It's funny to say out loud, but we're former coworkers turned betrothed---now planning a wedding in the city of Brotherly Love. For three years, we've been eating our way through Philadelphia, playing tourist at home, and cheering for every sports team in the 215. Although we've hit some unplanned snags along the way, we're determined to have a rocking party this spring with our loud, fun families and friends.

“How’d He Do It?”

December 1st, 2011 @ 11:27 am by Miss Turkey

“How’d he do it?”

If I had a nickel for every time someone has asked me that question…I’d be able to…maybe cover an appetizer for one of our guests. The point is, you have to have your story down. Every family member, friend, vendor, acquaintance, store clerk, and bus driver will ask you to tell about that fated event. Don’t get me wrong—I LOVE telling the story, but I’ve told it a LOT over the past few months. And I think that’s a bit unfair.

That’s right—I think the men get it easy. Shouldn’t they find themselves recounting the events of that evening to the guy on the next weight bench over?

OK, maybe that’s a bit of a stretch scenario but, in my opinion, the proposal is really Mr. Turkey’s story to tell. After all the time and effort put into planning…he should be able to tell his side of the tale. And so here, in Mr. Turkey’s own words, is the story of our engagement.

Hi there…Mr. Turkey here. You don’t know me, but if you were to list the top 100 traits to describe me, I am pretty sure that “spontanous” would not even make the honorable mention. But that is probably what made our engagement night so special.

So, I had the ring*, and all I needed to do was actually get rid of that thing as soon as possible so that Miss Turkey wouldn’t find it first. I wasn’t sure exactly when would be the best time to pull the trigger—especially considering Miss Turkey books my social schedule months ahead of time—but once again, everything worked out perfectly.

Just three weeks after I got the ring, we had a very unusually warm Friday in February. I had made some tentative plans to propose but didn’t fully commit until I saw what a nice night it turned out to be. So, we got dressed up and started walking toward one of our favorite BYOBs in the city. I put the ring in my pocket and decided, for once, that I wouldn’t have a plan and would just do it when the time was right.

About halfway there we stopped in a park a few blocks from our apartment called Fitler Square. We were running a little early for our reservation and sat on a bench in the corner of the park. After a few minutes of joking around and telling stories, I realized that we were the only people in the park. This is very rare, as this park always has people, babies, dogs, and squirrels running around at all times. However, at this moment it was just us, so I decided now was the time.

I don’t really recall what I said after that, but I do know that somebody walked by about two minutes later and this picture was taken…so I must have done something right and we were engaged!

Obligatory ring shot moments after the engagement (Note the wine just chillin’ on the bench.)

After that, we made some quick calls to our parents and then went off to enjoy a wonderful dinner!

Yummy dessert!!

Since I hadn’t had enough fun surprising Miss Turkey yet, I told her at dinner that we’d be heading to New York City the next day for some time alone and a Broadway show.

Outside “The Lion King”—we were dying to see this show together!

I must say, it all worked out perfectly, but it was too nerve-racking for me to be spontaneous, so consider this my first and last time. But it was worth it for a good story.

So, ladies, when someone asks, do you tell your engagement story or let your fiance?

*The ring is a whole separate story…we’ll get to that later!

My FI had a general plan in mind for about 2 weeks and had been plotting with friends of mine that were helping him. But he changed how he was actually going to do it about 5 times the day of!

This is so sweet, and I love that you had Mr. T share your story! I always make Mr. P tell our story–he’s so much better at it than I am, and I love how his face lights up when he talks about planning those three days of surprises for me. I only think I’ve told our proposal story once or twice. I guess I’ve gotten off easy! :)

@MaggieL: Wow - that’s a lot of change! Were you surprised by the proposal or did you know something was “up” after those 2 weeks?

This is really cute. If I asked Mr. P to write our story or tell it - it would be like 2 sentences long. ha. I tell it best so I get stuck with the storytelling. The first few months I wanted to tear out my eyelashes from how many times I had to re-tell it.

Mr. Unicycle always makes me tell our story! It’s annoying!

This is such a sweet story though. I love that it was spontaneous! That makes it so much more romantic. Good job Mr. Turkey! :)

I think if I had a nickel for every time someone had asked me “how he did it” I could cover an appetizer, dinner AND dessert for one of our guests. It’s funny, I had never thought to let Mr. B tell the story ;) thanks for the idea!

@Miss Porcupine: Haha! That’s usually how Mr. Turkey is. I felt like maybe we should make a recording of the story and save our voices…you could have saved your eyelashes :)

@Miss Unicycle: I’m sure you can convince him somehow!!

@Tayylin: Wow - that’s a lot of storytelling. You need the recording more than me!

@Mrs. Pony: @bRooklynRocks: Thanks! I agree with you both, but then again, I’m biased.
