About Miss Porcupine

Over it!

December 9th, 2011 @ 12:15 pm by Miss Porcupine

To be blunt, I’ve gotten to a place in wedding planning where I just don’t give a hunk of doo anymore. Just me? At this point we’ve been engaged for almost a year and a half. I’ve been steadily planning since about day 3 of our engagement. I have all my vendors booked, the menu picked, my first dress fitting scheduled, and a pretty good grasp on what detail items need to be accomplished. (Damn you chalkboard frames!) The issue now is that I can’t get anything done. AT.ALL. I mean to do something, but then I can’t quite figure out what it is I should be doing, and I take to my couch and DVR.

I could sit here and wax poetic about the joys of wedding planning, the fun I’m having, the lollipops that fall from the sky every time I accomplish a wedding task, but um - no. I’m seriously over it. I want to create a bonfire of all my damn wedding magazines that have the same advertisements and the same articles in EVERY.SINGLE.ISSUE. I want to fling my wedding binder that I long ago neglected out the window at full force. I want to eat brownies and cheeseburgers (whoops, I’ve been doing quite a bit of that) instead of trying to focus on keeping the lbs off so that I can zip up my gown.

What have I done in the last month? I’ve ordered 10 invitations from Vistaprint. That’s all folks. I suck.

Before we order a slew of 100 invitations, response cards, and the like, Mr. P and I decided to make sure we like the design in-person. The smallest amount you can order on Vistaprint is ten, so I randomly stumbled upon a Vistaprint sale and ordered ten invitations for five bucks. With tax and shipping it came to be 16 dollars. I figure 16 dollars isn’t much to lose if we get them and dislike them. A lot better than ordering 100 and regretting it.

So, yea. I have 10 invitations en route to gaze at and then hopefully order another 100 of. Then what? How do I make myself care about things like the guest book, the bridesmaid accessories, and what the place cards should look like?

How did you navigate the lat few months of your engagement? Where did you find the inspiration to get into the swing of finishing up the details?

I am getting married on December 29th. I went through the exact same thing. My inspiration came once we hit about 45 days and I started freaking out :)

At least you have most things done! I’m in the same boat as you, except I have infinity things left to do. I can’t get motivated to do any of the boring stuff anymore, like booking the damn limo. Bo-RING.

A Practical Wedding (http://apracticalwedding.com/) has helped me keep things in perspective. Nobody needs favors. We’ll be just as married with plain, inexpensive invitations as we would with a fancy invitation suite that comes in a box with diamonds.

The end goal is to spend the rest of your life with the person you love most in this world. All the little stuff doesn’t matter. In 20 years, nobody’s going to remember what your invitation looked like or what chairs they sat on at your reception. What they will remember is how they cried at the ceremony, and how in love you two looked during your first dance.

I’m with you! I feel like I have all the big things done, and a list of about a bajillion tiny little things left to do! How do I find the motivation and time to do them all?

I hear ya. I am definitely not going to be one of those brides who quits her job to start a wedding planning company. ;)

There were definitely months where I did very, very little in terms of wedding planning. After planning for so long I started to feel burned out before getting to the big day and then finishing up a whole bunch of things 3 weeks before the wedding (seriously). As long as you’re doing something, you’re good :)

Oh, I so feel you, Miss P! And I felt this way even before I started planning. That wasn’t a great place to be. But when you’re having the best time at your wedding, you’ll be thankful you stuck it out, even though planning totally sucks some of the time.

I understand. I just started a new job and between that and the holidays it seems like so much is going on that the wedding has had to be on the back burner. I do still love wedding planning (what can I say, I’m crazy), it just hasn’t been on my mind 24/7 anymore. I think it’s totally natural to go up and down with this. I’m sure you will have another wave of excitement once it gets really close!

Keep things in perspective. Does having bridesmaids with matching jewelry matter? Probably not. If it needs to get done (which it sounds like you’ve pretty much gotten covered), do it. Otherwise, coast a little. Nothing bad is going to happen if you do.

Ooh I feel yoour pain! I was in the same place about a month ago. I didn’t want to think about anything wedding related. I came out of my funk and you will too! I just mailed my invites and you’ll get to that point too.
But there is a silver lining. Take this anti-wedding time and focus on other non-wedding things you didn’t even think about last month. You’ll be glad for it when you’re back on the bandwagon. :)

I’m not even that close to the wedding yet and I’m already over it. I’m blaming it on the long engagement. So ready to just be married!

Totally normal, I go through very different waves of avoiding the planning to knocking things off the list quicker than I can put something new on. Take the break, it’s well deserved!

I hear you!! I just wrote a very similar post - I’m in this rut where I definitely COULD have things to do, but.. tv and wine just sound SO much more appealing. From what I hear, you’ll get back into it and you’ll be like a little wedding machiiiine leading up to the big day.. here’s hoping for the both of us!

@DaylaJanea: I just noticed I am 100something left and the freak out has begun!!
@Miss Unicycle: The boring things have seriously stopped me as well from being productive.
@oatmealpie: This is so true! I try to keep it in perspective. I also try to get the magical fairies to do all the little things that no one will remember. ;)
@coasterkim: I hate the tiny bajillion things! Gah!
@Miss Mole: Haha, definitely not on my list of career goals.
@Mrs. Pony: I am so going to be like you with the three weeks to go. I think I work better under pressure…
@Mrs. Parasol: Ah, yes. My fellow wanted to elope Bee. I know what you mean. =) Blah, can’t wait to just be AT the wedding.
@Miss Dalmatian: This also reminded me I better get a move-on with some holiday stuff. ;P
@brittaful: You’re right. I am totally trying to go with the flow of coasting. It’ll probably work until after New Year’s.
@Miss Kettle: Ahh, I hope I get out of my wedding funk like you did soon!
@TinyTina: Totally. Long engagements wear you out. But, at the same time, I think the stress of a short engagement would have stressed me out. Can’t win!
@Miss Honey: Good to hear. Although, I feel like I take many breaks, ha, oops.
@Miss Hawk: I think we need to spend a good 2 hrs on Pininterest. ;)
@Miss Fox: Ah, yes and the wine. Definitely not helping me either, haha.
