My wiener dog with an attitude problem and lazy basset hound are my constant source of entertainment. He's a hunter and I like cooking so it's not rare to see wild game on our dinner menu. Both of us were born and raised in a small historic farming town where our feet are still firmly planted. We have been together for nearly a decade and have shared many life experiences together, including birthdays that are only one day apart. Buck and Doe Register: Final Thoughts

November 30th, 2011 @ 11:53 am by Miss Doe

Since we registered nearly a week and a half ago, Bed Bath and Beyond has done a wonderful job keeping up on things. They noticed we added a few things online and deleted a few items, and a representative took the time to call us and ask if we had any questions. I also came home the other day to a nice handwritten thank you card in the mail from them. Although Bed Bath and Beyond was overwhelming, it was completely worth it. Being that they have SO much stuff, we were able to eliminate other places we were considering registering at. I know a lot of people register online and not in store, but I have to say that I am glad we stuck to registering in store. We were able to look at the quality of different items and see what they look like in person. There are items that we added to our registry that if I had only registered online I probably wouldn’t have chosen.

I really enjoyed our relaxed experience at Crate and Barrel. While we were moseying around, we struck up a conversation with a woman and her husband who were there buying a wedding gift for someone else. They have been married for nearly 30 years and they had some great advice for us.

They asked us what type of things we were registering for. I told her, but did mention we were having a hard time choosing bedding and blankets.

They both just lightly chuckled with a great big smile and followed that up with, “don’t worry about it.” They made a good point by saying that blankets and bedding will wear out over the years and will need to be replaced.

Register for nice dining pieces, toasting flutes, and that sort of thing because they will last forever. They told us that they still pull out their toasting flutes every year, and it always reminds them of their wedding.

Now, I am still convinced we don’t need nice china. However, we did register for nice dinnerware and a beautiful set of toasting flutes. After their kind words and wisdom, I said we should forget about bedding. To be honest, I end up changing up my bed yearly anyhow. From there on out we tried to add items to our registry that we know we will get a lot of use out of.

Might I add that it is important to create your registry your way? They kept giving us these crazy lists of all the things we need to register for. I am sorry, but I don’t need candlesticks, crystal frames, or eight sets of pillows. We really tried to keep things realistic for us, and do what we know is best for our home.

Now our registry is complete and that is one more thing I can cross of the to-do list. Yes, it took quite a bit of brain power and thought process to register, but please do not get me wrong. It. Was. FUN!

When we were finished, I asked Mr. Buck what one thing he wants most off the registry. Out of all of the beautiful things we registered for, the one thing he wants the most is a $6 garlic peel. Looks like someone might be getting one in his stocking from Santa. (See? It’s great to register before Christmas.)

What are your thoughts or concerns about registering? Have you gotten any good registry advice from married couples? Please share!

My advice to folks is don’t register for picture frames even if you want them. We didn’t register for them at all and still got 6 of them! Six!

We also agreed that we would both register for one ‘my partner thinks this is silly gift’ with no judgment. I really wanted the cute cow coffee creamer-he wanted the camping stools from REI.

I would agree with registering in store; hands down. Another piece of advice is to make a list beforehand of just general things you really need. I found it is super easy to walk into a store and end up making registering more of a game, then an actual time to pick things you want in your home.

You know what’s sad- we OBSESSED over picking out our bedding, and now that you mention the wearing out I’m like derf, who cares? I’m sure we’ll have a bijillion different bedsets over the years. We skipped out on the candesticks, redic expensive crystal vases, and super expensive China. It’ll just sit around collecting dust and never get used.

we registered at Crate & Barrel and Target. I enjoyed Crate & Barrel and hated Target. Especially registering in the store, it was just such a cluster.

It didn’t help that my FI has a hard time putting anything on the list over $50… he didn’t want to be greedy.

Honestly, I would rather not register. I would prefer our friends and family to get us something that reminds them of us as a couple or that they think we would enjoy. But, people expect a registry and get uncomfortable when you don’t have one… so there you go.

We totally skipped registering for any bedding because if this exact reason! Plus it gives me something to pick out when Mr. P is not around :)

We skipped the fine china as well. I imagine that we will only host “formal” events over the winter holidays, and my mother has gifted me a complete set of Christmas dinner and servingware. That’s enough for us!

When registering, we made sure to register for a variety of things in a variety of price points. I know that I hate buying off the registry if I only have to choose from a 300 dollar vacuum or a couple of boring spatulas.

I started all of our registries online out of sheer excitement, haha. I suppose we need to finish them because we have a wedding shower in less than a month…

I love that you met that couple and their advice was sweet and cute! We didn’t do china because I already have a set from my grandmother. We didn’t do bedding either but registered for about 14 new pillows! We tried to have a good spread of price choices and threw in some fun things like an old fashioned popcorn maker - which we got! I noticed the fun, gadget type items were bought for us first. People like to buy the more “fun” gifts rather than what they may think is boring sheets!

I actually went home to my beau after reading this and told him that we should go buy the down comforter and duvet we keep talking about getting. I was being stubborn and saying “NO, I will not let you take this off of my potential wedding registry” lol….good point that it will wear out and I’ll need a new one! We’re getting one after Christmas =)
