About Miss Turkey

For the Love of the Mouse

December 6th, 2011 @ 2:57 pm by Miss Turkey

For children who are lucky enough, a visit to Disney World is an amazing experience. You find yourself in “The Happiest Place on Earth,” surrounded by more stimuli than you could possibly handle.

If you’re a princess lover, you have Cinderella’s Castle and all the Disney heroines from your favorite films. A pirate at heart? Swashbuckler Johnny Depp is not too far away. For the thrill seekers, Space Mountain takes you on a ride in the dark. I could go on, but you get my point.

And I haven’t even acknowledged all the opportunities that exist to open your wallet once you pass through the turnstiles—silly hats (see below), any stuffed animal you could dream of, and treats ranging from huge (no, really huge) turkey legs to popcorn to ice cream in the shape of the park’s iconic mouse.

My first trip to Disney. And my first silly hat.

I should know. I have probably eaten five times my weight in Mickey on a stick (ice cream), could pay for a full year of college by selling my old stuffed animals on eBay, and have hats ranging from Goofy to Daisy Duck. And that’s just me…I have a brother, too. I have been to Disney more times than years I’ve been alive. Personally, I believe this puts me in the running for luckiest (twentysomething) kid on the planet. However, the best part of each visit isn’t just the chance to act like the sum of my age digits but rather the chance to spend time with my family and soak up the positive energy and “happiness” that exists at Disney World.

I know what you’re thinking…this is a wedding blog—why wax poetic about Mickey Mouse?

Well, part of understanding me is to understand my love of Disney. Even friends who visited throughout their childhood still sometimes have difficulty understanding why we visit year after year, riding attractions where we are feet above the height requirement. So, this was clearly something that Mr. Turkey needed to deal with, accept, and experience in real life before going down that path toward marriage.

It was almost exactly one year into the Turkey relationship when Mr. Turkey was invited to join my family for our Thanksgiving trip to Disney. I loved him, but this was important. A test, you might say. It was his first time to Disney since the age of five. What if he didn’t like twentysomething Miss Turkey acting like a nine-year-old or thought Splash Mountain was horrible? It might, as they say on 30 Rock, be a “dealbreaker, ladies.”

My family is so stylish—surprised my awkardness wasn’t a dealbreaker for him.

I exaggerate slightly and, in reality, I thought the chance of him believing my family (and me) to be crazy was slim, since he’d been exposed to “the Mouse” in other ways. We saw several of the newer Disney films (Up! and Wall-E) together and have various classics in our Netflix queue (Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Lady and the Tramp). And, most importantly, he had seen numerous pictures (like above) and heard all the stories of past trips and still agreed to come on the annual Thanksgiving trip. We were moving in the right direction.

Much to my chagrin, Disney welcomed Mr. Turkey with rain. A lot of it. I worried such an introduction would dampen the experience (ha.ha.ha.). However, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as Magic Kingdom was nearly empty (by holiday-week standards). Hoods up, we trekked to Liberty Square and chose the Haunted Mansion as our first ride. As we visited the 999 happy haunts, I saw the magic sinking in, especially when the ghost joined us in our buggy. “That was really cool,” he said. “What’s next?”

I won’t bore you with the details of every stop, but the bottom line was that despite the wet weather, we had a fabulous, magical (and incredibly productive) day, ending with a speedy trip around the World Showcase, stopping at each country for a photo op (and maybe a beer). As the days went on, he continued to get in on the fun, making requests for rides and shows he wanted to see, playing with the toys in the shops, and even humoring me with this shot of us in Mickey ears. Bottom line—he got it.

The ears suit him.

On Mr. Turkey’s last day, I asked about his favorite thing. His answer: “Splash Mountain.” No question…that’s “a keeper, ladies.”

Did anyone else’s SO have a test to pass?

Not quite the same as yours - but I made my FI live in the apartment building NEXT to my building before we I would move in with her. I wanted to make sure that we could stand living on the same street, first.

I completely get it. I am totally obsessed with Harry Potter (I listen to the audiobook every single night before I go to sleep) and when Harry Potter World was opening I told my fiance “if you love me at all you will take me here”. He took that seriously, bless him, and our first “big” trip in our entire relationship was to see Hogwarts. A lesser man might have found that silly, but he totally understood.

Im also a disney nerd since childhood. Im a annual passholder for Disneyland. When i started dating my fiance he had maybe been 3 times tops. I bugged him forever to go with me until he finally gave in and got the bug! He is now a annual passholder, we go all the time. He even proposed in front of the castle. Cliche but perfect!

I’m taking Mr. Gazelle to Disney World for the first time ever in January!! He went to Disneyland as a kid but never Disney World. I can’t wait to see his reaction!!! He has already warned me that he will be reliving his childhood while we are there so I figure that totally makes him a keeper! Good thing too since I already married him!

I didn’t have my first trip to Disney World until last year at the age of 26, I am from the Bronx so that is really not unheard for us New Yorkers, however, my fiancee is from Florida and actually worked at Disney World for quite some time in the past, I was a Disney fanatic from afar while he got to enjoy it in real life as part of his daily life!!!!! Anyway, I completely understand what you are saying, if he couldn’t accept the kid in you, he would not have been able to accept the woman you are because deep down or maybe not so deep for some of us, we still have the spirit of children and a certain innocence we never let go of.

I think we must have been separated at birth! My fiance had only been to Disney World once before I met him. He had a work conference near Downtown Disney in February and I went with him and convinced him to spend 1 day enjoying the wonders that is WDW. It started out as him just indulging me, but then he discovered the mystery of the Hidden Mickeys and that’s all it took. While seaching for these little Mickey heads, I saw the kid in him emerge. I loved it. We’re already planning a week vacation so we can spend the proper amount of time in the parks :)

One of my sorority sisters has a three-part love test that potential men must pass. No lie. And my fiance actually suggested we see “The Princess and The Frog” when I went to visit him in Oklahoma a few years ago (personally, I voted for “Invictus”).

Lol! So, I joke (but I’m probably serious) with Mr. Seal that if he didn’t “get” Disneyland that we wouldn’t have gotten married. Long story short—I, like you, grew up going to Disney(land in my case)…but Mr. Seal, being a New Yorker, had never ever been. Had he not understood the transformation that takes place when you walk through those gates…we flat out wouldn’t have worked. THANKFULLY, he totally, 150% gets it. We’re both now proud Annual Passport holders ;) LOVE this post, Miss T…I can totally relate!

My fiance was actually the one to insist we go to Disney World! I live in Florida and have been a few times, but he’s the real fan. :) I suppose my test was walking around the park wearing Minnie ears! I happily obliged.

So I don’t know if this counts, but I totally left the bar the night I met Foxy so I could go wait in line for the last HP book to come out. And yet, he still called…. ;)

Disneyland was totally a test for us… only 2 months into the relationship as well. And it was tricky - because he had an annual pass previously, but I didn’t know if he was truly “ok” with Disney or he was really into it (like me).
Since I’m staring at some Disney art on the wall, I guess you can say everything turned out ok. But it would have been a serious dealbreaker otherwise. :)

I swear I thought the SAME thing when FI and I first visited Disney back when we were dating…although yes, from the giant Kincaid print of Cinderella castle and the way I carry on about trips there and how my dad and I obsess over Disney trivia, plus the fact that I once worked there for the college program, he also got how important it was to me. And I think one of my friends forewarned him that I could never marry someone who wasn’t willing to have at least half of our vacays to be at WDW.

Luckily, he likes it too - I don’t think he’ll ever be a huge Disney geek, but he’s at about the same level as my mom and that’s worked for her and my dad, haha. Hopefully I get lucky like my dad and have a child who will be super into the Disney stuff =)

an ex-boyfriend and i were once talking about where we should go on a weekend trip and i exclaimed “ooo disneyland!” and he replied “ugh…isn’t that place for little kids? plus, i didn’t even like it when i WAS a little kid”
needless to say, he didn’t pass the test :p

When my fiance and I first met, he had never been to Disney. I took him after only a few weeks of dating because it was SUCH a big part of my childhood that if he didn’t love it, I couldn’t love him. He started getting cranky because he was tired at the end of the day, but he’s since gotten over it. Now it’s a big part of both of our lives. That’s where we got engaged and he works there now!

This is so cute! I visited DW with my FI for the first time just a couple months after we started dating. It wasn’t really a test (he’d only been once before) but the mutual enjoyment of being a kid again was part of what convinced me he was ‘the one’. I’d rate that as my favorite vacation ever.

@szaerpoor: Your fiance sounds AWESOME. I fell asleep reading Harry Potter (for the five millionth time) last night, so I get it. :D Sadly, we visited Orlando just a few years ago so we won’t be going back for HP for another couple of years….

So jealous. I haven’t been to visit the Mouse since I was in 6th grade. I cannot wait to take my daughter (and any other children I have) there when she’s older. It’s something that I’m so excited about doing.

The picture of y’all in Mickey Mouse hats is too cute. Mr. Hawk has not been to Disney since he was a child and I’ve been itching to go. I’m hoping to convince him soon!
