So all the bridesmaids had accepted…now what?

I was starting to think about bridesmaids’ dresses, but with all the inspiration and options out there, it was impossible to narrow down. I decided who better to ask for feedback than my bridesmaids themselves!

To get (honest, open) feedback, I decided to prepare an anonymous questionnaire via Survey Monkey. Judge away, but Survey Monkey was an amazing resource to me during business school—to choose team leads for projects, resolve team issues, and, most importantly, collect data.

My goal was simple: see if there was any sort of consensus on color or style for the bridal-party attire (dress, shoes, accessories). Let’s face it, it’s rare for a bridesmaid to rewear a dress, no matter how thoughtful or stylish a bride is. By asking these women, my hope was that this was a step in the right direction in minimizing the chances of simply contributing a dress hanger to their spare closet.

So, here are the details of the survey. (If you’re nice and read to the end, you can even see the results.)

1. The colors for the wedding are navy and green (closer to a kelly green…a little darker), so the bridesmaids’ dresses would be in one of those two colors.

So, what would be your preference for a dress color?

  • Navy
  • Green
  • Navy with a green sash/embellishment
  • No preference
  • I really like burnt orange better

2. I don’t want to dictate a dress for anyone, so here are a few options of how it could work…please rank your preference. (1 = most preferred, 4 = least preferred)

  • Pick my own dress style (color would be given, multiple styles to pick from)
  • Pick my own color (same style for all, would be able to choose green or navy)
  • Pick my own color AND style (either navy or green, multiple styles to pick from)
  • I want to just wear something out of my closet

3. What do you think seems like a reasonable dollar range for a bridesmaids’ dress?

  • $100–150
  • $150–200
  • $200–250
  • Money is no object—I’m rollin’ in the Benjamins

4. Let’s all say it together: “Dyed shoes are ugly and NEVER get worn again.” I say this as someone who has several pairs of dyed prom shoes in her closet. If anyone wants some navy blue satin pumps with straps, just let me know.

That being said, what is your preference on shoes? (rank from 1–5, 1 = most preferred)

  • Pick my own shoes (any style, silver)
  • Pick my own shoes (any style, gold)
  • Pick my own shoes (any style, alternate color)
  • I’m OK with buying specific shoes for the wedding
  • I’d like to go barefoot, thanks

5. You all know I wear the exact same jewelry every day—what are your thoughts on accessories for the wedding? Check all that apply.

  • Please don’t let me wear pearls
  • I love pearls
  • I’d like to pick my own accessories
  • Let’s do a fun accessory shopping trip!

6. Any other thoughts/comments? Things you’d like to be involved in (cake tasting, floral/centerpiece design, bar tasting, etc.)? Advice on how not to be a bridezilla (if you don’t already think this is kind of making me one)?

There you have it, the six-question survey for the bridal party. As for the results, here are the highlights:

  • They had no preference on dress color.
  • They wanted to pick their own dress style (color given).
  • They wanted the cost to be somewhere between $150 and $250 (skewed to under $200).
  • They were OK with buying specific shoes for the wedding, but if they had a choice, they liked wearing silver shoes of their choosing.
  • The idea of a fun accessory shopping trip was well received.

Now that you all know the results, when you see the bridal-party attire, you can judge whether I stayed true to their requests.

Did you ask your bridal party for feedback when making decisions?

I love this idea, even though half my girls would have answered in the most smart assed way possible and half would (maybe) take it seriously.

@Mrs. Pony: Lol my people would too!

But if you’re this organized and type-A, Miss Turkey (which I think you are based on your posts!) - then all the more power to ya! Cant wait to see the attire.

That’s awesome! And of course, my first inclination for the first question was “burnt orange.” Texas Longhorn through and through :D

This is a pretty interesting idea. My girls are all so opinionated though, I barely had to ask before they told me. I wanted mis-matched dresses, but they wanted to wear the same one. When we went dress shopping, they picked out their dresses, I just vetoed any I really hated, and ok’d the one they picked. They made that part of my job easy!
@futureMFG: I also love burnt orange, but I’m from Chicago.

I am SO stealing this idea! I asked all of my girls in a closed facebook group I had created just for us, maybe I’ll get more honest feedback this way :-)

I got pretty lucky - my bm’s are all business school grads/ engineers - they started a spreadsheet going on all sorts of attire options. Everyone had the option to comment on what other ones suggested and eventually they came to a “organized” consensus. I also got to veto, but was pretty happy with everything they picked.

I had a Bridesmaids luncheon and we went on a shopping trip where they picked out their own dresses, it worked out where they all fell in love with the same dress style and they actually had all three sizes at the store! I bought them for them as their gifts for being my bridesmaids, they are on their own for shoes though lol they came up with the idea of ballerina slippers which is pretty cool in my personal opinion! The dresses are exactly what I hoped they would be, that little black dress that every woman needs in their closet =)

@Mrs. Pony: I figured I pre-empted the sarcastic remarks with some of the choices :) and they had plenty of room in the comments to add anything they wanted hah!

@jacinda10: Me?!?! Type A?!? Never. ;)

@Mrs.Ebers: Blue jeans…that could be a new trend!

@futureMFG: Love the Longhorn color. I put that on there as an option because several of my bridesmaids, due to their coloring, can NOT wear orange. :)

@Miss Kettle: So funny that they picked the same when they had options.

@Miss Godiva: I’m a HUGE fan of the anonymous survey - I think it was especially helpful on the price piece.

@kanadia82: Wow - lucky you for having such an organized (and high-achieving) bridal party! I definitely “blame” my MBA for my love of spreadsheets and survey tools :)

@sonja.c1984: So nice of you! I think the ballerina slippers sound lovely and unique.
