Working On My Fitness

December 7th, 2011 @ 3:23 pm by Miss Doe

You guys, I just discovered the most incredible thing for weight loss. It’s seldom used, but works like a charm.

Oh yeah it’s uhhh, called exercise. I’ve been lying to myself for years thinking all those fad diets work. You name it, I’ve tried it. I even tried that all liquid “Hollywood” diet. Yeah, I nearly passed out on that one.

News flash—none of that works. Maybe it will help you lose a little weight here and there, but nothing that will keep the weight off.

In reality, we all know what the magic spell is…eating healthy and exercising. I always thought I could get away with the former, but in reality I need both. It is not fun, in fact I absolutely loathe exercise. I kept putting it off because I had a really awesome reason why I shouldn’t lose weight.

Are you ready for this? Here it goes:

I already have my dress. What if I lose so much weight that they can’t alter it enough?

I know, I know…horrible excuse. We all know dresses can be taken in. I was just avoiding the hard work that comes with weight loss.

I now have a treadmill in my house, so there are zero excuses. I just need to roll out of bed in the morning and get my tooshie moving. Lately I have been feeling really great and I can tell that I am improving. Running farther, lasting longer…that kind of thing. Yet, I still feel like this sometimes:

Okay are you done laughing hysterically? I know I am not the only one that feels that way. I huff and puff on that treadmill and barely make it sometimes. I am quite certain I look ridiculous the majority of the time. I have to keep in mind though that I am better off today than what I was yesterday. I know that I am making progress, even though it might be slow.

My dress fitting is in approximately three months, which means I need to get serious here. It is time to achieve buns of steel. No more working out when I “feel like it.” Let’s get real, when do I EVER feel like it? I just have to set my routine and stick with it. The last thing I want to do is look back on my wedding pictures twenty years from now and regret not achieving my goal.

Who else has taken up exercise to try and lose some weight for your wedding? How’s it working out for ya? What’s the biggest change you’ve noticed in your body since starting a workout routine?

I have also struggled with getting up in the morning. I am a teacher and coach and often get home very late and don’t want to get up at 5am to run. We hired a personal trainer and after not doing it 2 days last week (although I ran in the afternoon), I got yelled at so bad for it that I’ve actually gotten up every morning since Friday and ran. I hate it but it does wake me up.

*wave* I want to tone up a bit. I’m fine with my size, just not with my shape, if that makes sense. I bought the 30 Day Shred video that everyone on the boards raves about…I just haven’t put it in the DVD player yet. Oops.

I am right there with you! When I got engaged I thought I was going to be so good and really hit the gym, and by this time I would look bangin’….umm flash forward and I still have the 15 pounds I want to lose, with the wedding in 3 months! Eeek! Fittings start beginning of Feb, I think I can at least lose 10 by then :-) Best of luck! We can do this!

I want to lose weight (maybe 10-15 pounds) and (even more so) tone up, but I’m also a little nervous about getting too small for my dress.

I got my butt in gear this past summer, but I do actually enjoy being physically active… once I make it over the lazy hump and get off the couch anyway.

I think a big difference for me was calorie counting. It’s a pain sometimes, but the visual is the most powerful motivator I’ve ever had. I used livestrong’s online tracker, but there are plenty out there, and phone apps as well. Once I saw the calorie numbers of what I was eating I just became so much better about my choices, and when you see how much you’re burning from exercise (or rather… how it’s not really as much as you think!!) it was just an eye opener. I dropped 10lbs in 2 months and never felt wanting. In fact, I felt the best I have in my life! So full of energy.

The hard part is keeping it up in the winter… blah.

I definitely wanted to be more fit and toned before our wedding, but actually getting up and doing the work is always the hardest part for me. My only trick is to put on my workout gear the first thing in the morning since I would feel stupid wearing it around and not working out :)

Boy, can I ever relate to this post! I set a really tough goal for myself - I want to drop 80 pounds by the end of August. I’m way overweight and really, REALLY tired of feeling tired and out of shape and ASHAMED of what I’ve done to my poor body. I was never a skinny minny and never will be but both FI and I have put on 50 pounds each since we met and want to conceive shortly after the wedding so we know we both need to get in better shape. I started my journey on November 1st (three weeks after we got engaged) and I’ve lost 12 pounds so far. I’m really excited because I know that I’m going to reach my goal despite how much hard work it’s going to be. I’m worth the effort and so are you!

Ugh… Exercise. My nememsis. I danced, taught dance and ran marathons(for charity only!) for years. Than all that stopped and I plumped up. Luckily with dietary changes i.e. not going out to dinner and a movie and having a second dinner at the theater, I have lost ten pounds in the last year. I bought Jillian’s 30 Day Shred but have issues being self motivated or making time for it. I am forcing myself to sign up for classes at the Dailey Method. If I pay for it I will definitely attend classes and for me I work better being a little competitive with my neighbor. The Calorie Counter app on my phone helps a ton too. Oh to be 18 with a metabolism to the sky! Six months till the wedding! I need to look AMAZING!

@Miss Mink, 30 Day Shred is def a love/hate relationship. You hate it and swear at Jillian until you’re done, then you’re all excited because you feel like you beat her at her own game.

I just want to tone before the wedding. Do not want flabby arms in my wedding photos. Or the ever dreaded fat back or back cleavage.

I’m not trying to loose weight but I really want to tone up. Especially for the strapless dress! I read a post from another bee who was using the book The New Rules of Lifting for Women and I started it last week. I hope you are able to reach your goals!!

I’ve been exercising and eating healthy for the past year, but it’s more than just for my wedding - it’s for my life and health. I’ve lost 30 lb. so far and hope to lose a total of 150-170 lb. by the time I’m done. To achieve my goals, I joined the local YMCA and have been taking fitness classes (Zumba ftw) in addition to working out on my own. I also echo calorie counting - points, calories, whatever method you can find to track your eating habits and keep yourself in check, do it.

Congrats on your progress!

I bought the Buff Brides book http://www.amazon.com/Buff-Brides-Complete-Getting-Looking/dp/0375758550 and it’s been helpful so far. The exercises are easy enough and the book is divided into a 6month plan (what I’m doing) and a 3 month plan for last minute brides. I’ve really been enjoying it because it’s totally doable. It even tells you how many mins of cardio to aim for each week. My biggest problem is the eating healthy/smaller portions part. I feel very anxious about how I’m going to tone up and shape what I need to by June.

I’m also trying to tone up before the wedding but haven’t been doing very well with my work out routine. I’ve been working late & then christmas shopping after work so I just haven’t made time.

Any bees have any advice on how to get ride of that little pad of fat in my armpits? It drives me nuts!

Ugh. Weight loss. I started attending a bootcamp at a local park a few months ago in addition to running. I was doing so well until the cancelled bootcamp because of the time change. Ever since then I’ve had the hardest time getting motivated!

WOW. Going through this exact same thing. Thought I would have dropped 2 dress sizes by now but all I’ve done so far is add 10 lbs. WTH? So today, I’m off to the gym ’cause I tried on my dress and it’s tighter than when I picked it up last year. No good. First fitting is in April. I need to lose the 10 lbs I gained plus another 10. That would make me happy.

I also started a weight loss journey approximately 6 months ago and have lost 20 pounds. I do feel better, but now the weight is coming off at a slower pace. I joined a crossfit gym (quite hardcore) with my fiance and together we are battling the bulge! I think it helps to have that kind of support. I also bought my dress and am worried what it will look like if I lose as much as I want to… I guess I’ll just have to keep faith in my seemstress and hope for the best :)

Rock on girl! This is a very inspirational post. I would also recommend some upper body strength training… the results show up super fast and make a girl’s arms look slimmer!
