About Miss Mink

When I first started blogging, I was aware of wedding blogs, but wasn’t too interested in them. The wedding blogs started making their way into my blog reader about a year and a half ago, and I quickly noticed a trend: the wedding mustache.

I did a little research out of curiosity, and it seems as though the wedding mustache started showing up on the blogs in 2008. By 2010, I don’t think a day went by that I didn’t see an image of someone holding a mustache on a stick on one of the wedding blogs. They felt very hip at first…

But like many things hipster, they became adopted by more and more people. They start popping up on more traditional wedding blogs, used by couples who didn’t look too hipster. Was this a full out trend?

I always find myself running in the opposite direction from trends. I have to admit I’ve been a little sad when things Mr. Mink and I thought about having at our wedding became trendy. When I met with a photographer for the first time, I blurted out, “No mustaches!” She must have thought that was an odd request, but she was fine with it.

I have definitely softened a bit to the mustaches over the last year. I created a Pinterest board just for mustache pictures so that I’d be excited to see them. The strategy worked. I’m now delighted when I find a picture to add to my “wedding mustache” collection.

In my blog surfing, I found two different takes on the same theme that I think are really, really cool. The second one is from a wedding that was held in a museum, and it reminds me of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I am not considering doing these myself…I think these couples own these ideas!

I can’t tell you how much I love those last two sets photos. They crack me up! I bet those weddings were a blast!

How do you feel about props in wedding photos? Are you all about the kitsch or do you like more traditional images?

Have you ever worn a mustache at a wedding?

I love the kitschy props, but I think the mustache is a little to overplayed/ hipster for me. Photobooth props in general = awesome and I looove those last few you posted. I think its a fun chance to get goofy and creative, so I’ll be staying away from the mustache and lips. :)

I’ve never seen a mustache in a wedding but then again I haven’t been to that many the past few years. I completely understand about being sad about your ideas being “trendy,” though!! A lot of what I want (because, being as I’m a farmer, they are in my life) are trends right now. Like Mason jars - we own more than we can count because we preserve, so it makes sense to use them and not spend money elsewhere. Also, they do a good job of representing our lives! I’ll just have to embrace the trend, like you are! Thanks for this post! :)

Personally I don’t get formal wear and animal masks, but then my wedding is pretty traditional. No burlap, mason jars or mustaches to be found! Though the antlers I can see many people I know doing, but not in the seemingly ironic way from the picture but because it is a rack they are proud they shot!

@Roe: I agree. I love a little kitch!

@farmergirl: I keep thinking that in a few months, people will move on to other things and what we love will be surprising and interesting again. :)

Since the chances of our guests reading the wedding blogs is low, I bet they’ll find everything charming regardless of what we think is trendy.

@chasesgirl: I think the animal masks are a nod to their venue (a museum) OR possibly to Breakfast at Tiffany’s. :)

I love the antlers! So cute. I try not to consider whether or not something is trendy. If I like it, I go for it (regardless of if 0 other brides or a million other brides are doing the same thing). We aren’t doing any props as of now, but I can see the appeal - we recently went to a wedding with a photobooth with lots of props and all the guests loved it.

@Miss Dalmatian: I have to resist thinking about things being trendy. I know our guests won’t know what the wedding trends are. :)

Sorry, Ms. Mink, but that second photo of the animal masks creeps me right out! The antlers are adorable, though!

@ImDaCat: Hee hee! I think it’s cool and artsy. I realized that some people wouldn’t like it, though.

I think there are still a huge amount of people that have no idea about the mustache thing - my parents thought I was crazy when I made some as props for our photo booth. I don’t know about including mustaches in wedding photos, but I do know that they were a ton of fun to have for the photobooth and definitely help people loosen up a bit (even my 85 year old grandmother took a mustache pic and since there were 3 photos taken in a row by the booth I got two of her with the mustache and one with a very candid laugh about it - in my book, that was priceless).

Definitely not doing the mustache… I don’t think it’s cute! But then again I’m super-traditional and probably won’t do any props other than flowers

I’m all for props for more photobooth style images, but I still want to keep them out of more traditional photos. (The mask photos are too funny, but I could never do something like that!)

I will never understand how the mustache trend is cute or funny or appropriate at a wedding. What does facial hair have to do with getting married? I would have a costume party if i wanted guests to dress up, not a wedding.

@redheadem: I think it’s about being kitchy and irreverent at what is traditionally formal. In a way, that’s what photo booths are all about, right? Encouraging people to have a little fun. :)
