Registries Are Exhausting

December 7th, 2011 @ 7:01 am by Miss Hawk

This weekend we finally ticked off another major task on the to-do list: our registry. I’ll be honest with y’all. Registering was on the bottom of my priority list. I knew it was something that had to be taken care of at some point in time, but I was kind of dreading it. In a lot of ways I was thinking it was going to be a pointless exercise. I mean, Mr. Hawk and I have been living together for over a year now. What could we really need? When we decided to rent a home together, we both brought a good amount of things into our home: pots and pans, plates, silverware…or so I thought. Being little miss type-A, I printed several suggestion lists—Real Simple, Macy’s, and Crate&Barrel—and reviewed them thoroughly. When it came time to take a good solid inventory, I realized that we were definitely lacking. I’m embarrassed to admit that in a lot of ways we’ve been living like college kids (at 26 and 30, no less)!

The majority of our cups (I can’t even call it glassware) are emblazoned with either Green Leafe logos (one of my favorite college bars) or sports logos. We have a collection of mismatched wine glasses we’ve collected at our various wine-tasting outings, and our serving platters are all Tar-jay plastics. I was incredibly surprised that I only was able to eliminate a handful of items from the registry lists! Apparently this registry thing was something we needed more than I originally thought.

With my notated lists in hand, we went to Macy’s. We decided to take care of a lot of big-ticket items there such as our china, silverware, and small appliances. At first I regretted bringing Mr. H when it came to china patterns. He thought china was pointless, yet was somehow very opinionated when it came to decision-making. (Sigh.) In the end we were able to agree on a great pattern.

Then after a Starbucks visit (and venti-sized coffees in hand—did I mention the exhaustion?), we were on to Crate&Barrel. C&B was the place I was most looking forward to after our in-home inventory. I knew that we were in desperate need of everyday items. We found some great glassware (plastic cups, begone!) and grown-up serving platters. One of my favorite items we found was the lightly green-tinted Miguel pitcher and glasses.

Mr. Hawk took charge of the scanner gun (of course), and I actually think that he might have had a good time (besides the whole “I’m missing college football for this” attitude).

We pretty much selected everything we needed to besides a couple items that I wanted to do a bit more research on before choosing a brand and model. The online feature is going to be a lifesaver, especially for price comparisons. I know there’s not a chance in hell I’ll get Mr. H back out there, scanner gun or not.

How was your registry experience? Were you surprised by the amount of items you ended up needing?

We found a lot of things that we ended up thinking “wow, how have we lived without this?!?!” and the china…OH MYYY!!!! My Mr wanted some of the UGLIEST things!! So, we have yet to agree on that part. But overall it was fun, and yes, at first he was a little pouty bc i tore him away from hunting that morning, but in the end, he had a fun time and we picked some pretty neat stuff…. we have 2 more stops to make before its all said and done! :)

Do I need Le Creuset? No.
Do I want it more than anything I’ve ever imagined? YES!

Your china pattern is super pretty. I almost picked that one myself!

We too had been living like college kids, but we did just finish our undergrad degrees. I can’t wait to have matching cups, and serving platters.

Mr. HW was not a fan of the registering process. No amount of beer/food/incentives helped.

I did 90% of our registering online, and then dragged him to the stores once to decide on things I wanted to see/feel in person (mostly things like sheets, towels, linens, etc.) and attempt to get him into the registering spirit. It didn’t work.

:)

Our registry experience was quite hilarious, although we are not done. I really did not want to do this, and wanted to do a honeymoon registry instead, but the family insisted that we do it the traditional way. Either way, the scanning gun ended up shined in my eyes several times. Then, when I was looking at the registry online, he had registered for vampire fangs, a nerf gun and a ninja sword. I kept them on there to see if anyone gets them.

@MeganTacky2247: I’m glad you had a successful experience!

@jacinda10: You DO need Le Creuset (so I can live vicariously through you)!

@Mrs. High Wire: Why can’t they share our love for shopping for fun things like kitchen appliances and sheet sets?? ;)

@arielle: That is too funny! I don’t even want to know what would have been selected if I turned my back on Mr. H!

Ugh. We’re still not done. We went to Macy’s and it was sooo exhausting and really hard to determine what we would actually want/use on their giant list of “must haves.” We’re registering there and at Target, but Target we just did online. Much easier.

Did you do the Crate and Barrel gift registry event?! They are SO fun! Free food, mimosa’s, and beer. People there to answer your questions and give you demonstrations of products! Even if you’ve already registered you should totally go =)

We did Macy’s and Crate and Barrel. Macy’s was a big pain because a lot of the stuff we scanned in the store was not available online or showed up weirdly on the list (a sppon rest, for example). Crate and Barrel was a lot of fun! Most of the stuff that we really want is on that registry.

We actually had a good time registering, but I agree that it was exhausting. We ended up registering for a lot less than what is suggested from websites, we just got tired of scanning things :)

I just did my registries too. We choose Bed Bath and Beyond and Kohl’s. It was exhausting! We actually had a little hiccup during the process. I spent 3 hours at Kohl’s picking stuff out. I scanned everything and returned the gun to the customer service desk. Then when I got home nothing showed up on my registry. They didn’t download the gun properly! I had to go back and re-do everything. At least the second time around it was a lot quicker, but I was not a happy camper…

I was disappointed with the lack of inventory at the Macy’s in my city, so I’ve been doing it mostly online. Although it’s great to read reviews, it takes me way longer to make decisions! I started to complain about it one day, and realized…why am I complaining about making a list of gifts that other people are going to buy me? That has helped me keep things in perspective. :)

We haven’t started yet, but I think we’ve decided to go to Bed Bath & Beyond and Macy’s. Not looking forward to it! We’ve been together for 6 years so you’d think we’d have everything we need, but we too are living like poor college students and I don’t know why!

Macy’s was kind of a pain like Miss Mole said, but we just got $155 gift card in the mail from them. They give you 5% back on all purchases made on your registry or with your Macy’s credit card up through 90 days after your wedding. Pretty sweet deal.

@Roe: I’m with you on the ease of online. I can’t imagine going in person again.

@LionLove: I’ve heard about them but haven’t gone yet. Sounds fun!

@Miss Mole: I agree. I’m really hoping for the C&B items.

@Mrs. Pony: Scanning is fun, but you won’t catch me doing it again anytime soon!

@FutureMrsSMW: Ugh. I cannot imagine having to do it twice!

@bridester: Very good point. No more complaints, here!

@MissCarolyn: Yay! I can’t wait to use them. :)

@TinyTina: I know. I’m still wondering why we’re still relying on all plastic cups!

@tracylesq: Definitely a great perk! We are signed up for the 5%!

Love that last picture of Mr. Hawk…I think I have a very similar photo of Mr. Buck haha. Those boys ;) And good thinking on doing some more research on a few things…I did the same thing.

Registering was no joke. I went about it pretty much the exact same way you did. Doing more research to find the perfect set of pots and pans (I love to cook) and it was like the cherry on top of our registry. That is until we tried to make french toast one night and had to eat it one slice at a time. I then added a large rectangular griddle to the registry, and now we’re done!
Good luck finishing yours. :D
