Miss Hawk, Richmond, VA Age and Occupation: 26, Finance Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, District Supervisor Engagement Date: March 13, 2011 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: The Chapel of the Sir Christopher Wren Building, 2007 Legacy Hall About Me: I’m an Arizona-born girl who has spent the majority of my life living below the Mason-Dixon line. We are planning a traditional Christian ceremony at my alma mater in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, followed by a rocking reception filled with Southern cooking and vintage/shabby chic details. When we’re not wedding planning, we enjoy spending time with our three dogs, going for runs together, watching plenty of football (or baseball depending on the season), and sampling new wine.

Lusting After Lighting

December 2nd, 2011 @ 9:11 am by Miss Hawk

There is something so elegant and classic about a monogram. And us Southern ladies just L.O.V.E. a monogram. Bags, jewelry…hell, we even monogram our cars! (No really, our cars.)

So what does this have to do with the wedding? Well, naturally I wanted to incorporate Mr. Hawk’s and my newly minted monogram into our wedding reception. And what better way to do that than use a Globo light? (And while we’re at it? Add a little uplighting!)

To be honest, when I started doing research about professional lighting in the area, I had no idea how much it cost. I just went about my merry way, visiting websites and blogs and trying to find the best vendors. Well, finding the best vendor in the Richmond/Hampton Roads area wasn’t really a problem. I fell in love with one right away. Their work was amazing and the reviews I read had nothing but good things to say. I set up an appointment and visited Rachel at the Richmond design studio. In an adjacent room they actually have a mini mock-up wedding reception set up where Rachel showed me the color options, pinspotting, and my beloved monogram. It was awesome to see the different color and lighting options in person. (I’m such an easy sell!)

This is when the hard part came: we sat down to talk numbers. And the number that I had in my head? Well, suffice it to say that it was about half of the going rate. Now, I know that they would be worth every penny. Besides the setup and take-down of all the lighting (uplighting, Globo, pinspotting), they also keep technicians on hand all night for troubleshooting! The budget part just absolutely KILLS me. Adding the lighting could pretty much eliminate our floral budget. (Cue internal cringe.) I still brought it up to Mr. Hawk for his opinion, at which point I’m pretty sure he just rolled his eyes, thinking “There she goes again, imagining we have an unlimited budget.” And this time when I brought it up a week later (and maybe the next week AND the next week after that)? The answer was still N-O.

Because I tend to be super persistent when I really want something, I’m not ready to let this dream die quite yet. I know there has got to be a way that I can finagle our budget to make this work. So file this one in the undecided category. (And in my head I’m praying this is the one post Mr. H decides not to read. Love you, honey!)

How do y’all feel about professional lighting? Is it a must-do or something that can be skipped?

Honestly, I don’t like elaborate event lighting…mostly because I grew up in the land of over-the-top weddings (a lot of Four Weddings episodes are filmed where I grew up) and have seen my share of it. I associate it with huge affairs and because my wedding is going to be more intimate, I don’t think we’re going for it.

We have a friend who is part of an event lighting/AV company in Virginia Beach. I don’t know if they are expensive or reasonable, but I’m happy to put you in touch, if you want their contact info.

Have you thought about using a removable vinyl sticker with your monogram for the dance floor? I’m not sure what your budget is, but at $200 a vinyl monogram is probably cheaper than what they’re asking for lighting. There are also cheaper and DIY options for the same effect. Here’s one option:

I am obsessed with uplighting and a gobo. I got some ridiculous quotes at first. Then I kept pricing around. I was eventually able to talk my AMAZING dj into doing it for a fraction of what lighting companies quoted me. Keep plugging away- you will find a deal.

We had lighting. Just uplifting and band/dance floor lighting. It’s expensive!!! (and I’m in Los Angeles!) But- worth. Every. Damn. Penny. It lends more to the atmosphere than flowers do I think. You can get away w smaller simpler centerpieces bc the lighting Just creates this amazing glow and ambiance and sets the mood so well!

use a regular spotlight and DIY something over top to illuminate your monogram?

The florist we booked is also a design studio that does all the uplighting, pin lighting, monograms, draping u name it. So were getting a better deal with the flowers if we add any of the other details. Of course I want to add EVERYTHING but I’m not sure what Mr. LuckE will allow. Right now we agree on some uplighting…pink of course! and some draping. I’m definitely going to try for the monogram ;-) I don’t think the professional lighting is a must but I do think it can really add that something extra to wow people!

We made uplighting a priority because our venue really needed it (big, white, open room); but if you don’t need it I’d save the money for something else you really want.

I got super lucky in my uplighting search - i wasn’t even searching for it actually because i figured it was money better spent elsewhere but when I met with my DJ for the first time (he was AMAZING -anyone in the Charlotte/Raleigh area looking for a DJ with fantastic uplights hit me up) he mentioned uplighting and if we wanted it. The cost: $200 for the long LED lights that go the length of the wall and while i was amazed the price, knowing my parents were paying for the DJ, i politely declined. After weeks and weeks of battling with myself i called him up 4 days before the wedding and asked if we could add them on - i actually wrote him a check for them as i was getting into my wedding dress at the church. I was really happy with them especially going into thinking i wouldnt be able to afford them. They really added a little something extra to the room - now if it had been anything over that price i probably would have gone without.

I’m definitely budgeting for uplighting. Our venue has these tall, gorgeous ceilings and it will make a huge impact.

I’d love pinspotting and a monogram, but I know we can’t afford it! Oh well.

Our venue packs the weddings in–there is usually a Friday, Saturday & Sunday wedding there. Our DJ who also does event lighting lets brides ’share’ uplighting and pinspotting (of course, the colors have to be mutual ‘likes’ by both brides) but it really saves a lot of $$. Of course, the 2 weddings before/after ours didn’t use uplighting :-( Any chance of your venue doing the same thing??

@Miss Mink: Hmmm…might have to take you up on that. Thanks Miss M!

@toshella: I hadn’t heard about these. Great suggestion!

@jackndiane: I’m hoping to be as lucky as you!

@Margarita: Ugh. I’m making Mr. Hawk come read this. He needs to know the truth. ;)

@Aisling10: I’ve heard of people DIYing globos. I should probably do some more research…

@luckE bride Jen: Lucky lady! Hope you get the monogram too!

@Mrs. Pony: The reason I’ve been so set on it is because our room is very vanilla, which is great because it works for everyone. But I definitely want to dress it up!

@totheislnds: I’m glad it worked for you!

@September29: Uplighting looks so spectacular with high ceilings!

@bridesmomma: Not something that I had looked into, but I will now. Thank you for the suggestion!

At least one of the DJs we talked to offered lighting in their packages (monogram and uplighting). Since you’re in Williamsburg, you could check them out- Tidewater DJs (well, if you’re doing a DJ)

Funny, it’s not something that even crossed my mind! But your inspiration photo is so elegant…. our venue doesn’t need it, plus it has tons of natural light and is a daytime reception so it wouldn’t work anyway.

I hope you at least get your monogram!

Our venue rocks and includes uplighting (woo hoo!), but the Gobo for our monogram is extra. Still haven’t decided if we’re going to spring for it… But probably not. :-\

Haha, I’m glad to find out where the obsession with monograms comes from! People were always bugging me about monograms, and I was like, “What??? Is that really such a big deal?” Now I feel like I just missed out! I guess things are also complicated since Mr. P and I don’t share a last name–and I certainly wasn’t up for creating two separate monograms. :)

I definitely think it depends on the venue - fortunately, we don’t really need (or want) any extra lighting, but I do love the effect of uplighting!! My girlfriend is going nuts over trying to find an affordable option, so I hear you on the price thing. Good luck!

@mdove07: Thank you for the suggestion.

@Lexy: Eeek. Me too!

@TinyTina: Wow. Included uplighting? Awesome.

@Mrs. Parasol: Glad I could shed a little light on the monogram obsession. ;)

@Miss Fox: Thanks, Miss Fox. I’m gonna need it…

Interesting post! Lighting isn’t something we thought about or need at our venue, but I saw how much of a difference it could make at my sister’s wedding. Good luck on figuring this issue out!

If you like globo lights, check out custom gobos! It’s very similar to a globo light, and you can also do monograms with it. Wikipedia has some good examples of how to use it. Really popular at weddings to boot!

Good luck with your wedding!!
