The Story of the Ring

December 2nd, 2011 @ 12:02 pm by Miss Turkey

After the “How’d he do it?” question often comes a violent grabbing of your hand for a look at the sparkly* ring upon your finger. Oohs and ahhs naturally follow.

Besides the obligatory “thank you” after someone looks at my ring, though, I feel the need to tell a more detailed story…one that gives Mr. Turkey extra kudos (more than those necessary for making such a large purchase/commitment). Focus group of one, but I think he did a pretty amazing job and went a bit above and beyond. Like with the proposal story, I think it’s his to tell, so I’ll turn over the keyboard…

Hi all—it’s Mr. Turkey. I’m back again. This is not going to be a regular thing, though. I’m going to leave wedding blogging to the experts. As for sports blogging, hmmm…I might have something there. But I digress.

A few months before we got engaged, I started researching “engagement rings” online. Very quickly I realized that I didn’t know what I was doing and transitioned to something that I am much better at—procrastinating online. Luckily for me, on a family trip to Disney World, I was able to sneak away from Miss Turkey long enough to ask both her parents for some assistance or advice. It sure made it easy for me that they responded (…and I am paraphrasing) “Go with your gut and find a jeweler that you trust.”

That sounded easy enough; however, I soon found out that no ring had all of the traits that I knew would be right for Miss Turkey. I wanted one piece from this ring, another trait from that ring, etc. Once again I was lucky enough that her parents had a family jeweler in New York that they have been going to for the past few decades. After one email and a quick call, he basically took all the traits I wanted and combined them into my own custom engagement ring!

After a little maneuvering of the truth with Miss Turkey, I was able to arrange for a trip up to upstate New York to pick up the ring while she thought I was visiting friends in NYC. I am still not sure how she didn’t find out (because there isn’t much that gets by Miss Turkey), but the trip was flawless, along with the ring. Now, considering the ring was probably worth more than the sum of all my consumer expenses in life to that point, I didn’t let it out of my sight until I got back to my apartment in Philadelphia…which meant I basically spent the rest of the weekend in New York carrying around an engagement ring like a kid carries his blankie (not that I’d know anything about that).

So, without further ado, I’ll end with some ring shots for you all to ooh and ahh over (I hear that happens).

Miss Turkey had a bit of a photo shoot with the ring when we got to NYC.

The goal was to show off the side channel-set diamonds.

Perhaps you’d like to see one on her hand??

Anyone have a unique story behind their ring that they enjoy sharing?

*At least you hope it’s sparkly…just me, or does anyone else find themselves extremely preoccupied with ensuring that their ring is squeaky clean at all times? Mr. Turkey thinks it’s unnecessary to worry and that a little fingerprint now and then never hurt anyone. I think I need a professional buffer machine in my bathroom.

AHHH I love this… *sigh*
Mr. Overall went above and beyond as well, as far as building a ring putting $$$ down and then telling the company..”its just not quite right…” After his long search he came across a vaulted vintage piece from the 50’s. Back then the engagement and wedding band were already together and while you are engaged you are to wear the engagement towards your heart, and when the big “i do” comes about the ring is flipped and the wedding band will be towards the heart <3 really looking forward to spinning this number around!

Beautiful ring Miss Turkey!! Mr. Turkey did an awesome job! And I do have to agree with you on the buffer machine! When I first got my ring I was cleaning it every morning while I brushed my teeth! I have eased up a little now cleaning it only 3 or 4 times a week!! haha! :)

Good job, Mr. T! You have amazing taste! BTW, I’m curious about the detailing on the prongs. It’s so pretty, but I can’t tell what it is exactly.

I clean mine at least once a week, and we’ve been engaged 9 months :)

Great story! FI snuck around like crazy behind my back to get my ring, and I was absolutely clueless. I was so proud of him!

Thanks all! Now Mr. Turkey doesn’t think I’m crazy for ring cleaning :) and he appreciates all the kudos.

@Jessoverall: That sounds beautiful and so meaningful. Good for the Mr. not accepting something that wasn’t perfect for you.

@Mrs. Parasol: @Miss Fox: There are 3 channel set diamonds on each prong. Hard to photograph. Also, he is digging the Mr. T name. Might have to make a change in what I call him.

@Miss Hawk: High five given!

@Miss Turkey: You tell Mr. T we’ll only continue calling him that if he inserts “I pity the fool!” into the next post he writes for us!

it’s GORGEOUS!! I am also obsessed with cleaning mine. It’s amazing how even just rinsing it for a few seconds makes it sparkle so much more!

My fiance completely custom made my ring. I had originally shown him a kind of basic idea of what my ideal ring would be (about 2 years before he actually proposed) and it was a relatively cheap ring from Kay. Now that I have it, I found out that he thought that the one I showed him “wasn’t good enough for [me]” and decided to custom make a new one for me. He picked out all of the settings and fasteners and everything. He even had the jeweler combine platinum and white gold so it would be shiny and sturdy at the same time!

The overall value of the ring I actually got is over 10 times the value of the one I showed him. And it’s definitely worth it. The diamond is so much bigger and shinier and you can see the accent stones but they don’t take away from the center diamond, it’s wonderful. And the whole time (apparently he’d been planning it for about 15 months) I had absolutely no idea!

It isn’t a traditional ring, either. It has a diamond in the center, yes, but the side stones are: peridot (my birthstone), blue topaz (his birthstone), and a black diamond. I absolutely love my ring and the fact that he designed it and that it’s significant to both of us with our birthstones in it. I also get a lot of compliments because it’s so different from the norm!

Had to show off a little. :)
