About Mrs. Mole

Color Me Lazy

December 5th, 2011 @ 1:18 pm by Mrs. Mole

After we got engaged, I was surprised that one of the first questions that friends and relatives would ask was, “So, what are your colors?” Huh? Really? Not about the cake? Or the venue? Or the music? Or the booze? For me, this question about colors seemed to come completely out of left field. I started to think that it was somehow social etiquette: Always be sure to ask a newly engaged woman about her wedding colors! It’s only polite! I stuttered my way through a response, offering up insight such as, “uh…green?” as I motioned frantically for Mr. Mole to offer up his own color choices into the conversation.

Mr. Mole and I aren’t having a bridal party — which means that I am not asking any of my lovely ladies to dress up in the color/s of my choosing or hold complementary hued flowers. Thus I delayed (read: procrastinated on) any decisions about the color palette. Yet it started to dawn on me as to how many other things in our wedding would reflect whatever colors we chose: the invitations, the venue decor, the favor cards, the programs, the bridal accessories, etc. I knew that I needed to start making some decisions.

I ended up finding our colors in an incredibly roundabout way. First, when Googling reviews of Mexican resorts for honeymoon ideas, I came across a photo shoot on Style Me Pretty. The photo shoot took place at Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita, the resort at which Mr. Mole and I got engaged. This bird is even the same one that bit Mr. Mole on the ear. Maybe this is kismet?

What I loved about the colors in this photo shoot was how the touches of pink, turquoise, and coral really popped against the more neutral colors of the background: the sand, the sea, the rattan chairs, the wooden planks of the dock. However, I realized that this particular color scheme screamed a bit too “tropical” for our Vegas tastes. So I moved on, but now with a few ideas in mind — namely, my interest in using coral somehow in our palette.

I started looking for other photo shoots and inspiration boards that incorporated coral in a non-beachy way. Once I stumbled across a blog post on Southern Weddings about the combination of coral, mint, and ivory, I knew that I was sold.

This color scheme is a bit softer than what I imagined that we would go for. It’s also a little bit less popular. Surprisingly, though, this ended up being a color combination that wasn’t too hard to incorporate. Our wedding chapel is decked out in ivory and soft pinks/corals.

Our favor cards and our invitations both were offered in that color scheme.

I even found shoes for our Milwaukee party in a cool, mint green.

I love how everything is coming together, both planning-wise and color-wise. I also like that I now have something specific to say next time my friend or cousin or future-aunt-in-law asks me about my colors!

How did you find your wedding colors? Were you as lazy about picking them as I was, or was it the first thing you chose for your wedding?

I had a slew of colors in mind and eventually, a bridesmaid dress became my favorite and that was it. But, I have a rainbow of colors incorporated into our paper and decor, so we aren’t sticking to a very strict set of colors.

Haha love this! It’s so funny how it has turned into such an important question! I started out with my specific color theme but really, when I find something I like…I just go with it. I tried to force myself into specific colors, and for the most part it has worked…but, sometimes it doesn’t. Love those colors…so gorgeous!

I love your color scheme, it’s so fresh and pretty (plus I love the picture of jadeite in your inspiration board).

The theme color always matters a lot. But I really wanna point out, the first picture looks so CUTE! Some combination, like mint and coral, will definitely make your weddings very legacy. But the first one, casual theme + bright color, also look COOL and make your wedding different from anyone else!

@Miss Mink: I think being flexible with colors is a good idea! Otherwise you run the risk of worrying over shades of difference between the invitation type color and the tablecloths.

@Miss Doe: Thanks! I think Mr. Mole ended up being along for the ride on the coral express. We recently had the following conversation:

Me: Wow, I love the colors of that bungalow!
Mr. Mole: Ugh. Really?
Me: Uh, yeah. What else do those colors remind you of?
Mr. Mole: Our wedding colors? Oops.

I delayed telling him that the house was repainted just in case it meant that he was right about our whole color scheme. Haha.

@Mrs. Pony: I love jade. It’s one thing that I am going back and forth on in terms of including in my accessories or our decor, just because of its connections to Chinese traditions and its cultural meanings.

@Wedding Reception Ideas: The first picture is really cute — and looking at it again made me pause a bit. I do like how it’s different, but I worried it wouldn’t mesh well with our space. If we ever have a vow renewal in Mexico, however, I already have my colors picked out! ;)

I was super lazy about wedding colors as well, and I think we had five or six of them in the end. I kind of just went with a feel and tried to make sure everything sort of coordinated. I love what you’ve come up with!

I’m six months from my wedding and still don’t feel like I have “colors”. I have dresses picked out and flowers on my mind, but I am mostly just picking things I like and hoping it all comes together in the end. My fiance likes to answer with “white and clear” when people ask. It cracks me up :)

My answer was/is always: “I don’t know” or “lots of colors” with the addition of “but no matter what there will be pink” :) I love the the colors of your inspiration board - and they are very unique!

That is a beautiful colour scheme!

We started out with fall colours. As I love orange! But every time we were thinking about how to incorporate these colours it wasn’t working. So one morning we laid in bed and threw out colour combinations. We eventually settled on b&w with lime green accents. This turned out to be so easy to do and looked great.

@Mrs. Parasol: We are also doing a lot of neutrals as well in our decorations: white, ivory, tan, etc. It just makes things easier on us to mix!
@bridester: Haha, that’s a great answer! I wish I would have read your comment a few months ago. ;)
@Miss Unicycle: I am saving another scheme for our next dinner party!

@Miss Dalmatian: Thanks! I really like them too. I love all of your splashes of pink (especially those Kate Spade dresses).
@LongDistancePlanning: I bet that does look great. The lime will provide such an interesting accent to the black and white. (Orange is also one of my favorite colors, but I couldn’t figure out what to pair it with.)

Ha! I did the same thing…. no bridal party so I didn’t deal with the color issue. Mr Lox was all “Why do we need colors?” and I agreed. We were rebels!

Then I realized I wanted table coverings, a cake, some flowers, invitations….. yeah. We picked some colors. ;)

Love the colors you have selected! I let my bridesmaids pick their dress entirely including color, so I passed the decision off. I do agree though that people really care about colors - my MIL kept hounding me about what colors I was picking.

Really nice. What’s the name of the color? On the tables not the coral.

So pretty!! I’ve been lazy about colors — I still haven’t completely decided what they will be! :-X

@Mrs. Lox: Haha. We were going along just fine — questions aside — until we realized that we had to order our invitations and thus pick some colors for something.
@paw: Thanks! I think I would have gone the route of “wear a nice dress you look good in, bridesmaids!” if we were to have been a little more traditional. I think it’s easier on everyone!
@Fanni Lang: On the tables in the third picture? It looks like fuschia. I wonder if you could email the stylists for more specific information? The link to their website is under the picture.

@Miss Hawk: Thanks! I like them even more now that I finished the invitations and don’t have to stare at coral and sage all of the time. ;)
@TinyTina: When’s your wedding? We are now less than 2 months away from our wedding, and this was a decision that just recently happened.
