The Dress Is In…

December 7th, 2011 @ 5:16 am by Miss Elk

And it just barely fits. Why was I even trying on my dress six months before the wedding (besides the obvious answer—because I finally could!)? Well it all started while dress shopping. I don’t know how this happened, but my body is pretty much the perfect size for almost all sample wedding gowns. It was an amazing (and quite unusual) feeling to put dress after dress on and have them fit as if I had already had them altered. When I found my dress, the sample also fit pretty much perfectly. I was pumped and ready to order.

The consultant came in to measure me and informed me that I should order a 12. Ummmmm no. The sample 10 fit me, and I was not going to order a size up just to spend a bajillion dollars altering it down to a 10. So against the advice of the consultant, and with a signature on my contract accepting responsibility if the dress didn’t fit I ordered the 10.

But that was eight months ago, and despite the fact that I promised myself I’d restart Weight Watchers and hire a personal trainer the second I got engaged, I have been pretty much HORRIBLE with regards to healthy eating and exercising, and have probably gained a couple pounds since I ordered the dress. Oh, and I forgot that samples are typically stretched out from being tried on a trillion times a day. So I figured I better go try it on now, hope it fits, and if it doesn’t let this be the point at which I focus on being healthy and losing weight.

And it did fit—mostly. The fact that the consultant was out of breath by the time she closed the clasp at the top of the zipper, and couldn’t actually finish zipping it, coupled with the feeling I got of being stuffed into a sausage casing means I am now fully motivated. I guess I’ve found my motivation.

And now that you stuck with me through all those words, some eye candy of me in MY dress!!! (all personal photos ahead)

Here I am saying “Wow, this is REALLY tight” and my grandma is saying “DON’T TOUCH IT!”

Please excuse the way I am standing. Apparently the second I put on a wedding dress I stand like a doofus. Oh, and I need to put in some cups STAT…there is a severe lacking of cleavage.

I really am flat chested- my boobs and gut form like a straight line here. Once again, I REALLY need some cups. The Dress Is In… : wedding long island wedding dress My2bdr06

My first real back shot! I LOVE the back, but think I might add some false buttons (don’t want to deal with really buttoning it up) and may also lower the back point inch or so.

And finally, just to prove I’m not lying- You can see the little part of zipper that never made it up:

Did anyone else order a size that wasn’t recommended? How did it work for you?

I was in the same boat as you where they told me to order the 12 even though I could fit in the sample 10. I ordered the 12 because I was scared when they told me the sample was stretched out, but I wish I would have just ordered the 10! I could have lost a couple pounds if I needed to get it to fit, and I wouldn’t have needed alterations. Wouldn’t you know it, too, I thought it was still a little big on my wedding day and wished she would have made it tighter. I think you are smart to have gone with the 10 :)

I bet that if you lost around 9-12 pounds, your dress will fit. Also maybe wearing a body countour shaper (like full line spanx) might help.

Sometimes those bridal consultants do know what they’re talking about! The samples do get really stretched out.

You look gorgeous in your dress and you’re a beautiful bride!

You look great though! You can easily lose 10 lbs or so in the time you have left before the wedding just to make it more comfy. I ordered a size down and it was TOO BIG when it came in. It was very strange. I’ve since gained a few lbs though so we’ll see.

I was at a sample sale yesterday and a girl was next to me trying on a dress. The sale had an in-house seamstress hovering about offering her advice to the ladies inquiring about needing possible alterations and what could be doable. The girl’s mom told the seamstress “she plans on losing 10-15 pounds this year”, in other words “the dress WILL fit when she gets married”. I have the same self-enforced goal for myself but it IS hard and 10-15 IS A LOT of weight. I’ve been trying to lose this weight unsuccessfully for the past two years. I’m not overweight, I’m now an 8 but used to be a six- AND I’ve noticed my metabolism has taken a drastic slow down just as I turned 32. I eat extremely well- low fat, low carb, low sodium and run 5 miles, 4x a week. Its just not the same NOW as it was when I was 25. It really is a lot of pressure to put on yourself and for others to put on us, so I hear you sister, loud and clear and can totally relate.

I went against what the consultant said. The 10 was alittle loose- barely but still loose & the 8 was alittle tight. I ordered the 8 because I knew I’d loose weight before my wedding. My dress came in last week and it’s too big- first thing I thought was BOOOYAH consultant! =)

I found a sample that I loved and bought it on the spot. The only problem is that the dress is about 2 or 3 sizes smaller than I am…I have about 5 inches that don’t zip up. I’m not even trying to lose weight to make it fit — I just brought it to a tailor and asked them to add a corset back. Hopefully that will solve the problem!

And I LOVE your dress! The bottom is so pretty — I can just imagine how it will sway and float when you dance!

It looks pretty close to fitting perfectly - it looks very nice. I think once you add the cups and a little while of healthy eating, it’s going to be 100% amazing!

I’m actually very frustrated because the consultant convinced me to order a size up. When the dress arrived a couple weeks ago it’s way too big and I’m sure by the big day I will have lost weight. So yay to lots of alterations!

Your dress looks phenomenal on you! It gives you a beautiful shape!

This makes me nervous! All of my measurements fit one size except my waist, which was almost an inch off. I have also intended on losing a few pounds, but it really hasn’t happened yet… Time to get on it!

I bought a sample that almost fit. And by that I mean that it zipped up but it gave me some back fat spillage and I could barely breathe. But DAMN I looked good in it. Although I have almost never been able to succeed at losing weight (except when I was running 50 mi/week training for a half marathon) I listened to the consultant who assured me that everyone drops 5 lbs or so the week of their wedding because they’re so stressed out. And 5 lbs was really all I needed to lose anyways. Surely I could do it if I did an Insanity workout every morning, and was good about eating (and drinking), right? In the end, despite all of that I succeeded in losing exactly 0 lbs. and when we went to have it altered a couple weeks before the wedding the tailor could barely zip it up :( I was freaked out that it was going to be a huge deal, but do you know what? A dress can be taken out a whole size! I worried for nothing, she added like 1/2″ and it fit AWESOME (actually she added way more than that the first time and then when it was falling off of me asked if I’d been crash dieting, but she ended up just taking it back in except for a tiny bit). So I guess the point of this overly wordy reply is that, although it would be preferable for you to meet your weight loss goals and could be a really good inspiration, if you can fit in the dress now you probably don’t even need a whole size taken out on it and you will be fine weight loss or no.

I ordered up and honestly, it was a mistake. We probably took it in two sizes and could have taken it in another size by the time the wedding rolled around, but I think it was a fluke. You look beautiful in your dress and I’m sure you’re going to look wonderful on the day of the wedding :)

I absolutely love your dress. You look beautiful in it! Do you mind me asking who the designer is? I am currently looking for a similar style dress. Thanks!

My dress just arrived too, yay!
Despite steadily losing weight since April (don’t even know why but I’m not arguing) I went with the consultant’s suggestion and ordered the 12. Yep, it’s too big. I’ve still been losing weight so come alterations time next April we’ll see how much it needs to be taken in. Luckily it’s an easy dress to alter (read: not as expensive).
You look great!
