Miss Fox, Washington DC/Havre de Grace, MD Age and Occupation: 26, Massage Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Field Support Engineer Engagement Date: April 18, 2010 Wedding Date: June 2012 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m a dancer turned massage therapist who was born and raised in New York. Alas, true love has brought me “south” where I still maintain my penchants for pretty shoes, wine, crossword puzzles, cherry blossoms, and the Mets. I own more sunglasses than a normal person should and don’t eat red meat (though I make up for it by eating my weight in sushi). I tend to be a big planner who likes to get things started early, but generally end up being indecisive and procrastinating when it comes down to it. I have a (not so) secret crush on Chris Carrabba, but my loyalty and love ultimately goes to the future hubs, of course! Together, my Foxy man and I love to discuss (read: debate) politics and current events, have Mario Kart and Scrabble duels, and just laugh. A lot. We’re hoping and planning for a laid back, fun, summery, rustic vibe to our June wedding that will be genuinely “us” – that is, if we finally make some decisions. Huzzah!
About Miss Fox

A Ring Without the Bling. For Now.

November 29th, 2011 @ 11:35 am by Miss Fox

Remember when I said that we got started on the wedding band process? And that I should have my engagement ring back by early November?

Well. Helloooo late November/early December. Nice to see you. And not my ring.

Here’s the ish: way back in October, Foxy and I headed to Jared’s (yep, he we went to Jared’s) to discuss options for our wedding bands. His was incredibly easy - I think we debated over a few different choices for five minutes, then decided. Wham bam think you ma’am. Done.

Then we explored choices for my ring; I explained my vision (the crisscross band) to our consultant, Luka (coolest name ever, IMO). She had a perfect idea of what I was imagining, and just happened to be the main custom ring designer at the store. We talked, pulled similar ring examples, drew pictures.

Once we came to a “finished product” on paper, Luka explained that they needed to keep my ring so they could make a wax impression of it, and then a wax impression of my soon-to-be wedding band. I was told I would get a call when the band mock-up was ready, and that I could take my e-ring home at that point. However, a month later, there was still no phone call. I finally call in myself and was told that the wax imprint was indeed ready to be ok’ed and my e-ring was ready to be picked up. Foxy and I headed up to Jared’s as soon as we could. The bummer is that this is what we saw:

So sorry for the blur!

That? Is not anything like I asked for. I’m really not sure where that little “V” notch came from, as it’s nothing like I described or what Luka drew (seen in first two photos)—nor does it sit flush (or even remotely nicely) against me e-ring. I relayed these sentiments and was told that they would make a new wax mock-up of the (hopefully correct) band, but they would need to keep the e-ring a while longer so they could get another imprint of it. Ugh. OK fine. The bright side to all of this was that I was told they were putting it on a rush order since it didn’t come out right the first time, and it should only be about 2 weeks.

Four weeks later, still no call. I call back in, and they say it’s ready…again (and they didn’t call me becaaause…?). I trot on up, extremely excited to see the new mock-up and to finally, finally get my e-ring back. I’ve definitely grown some separation anxiety.

Here’s where the good news/bad news comes in. Good news: I like the band mock-up!

A Ring Without the Bling. For Now. : wedding havre de grace rings Photo 6 photo-6

Now I know the wax is a bit thick, but apparently it loses about 30% of that thickness when it’s actually made out of metal. It sits against the ring perfectly, and I’m super excited to see how it will eventually look against my e-ring. I tried to rest both rings on my finger to see the effect and promptly got yelled at (apparently the wax is fragile), so all I could get was the ring on a metal rod. No biggie. So far, so good!

The bad news: I still couldn’t take home my e-ring. Since I ok’ed the band and told them to make it, they still need to keep the e-ring another 4-8 weeks to make sure they get a perfect fit with the band. I was given an optimal date of 2 weeks for it to possibly be ready for me to take home, but given my recent experience? I will likely not have it back until after the new year. I understand why, but I’m still bummed. Oh, and the reason I never got calls about the wax being ready was because they switched two numbers in my phone number around. Super awesome. (Get on it, Jared’s.)

So, all in all, I’m still waiting and my patience is waning. I’m excited to see the final product of the band, but I’m so, so antsy to get my precious (my preeeecious) back!

Did you get a custom wedding band done? Did they have to take your e-ring away for a long time to do so?

My band is custom. My jeweler had it for three weeks. I’m sorry stupid Jared’s is keeping it for so long!

Is it at the Jared’s in Short Pump? Are they doing the work in house or sending it out? Want me to picket the place with you? ;)

When I ordered my wedding band (that actually matched my e-ring) they said to get a really flush fit between them they would have to take my ring for a few weeks. Needless to say, I vetoed that. Since they are actually a set, they assured me the should fit without sending it. I don’t know what I would do if I were you! I’d be going crazy!

What the heck? Why do they need the ring THAT long? That would piss me off. Why can’t you just bring it in after they make the wedding band to check that it’s flush? Is someone legit sitting there with the e-ring during the whole manufacturing process? At least when it’s all completed you’ll have EXACTLY what you want though. And, then you’ll have your whole life to wear them. :)

Wow. It didn’t take nearly that long for mine. We had it done at the local jewelry shop where he bought the engagement ring. They had my ring for about a week to make a wax impression of it. That was it. They didn’t keep it to make sure the band fit correctly. I thought that was why they made the wax impression. I tried on the wax of the band with my ring, and then, of course, the final band with my ring. I was only without my ring for a week - I’d be pretty angry to have been without out it for as long as you have had to.

My band is not as intricate as yours, but it did have to be shaped correctly (both horizontally and vertically), so there was quite a bit involved to make sure that they fit together.

UGH! I had a similar experience at diamonds direct with my engagement ring. When we picked it out I liked the bottom antique style band of one ring and the top round diamond with a cushion halo from another. The sample ring had a round halo on a round diamond. They told us 6-8 weeks since they were making it from scratch, NBD since we were not officially engaged, and I though it would give FH time to plan and let me forget it was coming (not).

Fast forward 8 weeks and we hear nothing, he calls the store and they say of course it’s ready it’s sitting in the safe! Our salesperson was out sick, so that’s why no one called?!?

Fast forward 1 week and some excess metal starts flaking off from where it was not cut all the way the thru the die in the scroll work. And the halo is not tight around the diamond. And the shoulders are really tall. And I start getting mad that we waited 8 weeks for less than perfect.

So I take it back and they have to REMAKE it, again, 4-6 more weeks. Thankfully they gave me the sample ring to wear in the mean while (not in my size and had to wear with a guard). They also offered to re set my diamond in a solitaire while we waited but then could not guarantee that the halo would be perfectly fit.

I feel your pain and sorry for the long post! Thankfully the designer makes two bands that match the band on my e-ring so ordering that should be easy! Fingers crossed.

Geez I would be having serious separation anxiety if they kept my ring for that long! One morning I left it on the kitchen counter and called my FI and told him to bring it to me on his way to work LOL!

We haven’t started shopping for bands yet, so I don’t know what the process will be like for us… but I hope you get yours in soon!

I had problems with Jared, too. They gave my fiance my engagment ring crooked. I took it back once, they said I was seeing things. I took it back a second time and they straightened it. Sort of. It’s still crooked. And I’m going to take it back again as soon as I get the chance.

Mine was not custom, but I had my wedding band and my e-ring soldered together (after the wedding)… it was gone for 3 weeks, and when it came back, it was not done properly… it had to be sent back and took another 2 weeks to receive it. How can you brag about being married when you don’t have the bling to show off?!? I bought a $10 fake ring to wear in the mean time.. but it turned my finger green everyday!! ha ha!!

@Miss Mink: It’s actually at the Jared’s near the Arundel Mills mall in MD.. I’ll still picket. They’re seriously bugging me, at this point!
@Miss Hawk: I thought about just telling them “no”, but they got me all paranoid that I really should leave it with them. Doubly paranoid since they didn’t get the design right the first time!
@Miss Porcupine: I know, I know, but I want it nowwwww. (So mature, yes?)
@kmclevel: Oh my gosh, you poor thing. I would have been LIVID at that point. I’m just curious, do these people really think that girls are just totally cool with no ring for weeks (months) on end? I would loooove to know what they’re actually doing with it right now.

@TinyTina: That’s why this is so hard - I get mini panic attacks when I don’t have mine on!! I forgot it one time (took it off to shower/wash hair) and we left for a friend’s house who lives an hour away. I somehow didn’t notice until halfway there, and a very large part of me wanted to turn around and go get it. I felt naked all night!
@mdove07: Oh boy, that’s not helping my impression of them. Up until this point, I had been uber impressed by them, but now? Not so much. I hope you can get your ring fixed!
@Ashley1001: That’s how my original replacement e-ring was.. I had a nice, green band stuck on my finger for days!

We had a custom band made at a local jeweler where DH got the ering, and they kept my ring FOREVER. They said it would take 2 weeks, and after 3 weeks I called them and their response was “we say 2 weeks, but our designer tries to keep the ring as long as possible to get a good match.” So basically if I wouldn’t have called they would have kept it even longer. And it still took another week after that for them to get it to me.

So you’re having to go through this, but I promise it’s all worth it in the end!

So cool. I didn’t know Jared’s did custom pieces. Your wedding band is beautiful!

I can’t believe they need your engagement ring that long! I hope they get it done quicker than they said; I would have separation anxiety too!

I know! They are so nonchalant about it too! “It will just be another 4-6 weeks. It won’t take as long this time.”
Just go ahead and take it for the most important 4 weeks people, when everyone wants to see your ring, and you show them the sample while secretly embarrassed that it is NOT the one you were waiting 2 months for but no one knows but you two.

Aw, it sounds so time consuming to get a band custom made! I’m glad I didn’t have to give up my e-ring in the search process! I’m not really wanting to solder my bands together for this reason too!
