After taking our formal portraits, it was time for the fun ones. We headed out to the church gardens first.
I’m sure you can relate. There are just some days when I move a little slower and am feeling a little less “sunny.” Well, the other day was one of those days. Mr. Hawk was leaving to go out of town for work and I was feeling down in the dumps. The air had somehow turned cold, it was overcast and breezy, and the only things I could think about were my workload at the office, bootcamp at the park in the freezing cold, and having three super pent-up dogs that I’d have to deal with after everything else. Top it off with following up on some wedding emails? I was feeling like I’d be lucky to fall into bed before PM turned to AM again.
I ran off to work, barely having a moment to kiss Mr. Hawk goodbye before heading out to complete my multitude of tasks. I went about my day just hoping to get through. When I popped home to throw on my workout gear, I was still in blinders mode, looking for the light at the end of the tunnel. That’s when I happened across a sweet little note attached to my mirror. A huge smile immediately came across my face, but I didn’t have time to call Mr. Hawk before running out again for bootcamp.

When I made it back home for the second time, I was even more exhausted. I had my butt kicked in class and I was ready to make some dinner. I went to hang up my keys on our shelf and I came across another note. Heading to the kitchen to cook some dinner, I found still another note.

I thought this was a problem for us because many of our friends and acquaintances have not been around weddings much and therefore don’t know the rules. RULES! (Don’t you just feel like you’re going to get your knuckles smacked when something wedding related isn’t just right sometimes? ) More and more I see on the boards and blogs that this is an across-the board-problem.
As frustrating as the question can be, I guess I’m a little flattered that so many people either really like us or think our wedding is going to be a good enough time to want in on. I’m alright with both of those. But what do you say back when someone asks if they can come to your wedding? Sometimes I just want to smile awkwardly and then get angry with myself for not locating the nearest emergency exits when I entered the building.

No, I’m not talking about the vehicle through which Betty White revitalized her career. I’m talking about the event that turned Mr. Unicycle into my fian-SAY.
Here’s how that shiz went down. I drove up to Milwaukee—the land of beer, cheese, and the bronze Fonz—to visit my boyf one weekend, as I often do. We were planning on taking a mini trip up to Cedarburg—the land of wool, old people, and more wool—the next day.

As I was getting ready to go to sleep Friday night at around 11 PM (what can I say, I’m old—I’m practically a dad), the boyf announced that he’d be waking me up early in the morning.
“Exactly how early?” I questioned. I’m a details person and, let’s face it, the wool could wait. He told me 5 AM.

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
As a blogger, words are very important to me. I love a captivating speaker, getting lost in a good book is one of my favorite things, and I’m easily moved by beautiful song lyrics. Needless to say, I was really looking forward to the toasts at our wedding reception. Listening to my dad’s toast at our rehearsal dinner was such a wonderful moment; I just couldn’t wait to see what some of our favorite people had in store for our wedding!
My dad was up first.
This past weekend, Mr. Snow Cone and I finally finished our thank-yous and sent them off into the world. One day short of our three-month anniversary, we were finally done. Emily Post advises:
Each wedding gift should be acknowledged with a written note within three months of receipt of the gift. It’s best to write the notes as soon as possible after gifts arrive, however. Write a note even if you have thanked the giver in person.
According to Ms. Post, we were made in the shade, by 24 whole hours. Why, then, did we feel kind of like big ol’ failures? Why, when we were celebrating our recently-completed task, did a more recently married friend squash our happiness by pointing out that she had gotten her thank-yous into the mail sooner than we had, and her wedding had occurred long after ours?
After thinking on it for a bit, here’s the conclusion I’ve reached: people need to take a chill pill when it comes to thank-you notes.
Allow me to explain.

I’ve been pretty nonchalant about wedding flowers and bouquets throughout most of my planning. It’s really a direct result of not having a very big budget, so florals were placed under the importance of food, beer and music. And, my wedding dress.
I’m drawn to the more expensive bouquets consisting of succulents, and bigger blooms like peonies. If I couldn’t have what I wanted, then I just didn’t care that much. As snooty as that sounds, it was more that I just accepted that our flowers weren’t going to be my dream flowers. I was perfectly content going to the local grocer and buying whatever flowers were available and arranging our own bouquets the night before the wedding. Mama Honey and MOH Stac, however, weren’t having it. They envisioned more perfect flowers for our wedding day.
A long, long time ago I fell in love with this shoot featured on Style Me Pretty. I adored all the elements but what really caught my eye were the flowers; I had never seen them before. Suddenly I was enamored with anemones.

To be quite honest, Mr. Elk isn’t really big into fashion. With two pairs of jeans, one pair of sneakers, and ten button-down shirts in varying colors, it would be more accurate to say he doesn’t care about clothes at all, which will become all the more evident when you hear this story: When I first started dating Mr. Elk, I had an event to attend and wanted his advice on what to wear. I tried on two dresses: one was a long red dress with thick straps and a deep V neckline. It had ruching on the side and floral detailing. The other was a maroon strapless chiffon dress with a sweetheart neckline and natural waist that had an ombre effect. He looked at me in both dresses and asked, “What’s different about them? They are both red dresses.”

The name’s Ticket. MRS. Ticket.
I’m back!!! The wedding was amazing and wonderful, and I would be lying if I said it was perfect, because nothing in life is ever completely perfect. But it was certainly one of the best days of my life (the day Mr. Ticket proposed is still high on my list, as is just about every day of our honeymoon). Luckily I was pretty much the only one to notice the hiccups we did encounter and for the most part I managed to just go with the flow and let everything roll off my back.
The family drama llama managed to keep its cool (hallelujah!) and everything turned out even better than I had imagined. After dreaming everything up in my head for so long, I started to freak out the week before the wedding as to how it would all actually pan out. Well, there was no need for worry, between the team of expert vendors, AMAZING family members, and a truly spectacular bee (looking at you Mrs. Parasol), the wedding went off without a hitch and looked incredible.

Throughout the whole planning process, Mr. Hawk has been pretty darn laid back. (Thank God at least one of us is as cool as a cucumber!) Besides the occasional, “Do you really need that?” or “Um, I thought we were thinking of ways to save money?” he’s happily let me take the reins and be little miss type-A. But when it came to discussing the food, it was a bit of a different story. I am obviously madly in love Mr. Hawk, but sometimes his obsession with all things food (well, mainly pork) kills me.
When we started discussing menu ideas, we knew we didn’t necessarily want to go the traditional reception route of a steak dish, a chicken dish, and veggies. We threw some ideas around and landed on serving Southern-style comfort food. It fit our location and us as a couple. (Plus, who doesn’t enjoy gourmet mac and cheese?!) I was thinking Virginia ham, biscuits and corn bread, and some Southern-style veggies (all perhaps with a little elegant twist). Mr. Hawk heard Southern and thought “PULLED PORK!” I think a lot of men have an obsession with all things pork that us women may never understand, but this was ridiculous. (We weren’t discussing what to eat for your average Saturday night dinner here!) I just didn’t see having pulled pork sandwiches as being as elegant as I wanted for our evening reception. Apparently it was all Mr. Hawk could see. (Sigh.)

Portraits. Everyone’s favorite part of the wedding right? Not so much. But it’s nice to have pictures with family, as they’re kind of rare around these parts.
First up, half of my mom’s side.
Like other blogger bees who have had destination weddings, we are going to have a hometown celebration for the people who can’t make it to celebrate with us in Vegas. The first question to ask, though, was which “hometown” was it going to be in? Mr. Mole grew up in the Chicago suburbs, and I grew up in southeastern Wisconsin. We eventually decided on Milwaukee because it is an easy drive for our friends in Chicago, it is convenient for my relatives throughout Wisconsin, and it is close to my mom. Milwaukee was also our home together for the ten months before moving to Los Angeles!

So now that we had the general location, it was time to talk specifics. We are thinking of this event like a party, not necessarily like a second wedding reception. We aren’t going to be cutting a cake or dancing or throwing a bouquet or anything like that. We just want to gather all of our loved ones together for a fun celebration with fantastic food and drinks. Keeping this in mind, we quickly zeroed in on our favorite Milwaukee restaurants. In all, we contacted three of them.
Hello there! I feel like I should be juggling or something. It is so great to be here (oh, who am I kidding—bee here) as a blogger! I’ve been reading Weddingbee since early 2009 when I was a wee child (”When I grow up, I want to be a Weddingbee blogger!”), and now I’m finally here, sharing these pathetic secrets about myself. I must be the worst lurker in the site’s history, too, because I’ve only made a handful of comments in that time. I chose the Unicycle icon because it’s ridiculous, and so am I. Seriously, nothing is funnier than a bear riding a unicycle, unless said bear rolls over a banana peel in transit and falls down. Are you laughing yet? I can’t stop thinking of what Mr. Unicycle would look like attempting to balance on one wheel.

I couldn’t find a pic of him balancing precariously on anything, but here’s one of both of us anyway.
When Mr. U and I were deciding what character to be, I told him, “We have to be the Unicycles! It’s perfect!” and he said, “Is it at least an animal riding a unicycle?” I had to check and get back to him on that, and it was. It was clearly fate.
