About Mrs. Mole

Our Vegas Photographer

December 1st, 2011 @ 9:54 am by Mrs. Mole

In my last post, I talked about the search for a destination-wedding photographer in Las Vegas. After Googling things like “wedding photography + vegas” and checking out reviews, we ended up narrowing down our search to three photographers: Bentley & Wilson, The Cohens, and Brian Saculles Photography.

Bentley & Wilson is a photography group that consistently receives high reviews and awards on websites like The Knot and WeddingWire. They are a great budget pick, offering customizable packages for low prices. Their packages seem to start around $500. Bentley & Wilson also do Strip photo tours and trash-the-dress sessions.

We were looking for a more photojournalistic approach to our wedding photos, and we weren’t crazy about the editing of many of the photos. It just wasn’t our style. So we moved on.

The Cohens are a husband-wife photography team who photographed Mrs. Dumpling‘s wedding. Their packages begin at $2,000.

I really like these photographs. They do a great job of capturing significant moments with clear focus and strong colors. I emailed The Cohens for more information…and never heard back. I didn’t press the issue, though, because we found someone that we like even more.

As you can probably guess, we ended up booking Brian Saculles Photography to cover our wedding. We met with them in Vegas last weekend, and that meeting really confirmed our confidence in our choice. Both Brian and his wife, Lyn, are incredibly warm people with whom we feel very comfortable. Plus, Brian has a great eye. We like how sharp and focused his shots are. His photo packages, like The Cohens’, start around $2,000.

When we met with Brian and Lyn, they asked that we come up with a short list of shots that we would like to have of our wedding. So that’s what I am going to be working on over the next few weeks. What are/were your “must have” wedding shots for your wedding?

A local photographer is super important especially in a city like Vegas. They will know the good shots, what works, etc, since there is so much to choose from. Also, don’t know if you have a helper from the hotel where the wedding is, but you should contact the concierge of the hotel. They might be able to hook you up with special places that you might never have thought to take photos and/or get you into places that would normally be locked.

@Miss Unicycle: That reminds me that pinterest would be a great resource for this! Thanks, Uni!
@carol: Thats a great suggestion! I have to admit that the fact our photographer has shot multiple weddings at our venue made me feel more comfortable in hiring him! Since he knows the layout, he will be able to orchestrate cool shots in neat locations!

All photographers operate differently, but for a lot of us that have been doing this for awhile we don’t really need to operate on “must have lists” aside from family photo groupings. It’s important to hire a photographer whose work you trust well enough that you don’t need to actually have some sort of checklist for them to be marking off during the wedding. That being said, I also would recommend not immediately disqualifying a photographer who has not shot at your venue. Some of our best work is done when we are shooting in a space for the first time. It can be tough to be inspired in a venue you have shot multiple times in.

@continuumphotography: Good points. Thanks for your comment!

I think the vast majority of the shots we are brainstorming involve family members; for example, my parents are divorced, so I will need to make sure we have me+mr+dad+new wife, me+mr+mom, me+mr+mom+dad, me+dad+new wife, me+mom+new wife, me+mom+dad, etc. I also am going to have some tiny accessories (charms, for example) that I would like shots of, and I understand how they might be missed if I don’t make it a point to request those pictures.

I like to think of the list as a “I’d really like a shot of these things that are particular to me/my FI/our family” rather than “I don’t trust that you’d take these kinds of shots otherwise.”

I like that our photographer is familiar with our locations because we aren’t! That’s the negative of having a destination wedding. If we were local to our venue, I think I would care much, much less about that. :)
