkey Day with us, she’d have to come down to MD instead of us going up to NY. That is, if we moved and had room. Which we have and we now do!

So this year, in the spirit of possibly starting a new “new family” tradition, Foxy and I hosted a joint Thanksgving/Friendsgiving, since some of our closest foxy friends decided not to travel home this year either. It was us, my mom and stepdad, his two kids, and a few of our friends—one (two, if you count the hubs) of whom I actually met and have gotten close with via a Weddingbee meet-up a while back (I’m talking about you, miss EAQ219! Obvs.)!

One of the bajillion amazing things to come from Weddingbee for me!

(Oh, and her hubs and Foxy have a total bromance thing going on. It’s cute.)

Who knows if this will be a repeat event, but I’m holding out hope that it will be. You think I stopped at planning our wedding? I helluva love planning anything and hosting people at our house. It’s a bit nuts, actually. I’m cool with it.

What about you? Have you started any new family traditions since you’ve been with your other half?

I’d love to have a Friendsgiving! When we move into a house, I’m going to try to get Mr. Mink’s family to come to us. We usually go to his mother’s at the beach, but it’s getting crowded and his mother deserves a break!

I also commented on Miss Mole’s post, but yeah the holidays are starting to wear me down. Christmas is probably the worst since we spend Christmas Eve/morning with my parents then drive the 3-4 hours to his parents on Christmas Day to open gifts and have dinner with them. It’s so exhausting.

We’re going to start hosting some of the holidays at our place in the future since we’re the only ones traveling right now. It’s someone else’s turn to travel for once!!

I often did Friendsgivings in college and grad school; they are so much fun! Eventually, we’d like to host a holiday at our place, but I think that might be more logistically difficult for our family to come here than for us to go there.
