Bye Bye Buttons

December 5th, 2011 @ 7:34 am by Miss Dalmatian

Let me just preface this post by saying that I love my dress and every lovely detail of it. But let’s get down to the nitty gritty. Okay fine, not so much nitty gritty as silky smooth, but that just doesn’t have the same ring.

Ever since I started looking at wedding dresses (we are talking long before my engagement here, bees), there was one little detail with which I was completely enamored: buttons. I loved the look of a little row of buttons all lined up down the back of a dress. It just seems so much more special than a zipper, even if there is a zipper hiding underneath. I was completely drawn to these little suckers, and couldn’t get enough. Buttons all the way to the ground? Love. I do not care that the skirt of a dress does not need to be buttoned. Like most obsessions of mine, my fascination with buttons had nothing to do with practicality. Rather, it has to do with the romantic feel they embody. I can’t quite explain it, but something about pictures like these just make my heart melt:

Plus, you could have a wedding cake with matching buttons! I’m just saying.

I tried on some dresses with buttons, and squealed with delight when I caught a glimpse of my back in the three way mirror. I tried on some dresses with plain zippers up the back, and the sales people assured me I could add buttons upon learning of my fixation on the darn things.

But alas, the dress I fell in love with does not have buttons, nor does it have a zipper up the back. It has a zipper up the side. I am quite certain that side buttons are not be an alteration I will be attempting.

So, after years of a splendid love affair, I have parted ways with the idea of being buttoned up on my wedding day.

Were there any details you always dreamed you’d have that you had to sacrifice when you chose your wedding dress? Anyone else have a weirdly passionate love of buttons?

LOVE buttons, will in fact be adding them to my dress. I always passionately dreamed I’d have this elaborately beaded gown, but when it got down to it, I knew I wouldn’t feel comfortable with the beads rubbing the underside of my arms all day, and for that little sacrifice of comfort, I’m totally happy with my decision.

I LOVE buttons and am happy that my dress has buttons going the whole way to the end of the train. It adds something special to it and it’s by far my favorite part of the dress.

I know how you feel, i was dead set on having a corset back and none of my top 3 dresses had a corset back. Mine does have buttons though :) my bridesmaids are going to hate me!

Ah I looove the buttons! I tried on a few dresses with buttons allllll the way down the dress. So beautiful! But I actually ended up with a corset dress instead.

Oh, I am totally in love with buttons as well! My dress didn’t have them all the way down to the hemline, but I did have my buttons (even if they were fake), and I totally loved them. Maybe you should that a button cake to get your fix! ;) In any event, your dress is so pretty I’m sure you won’t be missing any buttons on your wedding day.

I never thought I would have a corset but thats what I got. I have realized that many things I thought I wanted, I didn’t, and many things I thought I hated, I wanted. Weird right?!

I thought that I would have a gorgeous lace cut-out back. None of the dresses that I tried on that had that feature were as flattering on me as the dress that I chose. Bah! ;)

I love buttons too and my dress does not have them! I was actually very surprised to find wedding dresses have zippers! Apparently I’m stuck in the 1700s…. I was expecting more natural materials, corsets, and buttons! My dress actually has a row of horizontal decorative buttons now that I look at it… is that weird??

My dress is also a lot more sparkly than I ever imagined it to be. :) Like my mom says, to find your dress dress you’ll pretty much have to have it custom made, and even then your preferences change or don’t mesh well together!

I think I’m having to give up my dream shoe because the shoe I really like is 4″… and that’s just too high for me. I spend 90% of the time in socks.

I didn’t have to have buttons, but was pretty happy that my dress did have them. I absolutely had to have lace on the bottom hem of my dress though, no matter what.

@kappasweetiepie: I would have tried to add them to mine if it had a back zipper for sure. I agree that comfort is definitely a top priority! Not wanting a super heavy dress was important to me.
@Future Mrs. Huban: Jealous! Haha
@RobynD99: It will make for some amazing pictures!
@TinyTina: I like corset backs a lot too, especially what they can do to your figure!
@Mrs. Parasol: Thanks! I’m sure I will not be thinking about it on my wedding day, but I had to do a little venting here :)

@SaraP2012: I totally agree! I didn’t think I wanted any lace, and that’s what I ended up with, and I love it!
@Miss Mole: Haha, there were definitely some dresses I loved that were much more flattering on the model than on me - I feel your pain!
@MissCarnival: yay! I love it! I never even tried it on but I had it saved forever. The buttons are totally to die for.
@BonbonBunny: I don’t think you can go wrong with any kind of buttons! I didn’t realize so many of them were fake buttons with zippers underneath either!
@Jessoverall: Good call :)
@Mrs. Pony: Haha, it’s fun to hear different people’s “must haves”
@Miss Doe: Glad I’m not alone :)

What about adding buttons on your bouquet? I always think that looks lovely.

Sweetheart neckline!!!! I love a sweetheart neckline and it looks ridiculously good on me. But the dress I fell in love with had a straight across bodice. Le sigh.
I’m living vicariously through everyone else: my mother, my bridesmaids, my hostesses, and likely half the guests under 60.
