Last weekend was a “to do” that was nothing but fun! My mother and I went cake tasting! Really it was cupcake tasting, but who cares—it was awesome!

We decided to go all out and pick four different flavors. Maybe it was because we wanted something for everyone, but more likely it was just too hard to pick only one or two. So, here they are!

One of the best things about this time in our lives is that more than likely, some of our friends are getting married, too. I had the pleasure of going to a friend’s wedding last weekend and had to struggle through the age old question of what to wear.
I love this for a fall or winter wedding:

This is perfect for a spring or garden wedding:
The field has been narrowed, and the Weddingbee community has the honor of helping to choose Minted’s newest wedding invitations to add to their fabulous line of stationery!
Minted holds regular design challenges for all their stationery categories, and the top community-voted designs receive top honor of being sold at Minted. Stationery designers, amateur and pro alike, win cash prizes and commissions on their designs. We love Minted’s constantly updated wedding invitation line, and we’re thrilled to help choose the next generation!
Narrowing down the field of 100 to a top 12 was difficult, and we suspect picking one out of these 12 will be even harder (We tried our best to narrow it to a top 10! Impossible!). Check out our favorites, and vote on your favorite below to see it carried in Minted’s wedding invitation shop:

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
Confession: LOTS has been going on in life lately outside of wedding planning.
Shocker, I know.
Work has been getting busier, I technically started a second job, I’ll (hopefully) start dancing with a local company in the next few weeks, and…minor detail…we moved!
The RSVPs are rolling in so I can finally share our finished invitations!
Bridesmaid K has designed and made invitations for several people over the last couple of years, so after my engagement, she showed me her designs in case I was interested in any of them. She knew I wanted to make my own and as luck would have it, one of her designs was perfect! She mocked up the main body of the invite in our colors and it helped confirm this was the route we wanted to go.
MOB ordered multiple paper samples from a company in Gary, IN. I wanted a cream color, but nothing too yellow, as well as a midnight navy paper for the background. We found exactly what we were hoping for and the navy even has a nice shimmer to it to give it a wintery feel.
Drum roll please…

I have a confession—I love weddings, and not just because I am planning my own. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for them. When I was younger and people asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always replied, “I want to be a doctor but a wedding-dress designer in my spare time.” Want proof? Here are some wedding dresses I designed back when I was 12 or so! (PS: Don’t judge too hard—I was 12 with no artistic talents, and I never claimed to be Vera Wang!)
God have my tastes in dresses changed! Velvet? At least the black was ahead of my time!
So… As I have learned already on this wedding journey, things do not always go as planned. You may remember that Mr. Aardvark had so awesomely offered to handle the hotel for our out of town guests. I thought it was all done and dusted.
We were going to set aside 30 rooms with the intention that we would add more if needed. Chances are they would be needed, because at our tally, we had between 50-60 roomfuls of people coming from far enough away to want a hotel room. However, not wanting to be on the hook for unsold rooms, we aimed low.
The hotel we were working with seemed ideal. The location was PERFECT, like walking from all of our venues perfect. The price per night was good. On top of all that, it was not a chain and it was one of the fancier hotels in Battle Creek! However, a few days after receiving our contract (but before the please-return-by-X-date-to-ensure-your-rooms date) I got a phone call from the event coordinator…

of 2011! Ha, have I taught you nothing? This is a process that never ends, it goes on and on my friends…
We’re about to remove the conditions on Mr. D’s provisional green card/permanent resident card. That’s right, we’re in a provisional marriage. Our learner’s permit of matrimony, if you will. Basically, to ensure that you’re not in a sham marriage (and I assume, to collect further revenue) after you receive the K-1 (fiance visa), then after you are married and complete the adjustment of status you receive a provisional green card—valid for 2 years from receiving the card. In our case this is January 2010, so when the government refers to anniversaries… they mean when you received your card—not your wedding anniversary.
You can apply for your 10 year card as soon as 90 days before your expiry date. For the past year or so, I’ve been having flashbacks to our engagement year. Moments such as, “oh, we should save a holiday card to send to the government,” or “don’t forget a picture of the two of us, we need evidence!” If you don’t submit the forms, evidence of your relationship and $590… you get deported. So obviously this needs to be completed.
It’s a stressful situation for so many reasons, but it’s also a strange position to find yourself in: trying to view your relationship as an outsider, making sure you look like a real couple, proving to someone you’ll never meet that you are a couple in a real marriage.

Warning: This might a bit of a rant, but I can’t help my annoyance!
Image via People/Photo by Clint Brewer/Splash News Online
By now everyone is quite aware that Kim Kardashian got divorced after 72 days of marriage. Most people are probably thinking something along the lines of: WHO CARES? I don’t know why I care, but I do. It pisses me off. Mostly it annoys the hell out of me because it brings to light a huge, gaping flaw in our society.
I find it incredibly annoying that celebrities can go have shotgun, ridiculously lavish, expensive weddings on a whim.

Our apartment is beginning to fill with items for our wedding. Now don’t worry; we aren’t at Hoarders level yet. I am in no danger of getting crushed by a falling stack of programs in the living room or swallowed by a sea of washi tape hidden behind the pantry door. However, there are favor cards in the desk. There are invitation samples on the bookshelf. There is a sparkly hair clip in the medicine cabinet. And there are three new shoe boxes in my closet. That’s right. I have purchased three pairs of shoes for one occasion.
(And I almost bought another pair today. PSA: Nordstrom Rack at the Howard Hughes Center in Los Angeles has two pairs of white satin Jimmy Choo pumps for $49.99. Size 38.5/8.5 and 41/11.)
The shoe hoard
Let’s open these babies up for a closer look.
I struggled a lot with this one, guys. Flowers, oh how I love them, oh how their price tags do not fit into my nicely divided budget no matter how I play with the percentages. (Thanks, Google Docs!)
After investigating a few florists in the area, I knew this was going to be a do-it-yourself kind of project. I’m going to order white roses in bulk from Costco online. I was able to find 100 stems for $80 including shipping. All the reviews say to have them delivered about two days before the event so you can get them into water and looking beautiful again.
On top of this steal, I might have found the best little-known invention. It’s called Easy Arranger and is sold by Annabelle Noel. For $12 I got a four pack of patterns, insurance I’ll call it, so that the bouquets look right. Want to know what else is awesome about these? They’re bendable, reusable, and coated so they won’t rust!
You just stick your flowers through the holes. It looks foolproof, right?
Sometime early on in the planning process, while I was casually browsing obsessively stalking wedding blogs, I came across a photographer that I totally fell for: Lotus Blossom Photography. I’m not sure why I was so drawn to their work, as there are lots (and lots, and lots) of talented photographers, many of whom seem to be swarming around Nashville, but this one jumped out at me. At the time we were not ready to book anyone, but a little seed was planted. That little seed looked a little something like this:

I have no explanation as to why but this particular photo stuck like glue (anyone else singing Sugarland right now?), but it undeniably did.
Months later, we actually were ready to book someone.
