About Mrs. Mole

Favor Help, Por Favor!

December 7th, 2011 @ 7:35 am by Mrs. Mole

As you may know, we are having two wedding-related celebrations: a reception in Vegas and a party in Milwaukee. This means that I need (or, at the very least, really want) to come up with two sets of unique and fun favors for our guests. I know that favors aren’t necessary, but I think that they can add a nice touch to the event.

Luckily for us, it was pretty easy to come up with favor ideas for Las Vegas. We could give our guests personalized playing cards. We could give them dice embossed with our wedding date. We could give them slot-machine keychains. We could give them poker chips made out of chocolate.

Mr. Mole and I eventually decided on poker chips — but we decided to go for the real deal. Our guests will get $5 chips to play at the Venetian casino. (Or, if they are like me, to cash in at the cage to get money to play the video poker games; for all of the times that I have been in Vegas, I have never played any games at a table. I am too chicken to bet more than a dollar at a time!) We figure that it will allow our guests to have a few more minutes of fun after our reception concludes. Maybe someone will even turn it into a huge profit on the blackjack tables.

Our favors, waiting to be played

The next thing to figure out was how we were going to display these chips at everyone’s seats. I found my solution in a blog post on Weddingbee!

I read that Minted was offering 25 business cards for merely the cost of shipping. I skedaddled over to the website, and I found the perfect design in our wedding colors: Mustard Stripe Business cards in Tomato.

Armed with a pack of glue dots, the customized business cards, and the poker chips, I was able to make pretty quick work of assembling our favors. This is almost as crafty as I get, folks.

How crazy is it that the Venetian’s chips match our color scheme?

Now, though, I have no idea as to what kinds of favors I want for our Milwaukee party. I could go with the ever-popular (for good reason!) candy favors, giving everyone bags of colorful m&ms, gummy bears, or jelly beans.

I could offer up some homemade treats, like my favorite sea-salt brownies or the New York Times chocolate chip cookies. I could even find cute jars to pack them in.

I could go green and offer everyone a packet of seeds, a miniature tree, or a succulent plant. Or we could make a donation in our guests’ names to a local charity or park preserve.

I could even go regional and give everyone something specific to Milwaukee or Wisconsin. Maybe a bottle of Sprecher’s root beer? A pass to the Art Museum? A piece of cheese shaped like a dairy cow? A bottle of Beast? (Ha.)

So, hive, help me out! Do you have any suggestions for our Milwaukee party favors? What are you doing for your wedding favors? (I’d love to borrow some great ideas!)

Mr. Aardvark LOVES Sprecher root beer! (He is a bit of a root beer snob) so I vote for that. But the cow cookies are adorable!

My FI’s grandma is going to help us make small jars of homemade jam. We’re then going to top the jar off with lace, to make it more elegant looking.

I love your poker chip favors! So cute.

I gave out mini bottles of Wollershiem winery wine (prairie fume) but I was thinking of giving out bottles of spotted cow or something from New Glarus since you can only find that in WI! Maybe some yummy cheese curds???? I’m sure you could set something up with the cheese shop at the public market :-) Or I almost did Alterra coffee packets for people. So many WI ideas!!

Now I’m wanting to have a sprecher’s rootbeer float….

You have come up with a lot of great ideas! The poker chips are perfect! I like your idea of giving something local for your Milwaukee party, but I don’t know anyone who would turn down candy or cookies!

I do love the idea of doing something for the location - and seriously who doesn’t love a good wisconsin cheese? Haha, but I think you mentioned a lot of good ideas. I say when in doubt, go with something edible :)

@Miss Aardvark: We have done the Sprecher Brewery tour twice together, and I know that we’ve each done it with friends as well. I drink diet soda, and I think their lo-cal rootbeer is the best diet that I’ve ever had!
@jacinda10: Yum! That sounds like a great favor! Mr. Mole’s sister makes great jam. If she didn’t just have a baby, I might have to ask her for a favor. ;)
@mkewed2010: Ooh, cheese curds would be good. Or maybe the Alterra chocolate-covered coffee beans? Great suggestion to check out the public market; I bet I can find something awesome there. I will have to scope it out when we are back in Wisconsin in a few weeks.

@Miss Hawk: True! I think edible favors are my favorite types. :)
@Miss Dalmatian: Sounds like that’s the way that I should be going. Sorry, succulents! Haha.
@auggiefrog: You and mkewed2010 are now making me want a sprecher’s rootbeer float for breakfast! Or a dessert bar. Do you have any idea about what local goodies you are going to offer?

If I’m thinking correctly your Milwaukee venue isn’t too far from this place http://www.spice-work.com/new/ . If you’ve never been there, it’s pretty much the greatest place ever! The small shop is filed with jars full of spices (they have standards, but also mix their own) and they are named after different locations around Milwaukee! The Wauwatosa seasoning is good on everything, the Third Ward Italian seasoning is awesome and my all-time favorite is the Firefly seasoning (spicy!). Ignore the ridiculously out of date website, the shop itself is addicting!

Or Lakefront Brewery if you’re thinking of a local beer. Be sure to go on the brewery tour, it’s honestly the best one!

Your poker chip favors are so adorable! I don’t have any ideas for Milwaukee, but those little cow cheese pieces look amazing (and tasty).

@forevermandy: Wow, thanks for that idea! I forgot about that company, so I appreciate the reminder. Maybe they have some spice packs for Bay View so we can celebrate our old neighborhood? I agree that the Lakefront Brewery tour is a fun time. We did it right before Christmas last year — and I got a tiny bit tipsy on the samples. I think the thing that the Sprecher tour has going for it is the soda samples! Mr. Mole and I aren’t really drinkers.

@Mrs. Pony: Thanks! I think that the cheese also comes in little Wisconsin shapes, so I could do a mix and match assortment if we go in that direction.

We haven’t decided on our favors yet, but if I had to pick one for yours…. It would be cow shaped cheese all the way!
