Miss Doe, Northern California Age and Occupation: 24, Real Estate Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Recycling Manager Engagement Date: December 25, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: Monte Verde Inn About Me: I’m a Rat Pack fan and a Christmas nut that loves to read, good wine, cheesy ’80s movies and ’90s sitcoms. My wiener dog with an attitude problem and lazy basset hound are my constant source of entertainment. He's a hunter and I like cooking so it's not rare to see wild game on our dinner menu. Both of us were born and raised in a small historic farming town where our feet are still firmly planted. We have been together for nearly a decade and have shared many life experiences together, including birthdays that are only one day apart. We are two old souls that are creating our long-awaited wedding with loads of tradition that blends our two styles into rustic elegance in the foothills of Northern California.

Rehearsal…Lunch?

December 6th, 2011 @ 11:10 am by Miss Doe

I consider myself to be a traditionalist, but if something else works out better then I am not afraid to go in that direction. This is why we will be holding a rehearsal lunch instead of a dinner.

When we started researching options for rehearsal dinner locations, I was absolutely flabbergasted. It seemed anywhere decent I found cost nearly as much as the food at the wedding. I had a hard time wrapping my head around why a large amount of money is going to be spent the night before the wedding (where a large amount of money had already been spent).

Then a thought popped into my head about our venue. Our venue is fairly popular and tends to get booked up every weekend pretty quickly. There is a good chance that there will be a wedding the day before ours. I decided I should check with them on this because if that is the case, then a rehearsal dinner the evening before was not going to work. Sure enough, there is a wedding that Friday evening before ours. Our options are either to hold our rehearsal Thursday evening or a 10AM rehearsal Friday morning.

Well, shoot.

That stinks big time. We are a good hour away from our venue, so it seemed like quite the drive to have to take two days before the wedding. Also, to be completely honest…I wanted the traditional “day before the wedding” rehearsal. Then I started to contemplate the idea of having a Friday morning rehearsal…is it really that bad? Our bridal party was planning on taking that day off work anyhow…so what’s the big deal?

As it turns out, lunch menus are MUCH more affordable than dinner menus. We started to research our options and I came across a quirky little restaurant in Old Town Auburn called Awful Annie’s.

As you can probably tell from the pictures, this place is pretty down home casual. It’s not your typical fancy restaurant where rehearsal dinners (ahem, lunches) are held.

However, their food is out-of-this-world fantastic. Isn’t that what really matters? The cherry on top is that the owners are easy to get ahold of and are as sweet as pie. Instead of having a set menu, they told us we could choose a few options from their regular menu to serve at our rehearsal lunch. Their flexibility, responsiveness and helpfulness was so welcoming to me. I feel this place really fits the bill for us in more ways than one.

My only concern is that I have this guilty feeling that our bridal party will be expecting something more elaborate. Instead it will be a laid back and casual affair. In my eyes, I see this as a great thing. We can relax, drink, and have a grand ol’ time the day before the wedding. I honestly am not too interested in having two fancy shindigs in a row. I would rather have a casual rehearsal lunch, followed by a fancy wedding the next day.

What I have to remember is that our bridal party is made up of our friends. I highly doubt anyone will have issue with a casual rehearsal lunch. In fact, knowing our friends, I think that they will find this even more fun.

What do you think about the idea of mixing things up and having a rehearsal lunch? If you were part of a wedding that did this, how would you feel about it?

I think a rehearsal lunch will make everyone feel at ease before the big day. Your bridal party will likely have a lot of fun :)

I think it’s great! besides a lunch will give you more time to relax and rest before the big day than a dinner.
and that place looks awesome!

I think a rehearsal luncheon is a great idea; you can spend the rest of the night relaxing (and not finishing up any last minute projects ;) )

I think a rehearsal lunch is a great idea - it will be more relaxed and you might like having some time later in the day that isn’t dedicated to a certain wedding related event.

Then again, I might be biased since we’re most likely going to have a rehearsal brunch ;)

I love the idea of a rehearsal lunch! We might do the same thing, there is a wedding the night before ours at our venue too… So we might have to schedule our rehearsal for a bit earlier than originally planned.

We did a rehearsal lunch, and it was great! We took our family and friends to our favorite TexMex joint in Austin - they let us have te patio to ourselves. I think people really appreciated it; especially the out of towners. They were done with wedding duties by 4pm (we had a late lunch at 2) and had the evening to hang out in Austin and relax before the big day. I’m a big fan of the rehearsal lunch!

Ah, im so glad someone posted about this. I am in the process of figuring out our rehearsal meal location and it is very frustrating not to mention also very expensive. We are getting married the Sunday of labor day weekend, meaning rehearsal dinner / lunch should be sat night. Well everything decent is either booked, very expensive, or doesnt want to block off half their room for a 45 person dinner. I havent even started calling around about a sat lunch - or better yet brunch options but that may be much more doable.

I love this! I’m getting married on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend and there’s a wedding at my venue that Saturday, so I’m having a rehearsal brunch. I’m super excited about it - who doesn’t love brunch??

We might not be having any rehearsal meal!! SHOCKING I know, but we’re on a tight budget and it honestly sounds like more added stress at a time when we don’t want or need it.

If we do anything it will be lunch at my mom’s, like sandwiches and beer type lunch.

I think a rehearsal lunch is a great idea! We had to have an early rehearsal on Friday too for the same reason. We went back to the hotel for a bit, then went to an early “tailgate” style rehearsal lunch/dinner at a local sports bar. It was completely down to earth and us and everyone had a blast. I don’t think your wedding party will expect a big fancy dinner- that’s what the wedding is for!

We’re just doing a super small rehearsal dinner (parents, bridal party, grandparents) mostly because of cost.

Hey, our rehearsal meal was lasagne and salad on paper plates with plastic forks in the middle of the hall we were setting up. I didn’t buy a new dress, I didn’t make other people buy new outfits (we were in our grubbies!), there were no extra signs or labels or favours…. we were all full and the next day CB and I were still married.

I say do what you want to do, and forget about any crazy expectations!

Sounds like the perfect solution! I have also been struggling with our rehearsal dinner. I originally wanted something fancy and upscale, but have been rethinking it lately.
