Save the Date!

November 28th, 2011 @ 9:49 am by Miss Unicycle

After our engagement-session pics were in, Mr. Unicycle and I set about the arduous task of choosing a pic to use for our save the dates. I briefly mentioned here that we wanted to make save-the-date postcards and have them printed FO’ FREE from Vistaprint. It wasn’t that hard to decide on a pic because most of them were definite nos. Firstly, we hardly even got any with the banner. If Jenn hadn’t kept reminding me to pull it out, we probably wouldn’t have had any. Second of all, it was hard to read the banner in most of the pics because the wind was so strong or we were too far from the camera.

Exhibit A: We look like awkward doofuses, and you can’t read the date.

Still doofuses, still can’t read it.

Almost a good one, but the “12″ was still billowing in the breeze. Also, my fabulous shoes are nowhere in sight!

For once we don’t look like doofuses, but our sign does.

When we finally settled on a pic, I turned to my artist bridesmaid to design them. We’ll call her BM Artist for lack of a better name. She did a fabulous job and even redid the design when I was a Bridezeella and sent it back for edits.

Personal pic

Here’s us dressed as Pee Wee and Miss Yvonne.

It didn’t need much designing, per se. I just wanted the front to be the picture we chose with “Save the Date” written in a cool font, and on the back I gave her a list of things to include and let her do her thang. Here’s what she came up with:

Save the Date! : wedding chicago diy photography save the dates stationery Postcar01 postcar01

Amazing, right? They look better without the cheap editing job I did, obviously. They also look better with a stamp and an address on them:

And here’s what it looked like after it arrived in the mail:

Boo, their stamp went over my lovely design!

So what did I learn from this wedding project?

  1. Addressing large quantities of letters is hard, even when you do it by hand and address them informally. I am so not looking forward to the invitations.
  2. BM Artist is amazing and selfless and I owe her one for making these look so adorable.
  3. It was nice to delegate something to someone else for a change!
  4. I love Pistilli Roman.

What do you think of our save the dates? Would you ever send hand-addressed postcards for something wedding related, or am I nuts?

Cute design! Our RSVP cards for our Milwaukee party are postcards, so we will see how they survive the mail!

Sooo cute! We did postcards too, but I didn’t hand-address them. Here is a link to our design. We went through weddingpaperdivas.com and I loooove them!

No you are not nuts. There I have hand addressed for friend’s weddings becuase surely they were not doing them all by them selves (be careful when you say let me know if there is anything I can do to help and when you say it mean it). I wasn’t planning on hand address my own but now it seems like it would be fun to put my friends through the same tasks.

Very cute! I am also going the postcard route. question regarding the postcard after you got it back in the mail.

On the front. Did you lose any detail at the bottom? Were your shoes obscurred by a sticker or other postmark of any kind? Just curious for my own layout purposes.

Oh my gosh, you two are cute as buttons! Cute, little buttons in the shape of kittens.

I’m in my busy season at work and couldn’t possibly hand address our Save the Dates. I sent them out. I better post about them soon, huh?

How did you get to print your own design from vistaprint for free? (Trying to get my own save the dates out for cheap!)

Love, love, love your final card!
I ALWAYS recommend hand-addressing Save the Date cards, whether in your own handwriting or a calligraphers. The personal touch is so important for all of your wedding stationery. Getting a group of friends together for an addressing party makes it a much easier task, and fun too!

I used the vistaprint postcards and also hand addressed them, and AND the post office marked right through our website…something I definitely didn’t consider.

What a great design, I love yellow in weddings so gorgeous! Also, if you can, print the addresses, so much easier on the hands!

Adorable!! I like how the banner date stands out as a slightly darker gray.. was that an edit from the original banner? Looks great, regardless! I started to handwrite addy’s for our STD’s, then slapped sticky labels over top of them after I addressed about half. Why? Well, 1. My hand was hurting, and 2. Apparently I write in chicken scratch after about 10 envelopes. Definitely enlisting a printer or more labels for the invite addresses!

They are adorable! I love them! You have the same wedding date as my parents and they will celebrate 39 years In 2012! Let’s hope it’s a lucky date! 0623 was our passwords for everything growing up..garage door, voicemail, etc..haha I’ll never forget it.

I addressed all my STDs and invitations by hand, and for the invites, so I could get it to look like I’d had it done by a calligrapher, I printed everything out in the lightest available shade of gray and traced. IT TOOK HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS. BUUUUTTT…in the end they were gorgeous and I felt very proud to have done it all myself AND had it come out so beautifully. So just make sure to set aside LOTS of time for addressing if you’re doing the invites all yourself. :)
