Color Scheming

December 6th, 2011 @ 9:15 am by Miss Unicycle

I’m not sure I realized that weddings had color schemes before I discovered Weddingbee back in the day. My memories from BWB (before Weddingbee) are a little hazy, but I’m pretty sure I just thought all weddings had a lot of white. Silly Unicycle.

When I first discovered all the beautiful inspiration boards on Weddingbee and other wedding blogs, I realized I needed to come up with a color scheme for my wedding, stat! Never mind that I was 20 years old and nowhere near engaged. First I decided on yellow and pink, because pink was my old favorite color and yellow was my new favorite color. I even had an accordion binder I used for school that was pink and yellow already. Perf.

So why’d I change my mind? Well, I was going to say that I realized this color scheme was too tacky, but after putting together this inspiration board, I realize it’s actually quite lovely. And I want it. However, I don’t want to force pink on Mr. Unicycle, so I moved on.

My next thought was to nix the pink and add black and white for some easy neutrals. I decided to add damask to the mix because it was having a moment at the time. It was kind of like 2009’s version of chevrons. (Yeah, feel free to mock me for agonizing over my color scheme two years before the proposal.)

Mrs. Star’s wedding convinced me to switch from damask to polka dots, since I had actually always liked polka dots and I realized I only liked damask because it was trendy at the time. But theeeennnn I saw a polka dotted bumble bee child’s birthday party on a blog and realized it looked exactly like my dream wedding…which looked like a bumble bee child’s birthday party. And so black got the axe.

I’d seen a lot of yellow, white, and gray weddings around the blogosphere, and I really liked them, so I made the easy decision to replace black with gray. While it would have been infinitely easier to find black and white polka dot things than gray and white polka dot things, at least our wedding won’t look like a kid’s party. Though now that I’m a bee, maybe I should have left it!

How did you decide on your wedding colors/theme? Did I put too much thought into this?

I ADORE your final inspiration board…especially that cake. Happy to have been a teeny, tiny part of your planning, too :)

I put entirely too much time into picking my colors. I think it’s funny that we kind of swapped! I started with yellow and gray and ended with yellow, pink, and aqua! BTW, the bowtie napkin is seriously a-maz-ing. I need it!

Too cute! I like the yellow/pink too, but I understand not wanting to force it on your man :)

This is my colour scheme too, so I’ve seen all the same pics from my countless hours trolling online… but nonetheless, I love your inspiration board!
I love your posts and I even showed your engagement photos to my photographer to demonstrate the feeling I wanted in ours.
My fiance makes fun of me but he totally doesn’t understand how Weddingbee brings brides-to-be together!

I’m doing pale yellow, white and hints of gray/silver. I really like the look of yellow and pink though but FI does not - so I’m having a super girly pink bridal shower!

I love the polka dots - both my prom dresses had them (one yellow, one brown) especially those umbrellas!

Lovin your color scheme, though I have to admit that the pink was awesome too. You COULD just have Mr. Unicycle participate in the yellow part of things and have your shoes and flowers etc be the pink, or something like that. And it didn’t look like the decor was overwhelmingly pink (I’ve seen some weddings where their colors were hot pink and magenta).

I have been struggling with an inspiration board in PowerPoint, so I checked out Mosaic Maker, inspired by your boards. Um, THANK YOU.

I’m having an absolute nightmare with our colors. It feels like the colors are going to be the entire “face” of the wedding, and nothing is looking perfect to me. Also, I tend to like really plain things (my wardrobe consists of a lot of grays, blacks, browns), and Im worried that a color scheme that’s too simple/plain will look EXTRA boring once it’s multiplied by a giant space

Love. Love. LOVE. I got really excited when I saw the Shabby Apple pic - I haven’t ever actually purchased from them but I love what I see browsing! Have you bought anything from them before, perhaps that adorable yellow dress? :)

If I were doing yellow and pink, cherry lemonade would be everywhere. Yummy. And I am digging the polka dot manicure.

@Mrs. Star: you actually played a HUGE part in my wedding planning! I definitely have you to thank for the polka dots, which I’m currently elbows deep in. So thanks for the inspiration! Your wedding was one of my absolute favorites!

@Miss Hawk: I can’t wait to see what you do with yellow and pink!

@silvergal56: Awesome! I don’t think fiances ever understand the power of the bee! We’re wedding twinsies :)

@buffalobride40712: I’m hoping there’s a lot of pink at my shower too :)

@Miss Turkey: glad to help! I of course discovered it from a different bee (can’t remember which now).

@szaerpoor: I think a color scheme of all neutrals sounds classy! I was worried about the opposite problem when I was considering pink and yellow.

@Miss Dalmatian: actually yes, one of my bridesmaids bought it as her bridesmaid dress! But that whole thing is still unresolved so I can’t post about it yet. But it’s lovely in person :)
