Gathering Floral Inspiration

December 5th, 2011 @ 12:25 pm by Miss Mink

Mr. Mink proposed right around the time I joined Pinterest. Normally, one wouldn’t connect joining a website to getting engaged, but I probably wouldn’t have explored Pinterest so early if I wasn’t starting to look at wedding blogs. Pinterest was how I organized my inspiration pictures. The very first board I created was for flowers.

I love flowers. Usually, I’d scoff at buying something with a very short life span, but practicality goes out the window when I see pretty blooms. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bridal bouquet that I didn’t like, but this one is my absolute favorite:

When I first saw this bouquet on Snippet & Ink, I loved it. I quickly tracked down florist Holly Chapple’s website and her blog. I found out that she’s particularly proud of this bouquet, as it was the third one she made for the three daughters in one family. I was surprised to find out that the she was in Virginia! Alas, she is at least three hours away, in the Washington, DC area.

There is no shortage of amazing florists in Charlottesville, and I started looking at websites and blogs to get a sense of the different options I had. I wasn’t quite ready to make appointments, so I kept gathering inspiration. Everyone told me to have pictures of what I wanted when I met with florists. I was having a lot of trouble narrowing the options down.

At one point, I mentioned table arrangements to my mother, and she told me that the centerpieces at a wedding she went to that weekend had hydrangea in them and she thought that was very different. It sounds like the flowers at the wedding she went to would have fit in almost anywhere in the South but seemed understated in New Jersey.

You’ve probably seen a Jersey wedding on TV at some point between Four Weddings and that David Tutera show on WE. Rooms are full of color, flowers are often in very tall vases and erupt like waterfalls from the top, with crystals dangling between the stems. It’s two parts wedding, one part theater. We go big in Jersey.

But I’m not in Jersey. I’m in Virgina. I’m getting married at a vineyard. I started thinking about the overall feel we wanted at our wedding, and floral ideas started to emerge.

I think our centerpieces will be low, with a fairly simple palette. Flowers with strong lines, like calla lilies, and exotic flowers like birds of paradise didn’t feel right anymore. Peonies, garden roses, and hydrangea started showing up in in greater numbers on my Pinterest board.

Do you love flowers or do you think they are a frivolous expense?

If you are using flowers in your wedding, how did you determine what blooms would be included in your arrangements?

I love flowers and I think they’re beautiful, however they were the first to go out of our budget because it’s just not at the top of my priority list. I hope to make my own bouquets and centerpieces, and I think I can come up with designs that are just as gorgeous as the real thing :)

@jocember: I admire your gumption to DIY your flowers! I am definitely leaving it to the pros! I can put together simple arrangements, but I’m not anything close to a floral designer!

We are using silk flowers, to save money and because it is something I can do now and not worry about later (everything in my wedding is DIY). I fell in love with peonies and hydrangeas. I love how full, rich and lush they both look. I just finished my bouquet this weekend and I’m so so so happy with it. As far as the centerpieces go, some will also be silk flowers and others all candles.

Your inspiration pictures are fabulous!!!

@knvprincess143: I’ve always found silk flowers to be really expensive. Granted, they last longer than flowers, but I sometimes wonder if they wind up costing the same.

@Miss Elk: Isn’t it stunning? I usually like simplicity, but I love how complex it is!

Holly said the finishing touches occurred to her in bed! She had made most of it and went to bed feeling like it wasn’t quite done. Something snapped and she realized what she had to do to “finish” it.

Reading her blog had really changed my view of florists and floral designers. Some really are artists.

Wow, can’t pick a favorite from these three pictures — all are gorgeous! I keep coming back to this page to look!

Funny, my first Pinterest board was for flowers, and the first pin was an image from your venue! I’m not sure if it is still on their site but it was a low galvanized pail containing a lantern surrounded by soft roses. Love!

@LaughLines: Oh my gosh, I need to see it! There have been maybe a dozen (maybe fewer!) weddings at my venue and I love seeing images of them! PM me? Let’s connect on Pinterest!

I had that same bouquet saved as inspiration, but have since moved on to another color scheme. Great pic. :)

I love flowers, especially those done by Holly Chapple (is it wrong that I want to have her make arrangements just to put around our apartment because we’re in DC now? Cause I’m totally going to do it.)

I’m not a huge fan of flowers, but I love green plants! I think the fact that your first bouquet pic has a succulent in it is great.

@Mrs. Pony: I was up in Loudoun for work and almost went to see if I could get a little bouquet to have in my hotel room. :)

@Miss Doe: But they’re soooo pretty! ;)

@Miss Mole: I love succulents! I tried to grow my own, thinking I could have them in my bouquet, then put them back in theirvplanters after the wedding. Alas, only two of my original five are still alive. :(

Ohhh, I adore all of your inspiration pictures! Where were you when I was stressing and stressing over flowers? I never settled on anything that was perfect, which I why I’m so glad I did my flowers myself. I just picked what I liked and played with everything till it was exactly what I wanted. No wonder I couldn’t find it in a picture–I had to create it myself! :)
