Rehearse Eating Dinner? Yes!

November 30th, 2011 @ 3:01 pm by Miss Warbler

One of the things I’m looking forward to most with this wedding, besides actually getting married, is all of the eating activities. There are all types of excuses to scarf down food. Besides the dinner at your reception, you can fill up on good food pretty much from throughout the entire wedding planning process. Engagement dinners, multiple bridal showers, bridal luncheons and of course, the rehearsal dinner. Ah, the rehearsal dinner. I don’t know why most people only have one; I think I’ll need a few rehearsals to perfect my yummy face.

Early on, we considered having it at a great Mexican restaurant a few blocks from Mr. Warbs’ parents house. Since they’re regulars, the owners gave them a really good deal that included pitchers of margaritas, beer and platters upon platters of food. My kind of party! But, it wouldn’t have worked out logistically. The Mexican restaurant is in Whittier which is nearly 60 miles away from Malibu. So our options were to have the rehearsal dinner Thursday, have the actual rehearsal on Friday and the wedding on Saturday. There was way too much back and forth involved in that plan. We could also have had the dinner a couple of weeks before the wedding, but that just seemed odd to me. It just made more sense to have the dinner in the Malibu area. No enchiladas for us.

We checked out a few over priced restaurants before we settled on Buca di Beppo.

They serve family-style Italian food. For those not familiar with Buca, their food portions look like this:

Yum. Get in my mouth!

Those are huge plates! Although you can get individual plates, most of the food is made for sharing. I’m a big fan of family style dining, because it’s bound to get everyone talking which is sometimes a problem at these events. “Hey, hand me that plate of chicken parm over there!” “Aunt Sally, stop hogging all of the lasagna!” Or something a little more friendly.

We figured that with the huge portion and our small bridal party, we could really get the most for our money. And our stomachs. Remember, we’re big eaters. We’ve dined at the restaurant enough times to try a fair amount of the delicious menu. In my opinion, it’s one of the better chain Italian restaurants. I love the stuffed shells and baked rigatoni. And pretty much everything on the menu. Yum.

After perusing their website, we found that they regularly accommodate large parties of 20 or more. They host all kinds of wedding events, even bachelorette parties. It was pretty easy to make the reservation with their catering manager, who advised us to select the menu beforehand to cut down on costs. She also gave me an idea of how many servings a dish yielded so we could determine how much food we needed. For example, a large order of garlic bread serves 16 people. Super helpful! The best part is that the restaurant is only ten minutes away from the hotel, so we don’t have to worry about too much driving. We’re pretty confident that it’s going to be a hit!

What kind of rehearsal dinner are you having? Formal or casual?

Great choice! I love that restaurant. We ended up just having pizza and in n out at my parents house for the rehearsal dinner. It was fun and very kicked back. Only down side was people ended up hanging out in different rooms and not everyone mingled.

Looks delicious! It’s great that they have so much experience catering to groups to cut down on some of the how-much-to-order indecision.

I thought about going this route (probably at the same Buca you are having your RD at too, coincidentally) however, I was worried about the food being too heavy which would = me not feeling comfortable in my dress. Did you think about that? Or does heavy food not bloat you like it does me -.-
Cause I am having SERIOUS difficulty on where to have our RD…

We are def going casual. There is an America Legion close to our church and their cook is amazing! Fried chicken and polish sausage - oh yeah!

We’re doing pretty casual and small at (in my opinion) the best Italian place in town. I kind of love the ravioli pomodoro. Drool.

@Mrs. Ticket: Pizza and In N Out? Damn, that sounds like a good time!
@MsNarwhal: Are you getting married around Malibu too? I agree, Italian food is pretty heavy. But since my dress isn’t form fitting I’m not worried. If you’re worried about feeling comfortable in your dress, maybe you could have a rehearsal lunch instead of a dinner? The food will be much lighter and a hell of a lot cheaper!
@penguin_girl_0413: Thanks! Mr. Warbs and I used to go all the time when we first moved in together. Like once every couple of weeks. So bad, but damn those carbs were worth it!
@Miss Sunhat: Mmmm sounds good!

Yum. Get in my mouth!

AHAHAHAHA this made me laugh!!! Great choice though, they have AWESOME food.

I told my mother that I won’t be doing introductions/walking around to all the tables and saying hi at the reception until after I eat. Our caterer is well known in the area for awesome, unique food, and I refuse to not sit down and LOVE every bite!!!

Oh man both of your ideas sound amazing. I am fighting for mexican for our RD but FI doesn’t want to because his family aren’t huge fans of mexican…Say What?!?!… I could eat Mexican every day of my life & be ok with it. FI wants to do a more formal RD but I hate that idea b/c I feel like it’s bascially the same food we’re having at our wedding the following evening. Italian sounds great though- I’ll have to see if there are any amazing italian resturants near our venue.

Yum. I love Buca di Beppo. We considered going the formal route, but as the time nears for a decicion on this, I’m leaning more towards the casual, fun dinner.

Sounds like a great choice! We love Buca! I grew up in Whittier - do you mind if I ask which Mexican restaurant? :)

We’re going pretty casual- doing it at a tiny winery out in the country. My dad (with help) is doing the cooking. Lots of wine and beer…and a big bonfire!

I LOVE BUCA!!! Good choice! My MIL wanted to host ours so we ended up getting Famous Dave’s barbeque and just hung out. She even made a fire pit and there were smores had. Of course I was too nervous to eat a damn thing, but everyone else seemed to enjoy the casual atmosphere and food!

@Future Army Wife: That sounds delicious!
@soyjoy222: I heard that girl! So many brides forget to eat. Pssh, not me!
@alicia1745: That’s a good point, it might be like a repeat of reception food. Maybe Italian would be a good compromise for you two.
@Miss Hawk: I think that’s why planning the rehearsal dinner is halfway down on all of the wedding checklists. By that point, you just want something fun!
@moonlightbeloved: I think the name is Jiminez Mexican Food. It’s on Whittier and Broadway. Kind of a hole in the wall, but they have really good food!
@MaggieL: That sounds really intimate. I love bonfires!
@kmnowlan: Mmm BBQ and smores! I think I’ll probably be nervous too. Pre wedding jitters :)
