Skeezy Dress Searches

Skeezy Dress Searches : wedding chicago resources wedding dress Dress W02 dress-w02

After the appropriately timed record-scratch sound woke me from my wedding-dress-lust-induced reverie, I realized that finding a dress would be harder than I thought. Besides the fact that most wedding dresses bore me and I have an oddly shaped bod, my dress budget was also mere peanuts. What’s a girl to do? Enter my BFF, Google.

I began searching for vintage-reproduction wedding dresses because I knew those were the only dresses that made my lil heart go pitter patter. And perhaps I’d find one similar to the Stephanie James dress, except, ya know, not the price of a used car. Mrs. Pretzel’s dress search posts were very helpful to me, which led me to discover Posh Girl Vintage, Dolly Couture, and Porshes Place (an Etsy shop). Vintage reproductions weren’t really right for me either, since most were tea length or shorter.

Here’s a cute short dress.

Just a tad too short.

I even delved into the world of Chinese designer knockoffs for a while. I sent the Stephanie James pics to a few companies overseas and received quotes of about $200! I can’t remember who I reached out to. I think one was Dressily Me. I couldn’t believe that I could get my dream dress for less than 10% of the original cost! Then my friends and family brought me back down to earth and reminded me that that was exceptionally skeezy. What if they did a terrible job or used poor quality fabric? What if they took the money and ran? And even if they did deliver a beautifully made designer knockoff, I would feel kind of bad for the designer. Is this even legal? I’m really not sure.

My next discovery was the plethora of “modest” wedding dresses for religious ceremonies, from sites like Latter Day Bride and Beautifully Modest. I don’t consider myself a particularly modest or immodest dresser, and I’m definitely not a Latter Day bride, but I do kind of lean toward more modest-looking wedding dresses, just because I think they’re prettier. I don’t like tight or strapless dresses, so I guess I’ll go modest if that means I can have some sleeves!

I’d totally wear this if it just had some sleeves.

I think this one is pretty!

The beading is a little much, but other than that I like it!

But even the modest dresses weren’t doing it for me. Plus, they weren’t that cheap, either. At this point in my dress search, I felt like I’d sufficiently scoured the internet and brick-and-mortar bridal shops and come up empty handed. I did, however, have one final trick up my sleeve…

Would you consider buying a designer knockoff dress from overseas? And do you think modest wedding dresses are pretty or prudish?

My dress was from China (Shame on me I know) but we had a small small small budget considering this is a second wedding for us and I have 4 children. I got a great deal on a great dress. I had to have it shortened and taken in but the cost of the dress and the alterations didn’t even come close to what a similar dress would have cost in the “brick-and-mortar” stores.

I definately considered buying a China dress! I ordered one off Ebay…but, they took my money and I never got the dress, or a refund.
:( If you go that route make SURE you do your research!!!

I bought a knockoff dress as well. It arrived within about 3 weeks time and is exactly what I ordered (just without the fancy label sewn in). I was able to customize it to fit as well as add in a corset back for no charge. The quality is equal to what I would have found in a bridal store. I would bet money that the knockoff dresses sold online from China are the exact same dresses, made by the exact same people.

i was really surprised by how many fashionable dresses latter day brides had on their site. Modest is hottest after all haha - i can wait to see the dress you picked!

we ordered our BM dresses from china (after much deliberation) from light in the box and they turned out lovely - im actually wearing one to a black tie wedding next weekend :)

I thought about buying a knock off for like 5 minutes, but honestly I had heard one too many horror stories on the boards and was way too nervous.

I actually considered it for a split second, but the thought of something going wrong scared me too much!

I never really considered a knock off, the cost/benefit analysis just never added up for me, but I love seeing when I works out for other ladies!

@Bobbi: I was definitely considering a Chinese knockoff for a while, so no shame!!

@lmc183: oh no! I’m so sorry that happened to you :(

@amyalmighty: you may be right, and I love hearing of Chinese knockoff success stories! But the dress I loved was designed and sewn in the US, so a Chinese version definitely would have been a knockoff.

@totheislnds: “Modest is hottest” hahahah!! I’m using that from now on :)

I love my knockoff dress! Definitely a nerve-wracking experience, but it paid off. I think that this post:

http://offbeatbride.com/2009/03/the-ethics-of-an-off-shore-wedding-dress

over at OBB sums up my feelings on buying knockoff of designer stuff. Buying knockoff clothes/accessories based on a multimillionaire designer’s line:ok (David’s Bridal is basically all knockoffs of other designers to begin with) Buying knockoff of artisan designs: bad.

I’m excited to hear your final trick. ;)

I’m considering buying a knock-off from DressilyMe or one of the other well-reviewed companies. Most designer dresses are already made in China, so to me it’s not much different. I just don’t like the idea of spending so much on a dress solely due to its label, especially when it’ll only be worn for one day. I don’t have money laying around for that kind of thing.

There are some really cute modest dresses out there! It’s so nice to know that the two aren’t mutually exclusive. And I totally feel the same way as you do about replica dresses. I get that the price is attractive, but as a writer who has had my own work stolen and plagiarized, the whole replica dress thing is just kind of skeezy to me.

Dang it, I just looked at a whole site of them and now I can’t find it in my history. I got to the site from Pinterest, they were beautiful and super reasonable.

I’m a big fan of sleeves, so I wound up looking at more modest sites. Not really a sheer Pnina Tornai kind of gal.

I don’t think you should worry if other people think a sleeved dress will be “prudish.” It’s your day - you can dress how you want and everyone has to tell you you’re beautiful!

And I think that Latter Day bridal dress is absolutely gorgeous!

I love the ones with sleeves :) I never really considered a replica dress, although I’m sure it would have been much nicer on my budget!

Can’t wait to see what that trick was. And I’m with you…I love sleeves.

@Roe: that is a great point! I’m pretty sure the dress I loved was more of an “artisan’s design” situation, so I would have just felt bad!

@CupcakeKelly: here’s a hint: i already sort of mentioned it in one of my dress posts! Now you’re on the edge of your seat, right? haha

@lisaelanna: yeah I’m not worried about people thinking I’m prudish. I guess i was just wondering what the general consensus was. My friends thought it was weird that I was looking at a site called Latter Day Bride, like I would be found out for being Catholic hahhahah

Why not try on ambersbridal.com. There having some nice dresses. After all, it always costs lots of time to find an ideal dress.
