Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!

Post-Wedding Feelings

November 10th, 2011 @ 10:05 am by Mrs. Magic

Let me tell you something.

Post-Wedding Feelings : wedding chapel hill emotional 392082 392082_

Being married is awesome. But post wedding emotions are so confusing!

Like Mrs. Panther wrote about recently, I am having a lot of post-wedding feelings. Like, a LOT. And they are all jumbled up and are making me feel really confused and emotional and disorganized and stressed and happy.

First off, I think, like many of you who posted on Mrs. Panther’s posts, I just feel a bit of a void where wedding planning was.

CONFESSION: I Am Impatient.

November 10th, 2011 @ 9:15 am by Miss Hawk

(Or Our Road to Engagement)

I can be very impatient. (And Mr. Hawk may think that is a gross understatement!) I mean, I S-U-C-K at waiting when it comes to something I really, really want. While my determination has served me well career-wise, it wasn’t exactly conducive to the whole engagement process.

When Mr. Hawk and I moved in together back in October of 2010, I wanted to make our intentions crystal clear. We decided that if we were going to cohabitate, it was a serious step in making a more permanent future together. I was incredibly happy and excited to be moving forward in our relationship until things didn’t follow the timeline I had somehow developed in my head along the way.

When I’m not studying or sleeping at the hospital, I spend my free time watching bad TV (Vampire Diaries anyone?), playing with my pooch, singing incredibly off-key (to the annoyance of Mr. Elk ), and reading Harry Potter for the zillionth time. Miss Mole's Picture
Miss Mole, Los Angeles/Las Vegas Age and Occupation: 29, Test Prep Instructor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, User Experience Architect Engagement Date: April 2011 Wedding Date: January 2012 Venue: Wynn Las Vegas/Bouchon Bistro About Me: I’m a Wisconsinite-turned-Angeleno who is planning a destination wedding in Las Vegas. I am passionate about education: I spent 23 (!) consecutive years in school, and now I work to help other people get into graduate programs. I love running on the treadmill, buying bath products from Lush, learning new moves in step aerobics, and exploring my neighborhood on foot. I am sometimes snobby about food, but I am rarely snobby about books. I read everything from Geoffrey Chaucer to Iris Murdoch to Chuck Klosterman to Candace Bushnell. My fiance and I are getting married on our third anniversary!
About Miss Mole

My wedding dress was discontinued shortly before I started my wedding-dress search. I was lucky enough to stumble upon a sample of this lovely gown at a bridal salon in Los Angeles. Furthermore, because the dress could no longer be ordered, the salon was selling the dress at a deep discount: 67% off. The only catch to this sweet price? I had to accept that particular dress on that particular day. I couldn’t get the dress in a different color. I couldn’t get it with a different hem length. And, most importantly, I couldn’t get it in a different size. It was going to be size 10 or bust (out of the seams).

The dress fit perfectly. Yet realizing this gave me serious pause: a size 10 is both a smaller size and a bigger size than I ever imagined being on my wedding day. Say what? Let me explain.

Growing up, I struggled with my weight. By struggled with my weight, I really mean that I struggled with being overweight. I was fairly active in sports, but I was always the heaviest one on the softball or swim team. I grew to be a junior size 9 before I even graduated into junior high. I bounced between a 10 and a 14 in high school. In college, I maintained a size 14–16. I lacked confidence, so I hid my body behind oversized cardigans and baggy sweatshirts. I also wore a lot of black, clinging to the idea that it was “slimming.” At my highest, I probably weighed 230 pounds.

Trying to blend into the background

So if anyone had told a younger version of me that someday I would walk down the aisle in a size 10 wedding gown, strapless no less, I would have been shocked.

Mrs. Sparkler, Chicago Age and Occupation: 27, Communications Aficionado Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Publisher Engagement Date: July 21, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Chicago Illuminating Company About Me: I’m a Southern lady living in the big city of Chicago. Well, lady may be a stretch, but I’m working hard to keep some Virginia charm in our sleek, urban, wedding-palooza! I’m addicted to marathons, not-so-famous bands, Chicago restaurants, and Mark Twain. I cry during SPCA commercials, and I think LOST was the best show to ever hit television. Mr. S and I met at a classy college mixer and, 7 years later, he’s still by my side. He’s the only child, laid back, free spirit... I’m the oldest of five kids, type-A, organizer. It doesn’t work on paper, but we’ve never paid attention to that stuff anyway. Somehow it works. And like they say, sometimes when you know…you just know.
About Mrs. Sparkler

I practically floated off the plane when we touched down in Oahu (because I was so excited, NOT because of my white wine/flying meds combo ;) ). I had fantasized about coming to Hawaii since I was a little girl and to finally be there, and feel the warm breeze and smell the clean air, was (literally) a dream come true.

Our first stop on the way to our resort was the rental car office. We’d taken the advice of friends who had visited Hawaii before us, and arranged to have a car for the week. And I’m SO glad we did! Having that a car made our island experience so much more laid back and awesome. Not having to rely on resort shuttles or cabs the whole week was definitely worth the price!

Sparkler Oahu Tip #1: Rent a car! And if you want a Jeep, reserve early!

We didn’t end up with the Jeep Wrangler we were hoping for because EVERYONE visiting Hawaii wants a Jeep Wrangler. So make sure you specifically ask for one and reserve it early if that’s your top pick. Sparks and I were perfectly happy with the car we ended up with though… hey, we were in Hawaii!!!

Mrs. Zebra, Providence, RI Age and Occupation: 24 Marketing/Costume Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26 Management/Firefighter Engagement Date: December 12, 2008 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: The Providence Biltmore About Me: I'm a small town New England girl with an affinity for procrastination, crossing the proverbial line, and putting her foot in her mouth. I'm a lover of history, all seasons, sewing and Incubus. I design costumes on the side for my old high school's theatre department, which is where I met my sexy man. Our motto for our Big Fat Lebanese/Portuguese/Irish near-300 person wedding is "the more the merrier"! We are marrying in a Catholic ceremony and are hammering out the details of our Victorian-inspired reception.
About Mrs. Zebra

The top floor of The Biltmore is dedicated to the ballroom and banquet space. Our guests were able to enjoy cocktail hour while listening to our fantastic DJ, Brendan Lafferty, tickle the ivories. The bride and groom are able to enjoy cocktail hour from a sort of additional floor/balcony above the banquet space. While enjoying the passed hors d’oeuvres, beer, and wine, our guests were able to mingle with old friends and relatives.

It was during this time that Sara Zarrella and her assistant Lauren were able to capture some beautiful images of the then undisturbed ball room. I so badly wanted to see the room prior to the guests but didn’t want to risk being stopped on the way. There would be plenty of time to reminisce later on. For a few glorious minutes at our wedding, Zeb and I were completely alone listening to the happy chatter and wonderful music of cocktail hour just below.

I tend to fall in love with everything I encounter, but more than anything, I love my two little kitties, Bela and Josie, and my big kitty, Mr. Panther! As a wannabe crafter, I'm still waiting for my artistic talents to emerge. (Any day now, really.) In the meantime, I spend my days eating anything put in front of me, buying every pair of shoes I see and absorbing wedding inspiration from every inch of my surroundings. Mr. Panther and I are hardcore New Englanders planning Connecticut nuptials from our new home in the Dirty South, and can't wait to mix our newfound love of classic Southern charm with some modern city touches.

Post-Wedding Prioritizing

November 10th, 2011 @ 5:46 am by Mrs. Panther

Planning a wedding is hard. Your degree of involvement in the planning process can determine just how hard, but no matter what, it’s difficult. There is one up-side, though: Prioritizing becomes a little simpler.

Post-Wedding Prioritizing : wedding atlanta emotional 11 11

When you’ve got a hard, set goal to work toward, and when society deems that goal The Biggest Day of Your Life, it’s easy to put it first. When I was planning my wedding, my priorities were simple: 1) Wedding planning stuff. 2) Exercising so that I would look decent on The Biggest Day of My Life. And 3) Work. I knew I was going to need my paycheck to cover the wedding expenses, after all.

Once Upon a Time…

November 9th, 2011 @ 2:40 pm by Miss Hawk

The mister’s and my relationship didn’t start off like the typical fairy tale. We met New Year’s Eve 2007 when a friend brought him along to our apartment. I was there with my then-boyfriend. We went out to the bar and I paid him no mind, but he apparently left quite an impression on one of my best friends. At some point in the night, they got into a heated discussion. She was quite annoyed with him. So when she later posted pictures from the night out, she cropped him out of the shot and even made some sassy comment like, “Yeah, I cropped that guy out.”  We later started hanging out in a group on the regular, and he called her out on the photo incident. Luckily he has a good sense of humor! Who would have known that “that guy she cropped” would one day become my future hubby?

Both of us were born and raised in a small historic farming town where our feet are still firmly planted. We have been together for nearly a decade and have shared many life experiences together, including birthdays that are only one day apart. Do You Feel Like A Bride?

November 9th, 2011 @ 1:41 pm by Miss Doe

This past weekend I did what any bride does on lazy days…get caught up on wedding shows, duh. You know the lineup: Say Yes To The Dress, Platinum Weddings, Four Weddings, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding…and my new personal favorite, Brides of Beverly Hills.

These shows vary far and wide in its content. However, I started to notice a common theme. I kept hearing the same phrase over and over in each show.

“It makes me feel like a bride.”

Whether they were trying on their dress, veil, shoes, picking out flowers, cake tasting. Everyone was doing something different when they would proclaim, it made them feel like a bride.

I can’t say I have had a moment like that yet.

Un Deux Trois…

November 9th, 2011 @ 1:07 pm by Miss Elk

Obviously, I am counting my table numbers…duh! I’ve gone through a lot of ideas about what to do to number our tables. My favorite idea has pretty much always been the ever popular frame-with-fabric-and-glued-on-wooden-number dealio.

Un Deux Trois... : wedding decor flowers long island Vintage030 Image via Elizabeth Ann Designs / Photo by Diana Lupu

Unfortunately, I was unable to find beautiful frames that didn’t cost an arm and leg, and so I decided to explore other options for table numbers. Then one day the fabulously famous Hobby Lobby opened near my house, and I decided to explore; and I had a moment of genius!

Alas, true love has brought me “south” where I still maintain my penchants for pretty shoes, wine, crossword puzzles, cherry blossoms, and the Mets. I own more sunglasses than a normal person should and don’t eat red meat (though I make up for it by eating my weight in sushi). I tend to be a big planner who likes to get things started early, but generally end up being indecisive and procrastinating when it comes down to it. I have a (not so) secret crush on Chris Carrabba, but my loyalty and love ultimately goes to the future hubs, of course! Together, my Foxy man and I love to discuss (read: debate) politics and current events, have Mario Kart and Scrabble duels, and just laugh. A lot. We’re hoping and planning for a laid back, fun, summery, rustic vibe to our June wedding that will be genuinely “us” – that is, if we finally make some decisions. Huzzah!
