OK, hive, it’s time to get real. I don’t often write serious things because they’re boring, but I figured I should get this off my chest: being a bride makes me feel damn ugly. (If you’re tired of hearing girls complain about their looks, you should probably click away now.)

Hot chicks complaining about their looks is the worst thing ever.
Every wedding plan I make somehow reminds me of my looks. There are the obvious things, like dress shopping, looking for photographers (and thus thinking about how I’ll actually look in the photos), and booking a makeup pro. But other things are worrying me too. Like am I gonna look fat in our wedding video when I’m doing my sweaty rendition of the “Cha Cha Slide“? Will I have a hunchback while we say our vows and everyone’s looking at me from the side? Is the next vendor I meet with going to think I look like I belong in the eighth grade instead of in a wedding dress? Are my teeth too yellow? Is my skin too pale? Are my arms too fat? Are my feet too big? Are my nails too small? (Answer: yes. I have perfectly circular nails. It’s strange, and every time I’ve ever gotten a manicure, the manicurist has taken one look at my nails and literally said, “Oh my!”)

And that is especially true when it comes to hair! Girls with curly hair only wish they could straighten it out, and girls with straight hair want beautiful ringlets. For me, all I have ever wanted is thick locks. Through the years, I’ve noticed a definite thinning of my hair. Here you can see my dinky pony tail (and yes I am petting an elephant!!).
The problem is, for my wedding day I have dreams of hair like this:

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
Nope, I’m not going anywhere. You can’t get rid of me that easily! What I’m referring to, of course, is our exit from the reception or, as our fabulous venue calls it, our “gala send off.” How fancy is that? It brings something like this to my mind:

I am definitely on board with anything that makes me feel like a princess (technically duchess, I suppose, but I’m sticking with princess), so a gala send-off it is!
We have a choice of using bubbles, rose petals, or sparklers. For those of you who are as impatient as I am, I won’t drag this out (because obviously wondering what item we are using at our send off would keep you up all night). For us, the choice was clear:

Dear Mr. Jack Johnson,
Mr. Buck and I have grown up together listening to your music. It is one of the few music choices that we actually have in common. One of our favorite songs is of course, Better Together. The lyrics are absolutely perfect. You were able to write a beautiful love song while steering clear of being overly mushy. I thank you for that.
Better Together would be perfect for our first dance song. The issue that I am having is that it is much too fast. Either we awkwardly and quickly sway to this song, or we need to have some type of choreographed stint going on. Either way, it is not ideal for us. I have tried searching for different versions that you may have recorded, but this search has proved to be unsuccessful.
I think there is probably others out there who are in the same boat I am in.

Oh boy, y’all. I really messed up this time! A few weeks back Mr. Hawk and I had a busy wedding-filled weekend planned. I went bridesmaids’-dress shopping that Saturday and had a tasting scheduled for Sunday with our caterer and a flower consultation afterward…or so I thought…
Mr. Hawk and I got up and went to church. From there we left straight for Williamsburg. An hour drive down the road and we were there. Being short on time, I suggested that we eat the sandwiches we grabbed while walking to our next destination. (No time to sit and relax!) When we arrived at the open house, the building seemed pretty dead. Since it was extraordinarily quiet, Mr. Hawk suggested I double check my email invite. I had been reading the invite details on the car ride, so it was still open on my phone. We were at the right location, right time…but wrong date. (UUUHG!!) The tasting was actually scheduled for the NEXT weekend.

Lamp Shade Centerpieces by OurWedding

My mom loves shopping, but she loves shopping for me and not for herself. Every once in awhile she’ll find a cute top or a new pair of PJs, but that’s usually for every ten things she finds that is intended for me. When it came to what she would wear for the wedding, as expected, she was pretty casual about her expectations. Until one day I sensed in her voice that she was slightly worried, and then she told me that she had my aunt searching the Internet for her because she “just couldn’t find anything.” My aunt sent her links to some Nordstrom dresses, I search David’s Bridal, but nothing was standing out. I decided that Internet shopping was not going to work.
Knowing how much my mom dislikes trying on clothes and spending money on said clothes, I knew it was going to have to be a sneak-attack.

A few posts back, I showed you the candy-buffet inspiration photos I’d been squirreling away. So what will my candy buffet look like? Well, the table will be covered with gray and white polka dot fabric (the same fabric as my engagement-pics dress, which I’ll show you later), and I’ll fill mismatched jars/vases/glass containers with bulk yellow candy—yellow gumballs, M&Ms, rock candy, and maybe my favorites, Mr. Goodbar!

After we finished our first dance as husband and wife, it was time to welcome everyone to the dance floor and drop it like it’s hot. Yeah, I just said that.
Mouth open - unfortunately this is a pretty classic move of mine. Yes, it’s very bridal.
As much as I’m sure you’d love for me to walk you through each song that was played and the subsequent dance moves that followed…I’m thinking I’ll just share a few photos of the dance floor heating up.

No, not Miss Warbler, but these Warblers from Glee:
AHHH, I love them!
Why, you may ask, am I talking about the Warblers? Well, as I’ve told you before, Mr. Elk and I met in college during our freshman orientation. During those four years, we had more fun than I can tell you! God I miss college, especially now in medical school. What I wouldn’t give to go back to those lazy days hanging out by the Japanese cherry blossoms…but I digress.
Although I am in the thick of wedding planning, I have to admit that most of my recent daydreams have involved buying a house. I read the Weddingbee boards in the home tag; I browse through listings in our zip code on Trulia; I keep a sharp eye out for Sunday open houses in our neighborhood.
I have been a renter all of my adult life, thanks to the high cost of real estate in cities like Chicago and Los Angeles. I have to say that we found a pretty awesome rental place here in LA. Our apartment is about 1,100 square feet without any shared walls. We have our own parking, laundry room, and workshop/storage area downstairs. Most importantly, we have our own fully fenced backyard. This feature was especially important to us. Since we are living in California, we wanted to enjoy barbecuing and sunning outside. Also, we have discovered that our dog loves hanging out in a yard as well.
Here is a pretty sweet life.
Due to the nature of the real estate market, we are most likely going to remain renters for another few years. Mr. Mole bought a condo in Chicago a couple of years before we met, and the time just isn’t right to sell it. And, of course, it would be hard for us to come up with a 20% down payment until that property is sold. So we just have to wait.
