Miss Doe, Northern California Age and Occupation: 24, Real Estate Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Recycling Manager Engagement Date: December 25, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: Monte Verde Inn About Me: I’m a Rat Pack fan and a Christmas nut that loves to read, good wine, cheesy ’80s movies and ’90s sitcoms. My wiener dog with an attitude problem and lazy basset hound are my constant source of entertainment. He's a hunter and I like cooking so it's not rare to see wild game on our dinner menu. Both of us were born and raised in a small historic farming town where our feet are still firmly planted. We have been together for nearly a decade and have shared many life experiences together, including birthdays that are only one day apart. We are two old souls that are creating our long-awaited wedding with loads of tradition that blends our two styles into rustic elegance in the foothills of Northern California.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

December 5th, 2011 @ 1:49 pm by Miss Doe

I have a secret to spill. I am a Wizard of Oz nerd…big time. It is one of those movies that seems to have been with me throughout my life. Like most people, I grew up watching this movie. I never really had a favorite character because I loved all of them…even the flying monkeys! (Unlike most people, they did not scare me.) I had the entire movie memorized by the time I was eight years old.

When I was younger my mom use to do after school daycare at my house, which was great because there were always kids to play with. I decided that I would put on a Wizard of Oz production with the daycare kids, and then we would perform it for all of our parents. Being that I was the oldest, I of course had to be every main character, as well as the voice of Dorothy.

What is the voice of Dorothy, you ask?

My younger sister begged me to be Dorothy, so I let her, but told her she could not sing. My voice was so beautiful (not) that I was going to hide behind the wall and sing for her while she lip sang. (I obviously was delusional and was a typical older sister.) All the other kids played the munchkins and my three-year-old brother was the wizard. I was rotten and apparently was on a power kick. Our poor parents sat through the entire show and I can only assume they were trying to hide their boredom and laughter.

I love everything about Wizard of Oz, and to this day will still put it on if I need to cheer myself up. It would only make sense then that I would be marrying a guy whose nickname in high school was “The Tinman.” Check it out—he does kind of resemble the tinman.

I could go on forever about my love for Wizard of Oz, but I am sure you are more interested in why I am even bringing this up. When I think about music for the ceremony, one song I cannot get out of my head is Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I have such a huge connection to this song, and it seems only fitting for it to play at the wedding.

On my iPod I have FIVE versions of this song. Why I need so many, I have no idea. I think every time I find a new version I just automatically hit “buy song,” then later regret it when it dings my account. Anyway, I started listening to these various versions and nothing felt right. For me it all felt too “in your face,” and I was searching for a subtle version.

It took some digging but I finally came across an instrumental version by Canon in D music. There is no video format of this song so the best I can do is give you the link if you would like to preview or buy the song on iTunes. I absolutely love this version and I think it is perfect to have playing while our parents and grandparents are being seated before the ceremony.

I feel that music can really make or break things, and I am ecstatic that I found a great version of such an important song. Most likely nobody will notice but I will know it is playing and that is all that matters.

Do you have a song that is important to you that you want played at your wedding in a subtle way?

There are SO many! We are music people. If I could, I’d have music playing at all times during our wedding.

I bet you have Isreal K’s version? I love that one. It’s so beautiful that I often cry when I hear it.

We played all Coldplay for our ceremony (I’m kind of obsessed with them) and the I saw them for the first time with Mr. P, so it made it even sweeter.

This is so cute! I totally love the Wizard of Oz and now have an intense desire to rewatch it tonight. :) I also adore your story about putting on the production of Wizard of Oz–my siblings and I were always doing little shows with our neighbors, and it was so much fun! Our favorite was probably an exposé we did on pulp branching off from orange juice–it was so silly, but our parents loved it!

I actually walked down the aisle to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” It confused some guests, but it was perfect for me.

I love the Canon in D version - beautiful.

Secret reveal - I played the Wicked Witch of the West in one of my first ever theater roles. Not a big fan of green paint since then.

Another amazing version that I’m considering walking down to is Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s. It’s a merge of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and ‘What a Wonderful World’ and is one of my favourite songs to relax to.

I just wanted to say I LOVE WIZARD OF OZ! I just bought a POP! Flying Monkey figurine and a Funko Flying Monkey plushie on black friday!

Unfortunately I didn’t get to pick the song for my wedding, it was a quick ceremony and I wish I had planned it out more differently…

I made my dad a full CD of different versions of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. He loved it. Needless to say, I’m planning on dancing to this song with my dad!

I was a big Wizard of Oz fan growing up too! (I was afraid of the flying monkeys and refused to watch those parts…) So neat that you are able to incorporate this song into the ceremony!

My dad and I are both huge Wizard of Oz nerds. I won’t get into here, but believe it… It’s bad. Hahahah. So of course, we will be dancing to Somewhere over the Rainbow for our father/daughter dance. :)
