Miss Turkey's Picture
Miss Turkey, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 29, Brand Management Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Consultant Engagement Date: February 2011 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: The Rittenhouse Hotel About Me: I'm a marketer who loves a good glass of wine, anything pumpkin-flavored, every crime drama on TV and, of course, Mr. Turkey. It's funny to say out loud, but we're former coworkers turned betrothed---now planning a wedding in the city of Brotherly Love. For three years, we've been eating our way through Philadelphia, playing tourist at home, and cheering for every sports team in the 215. Although we've hit some unplanned snags along the way, we're determined to have a rocking party this spring with our loud, fun families and friends.
About Miss Turkey

Our Engagement Party

December 8th, 2011 @ 2:07 pm by Miss Turkey

Planning a wedding isn’t easy. Let’s face it, a lot of feelings come out and relationships (and wallets) are strained during this otherwise joyous process. Sometimes this comes from tough relationships between daughters and their mothers.

I can say, now nine months in, that my mom and I are no worse for the wear despite the ups and downs that have come before us. I’m not going deep on you right now, though. Instead, I wanted to talk about how my mom’s excitement and involvement in our wedding planning has brought us closer together. You heard how she helped secure our venue, but coming up next is her best effort yet.

Granted, I am biased, but I wanted to share with you the details of our party as they may serve as great inspiration for any events you may be hosting.

To celebrate our engagement, over Easter, my mom invited family and friends north for a little soiree. I knew she was taking it to the next level when I saw this.

That’s right, my mom made envelope liners!

The invitation included one of our favorite pictures together.

Believe it or not, for the envelope liners,* she followed a tutorial I had put online from a wedding-shower invitation suite. In fact, she said a lot of her inspiration came from online sources. I was very impressed that she could find stuff online by all the details.

Since we had decided on “non-girly” colors, she incorporated purple into the engagement party. (It’s one of my favorite colors.) That’s right, Mr. Turkey would just have to deal. Here are some photos of the event—enjoy!

The Hershey’s kisses had a lot of different sayings on the back—our names, our wedding date, etc.

The “Adults”

Have any of you found your parents “out-crafting” you during the wedding-planning process?

*She also followed my tutorial for water-bottle labels, but unfortunately since they said “Future Mr. and Mrs. Last Name,” I had to blur out a lot!

I don’t think my mother had been inside a Michael’s or AC Moore in her life. She is not a crafter…she’s more of the “let me pay someone to do this thing other people learn to do online.”

She’s creative…just not crafty. :)

Wow, aren’t you lucky to have a mother that would put this much effort into just the engagement party! She’s obviously very excited and loves you very much.

Thats pretty intense for a Mom, wow. Did you show her some of the decor type stuff you liked before too? Or did she venture into online blogs and figure out the trends? :p

Wow! Beautiful! My mom is definitely not this detail oriented… Most of that probably stems from the fact that my parents just adopted from China so things are a bit crazy. My MIL actually threw our engagement garden party and it was beautiful. We ended up having about 80 people there, but it was a great time.

Oh my gosh you’re mom’s awesome! Feel free to lend her skills this way, even I haven’t been able to get water bottle labels just right.

That’s so great! I love the liners she did! I asked my mom to help make invitations and instead she offered to pay to have them ordered. She’s SO not a DIYer!

That’s amazing! Your mom is so crafty! My mom is like some of the moms of some of the above posters. She’d rather pay someone to get the job done!

Your mom threw such an amazing party! Also, your shoes look really cute, and I’d like to see a close up picture so I can get a better look. :)

Thanks for all the props for Mama Turkey!! I think she’s pretty great.

@Miss Mink: I believe in the buy-not-do strategy a lot myself!

@Miss Sunhat: My mom is amazing at sewing too - unfortunately did NOT inherit that.

@jacinda10: She looked up info on blogs, can you believe that? I was impressed.

@knvprincess143: haha - will ask her if she has some free time ;)

@Tayylin: That sounds like a lovely (and large!) engagement party.

@jslb: Feel free to send me a PM on what you’re struggling with - I’ve done them myself and learned a few things along the way…

@Mrs. Parasol: I’ll see if I can find a pic of them up close. They were a Nordstrom *steal* a year or so ago.

I see that your sublime crafting abilities are genetic, haha. My mother is quite crafty, but she hasn’t been able to help out (she’s 600+ miles away).
