Miss Turkey's Picture
Miss Turkey, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 29, Brand Management Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Consultant Engagement Date: February 2011 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: The Rittenhouse Hotel About Me: I'm a marketer who loves a good glass of wine, anything pumpkin-flavored, every crime drama on TV and, of course, Mr. Turkey. It's funny to say out loud, but we're former coworkers turned betrothed---now planning a wedding in the city of Brotherly Love. For three years, we've been eating our way through Philadelphia, playing tourist at home, and cheering for every sports team in the 215. Although we've hit some unplanned snags along the way, we're determined to have a rocking party this spring with our loud, fun families and friends.
About Miss Turkey

I’m saving you all reader space here by consolidating the dress searches that didn’t result in purchase into a single post. You’re welcome.

I had NO idea what kind of wedding dress I wanted. None. OK—that’s a lie. I knew I wanted it to be white. But in terms of silhouette…no clue.

Since my mom was in town a couple weeks after our engagement (and we had the venue and band locked in), we decided to go try on some dresses. I thought it was absolutely crazy to try on dresses that soon, but we made a strict “no purchase” rule.

Part I

We decided to visit Bridals by Danielle in the Washington Square section of Philadelphia on a Saturday afternoon. The store.was.hopping. Although there was only one bride trying on gowns in the main area, it’s not that big of a space, so with her seven onlookers, it felt a little crowded. However, they were not lacking for dresses. Apologies in advance—no photos were allowed.

Our consultant was running a little behind, so we had a chance to browse through the gowns. Maybe I’m just oblivious, but I was overwhelmed by the variety. Different styles, fabrics, colors of white (yes, I realize some of them may just have been dirty—not that naive!)…it was a lot. We picked out a few gowns we thought might be good to try on, mixing styles and fabrics and varying degrees of “bling.” Again, this trip was not to purchase, but hopefully we could narrow down style.

We were paired with Cynthia. When we told her our situation, she became even more helpful, if that was possible. Instead of trying to push us to purchase, she asked questions about the type of wedding, what dresses I feel most comfortable in, etc. I ended up actually trying on a lot of Lazaro dresses and finding that ballgown was the style I was looking for. I’ll save you the individual stories, but several styles were immediately nixed due to the fact that they made me look crazy tall—I’m almost 5’10″, so don’t need help there. Believe it or not, I also walked away with a dress that I thought could be a real frontrunner (this one) with some minor adjustments, so, overall, an extremely successful trip. Thank you, Cynthia!

Part II

Over Easter, I headed back home to upstate New York and, since we had some free time, decided to visit Lily of Saratoga to look at some dresses.

I kept mostly to ballgowns, but did try on a few different styles (including an all-lace dress—gorgeous, but not in keeping with my vision for the wedding). Believe it or not, I walked away with another favorite dress, but one that was completely different. I liked it so much, I put on a veil.

Personal photo—I am wearing this dress.

In person, this dress seemed perfect. First, it was extremely comfortable. Next, it was a classic style, but with a modern twist because of the small flowers and pickups. It was dramatic without being too dramatic.

However, we realized the problem when we got home…its drama, beauty, and detail did not translate in the photographs.

You can’t see all the flower detail in the skirt.

I realize we were using a point and shoot and not a professional camera, but it took this dress out of the running. Sad face.

We did have some luck in terms of bridesmaids’-dress inspiration during this visit, though. More on that later.

Part III

Later in the spring, my mom made another trip to Philadelphia, and we decided to head out to the ’burbs and check out Priscilla of Boston (RIP).

Although I enjoyed my experience at Priscilla and really liked my consultant, it felt as though the dresses were a bit pricey, especially when compared to other dresses I had seen. We went back into to the dressing room with only a few gowns, including one rogue which I was not a fan of on the hanger.

Oops.

It ended up being my favorite dress of the day and, ultimately, the dress I ended up comparing to the Lazaro from Part I. Apparently these consultant people know more than you do.

I look A LOT happier than the model of this dress. (Why the long face?)

This dress was a bit “funky,” you could say, but with the classic silhouette I felt like it wouldn’t be something I’d look back at later and question (like my father’s aforementioned baby blue tux). After the photography issue with the Augusta Jones, I was SO happy to see that the painted-lace detail came through. Unlike the Lazaro, I didn’t want to make any adjustments to this dress.

Again, the veil went on to check out how it felt to “be a bride.”

This would be such a cool photo if it weren’t for the clips.

It felt pretty good.

I walked away from Priscilla empty handed, feeling like I had two (very different) dresses on my short list. But how to narrow it down? The yellow legal pad was seeming fairly necessary to go through pros and cons…

Did you have success in your early wedding-dress searches?

My post about my first trip is coming up on Monday. The reason for the trip was interesting and I knew I wouldn’t like anything in the shop.

I had three awesome visits and one other not-so-awesome one (also at POB, which has changed a lot since I first visited one with a friend 12 years ago).

This is making me excited to write about my search!

BTW, the Lazaro is gorgeous!

I’m also finding the search challenging. I have two dresses at the top of my list, and have been listing the pros and cons of each for a week now to the extent of even picturing out various color schemes to go with each dress. (One is light gold and the other is white.) It’s really hard to narrow down. Each dress has different features that I prefer.

Although I feel the pressure to get this one decision over with, I’m trying to relax. My wedding is in 9 months and I still have plenty of time. Both these dresses will still be there whenever I am ready to decide.

My big question is whether or not I am ready to stop searching for something better. My sister and mom say that I am “white washing” myself and overwhelming myself more than I need to, and it’s not like I have a lot of extra free time to go try on all these dresses. Heck, I am not even sure I really enjoy trying on dresses that much. However, I think with every search, I am refining what I want. Further, I am hopeful that maybe I can still find the absolute perfect dress where every detail is a preferred one from the price to the fit to the placement of the lace.

I share because wedding dress shopping is turning into way more a process than I ever expected it to be. My sister points out that I have spent more time looking at dresses than researching the new car I just purchased. I believe that for me, this decision is that much more personal and complicated though. Since there’s no rush, what do I got to lose, right? Is anyone else going through this sort of analytical process? How are you or how did you working/work through it?

They’re both so pretty, but so different! I can’t wait to see your final choice!

I LOVE the second gown! It has such great and unique detail. When I try on clotched before going out and ask my fiance`s opinion, he always ends up saying ” (blank) one; because you looked happier in it!” haha-I know that’s not ultimately how you should pick out your wedding gown (because none of us love the shots of ourselves in the dress store lights). They are all very pretty and ‘fit’ your princess dress you wanted, but you look thrilled to be wearing the Priscilla dress. If you are willing to be a little more fashion forward than the average bride, I say go with the last one! ….but that’s just my opinion haha :) good luck on your final choice and best wishes with the rest of the wedding planning!

**When I say second in the first sentence, i’m referring to the Priscilla dress; the second one you are seen wearing

Oh, I really wish you had a picture of you in the Lazaro! It looks amazing, and I think it’s my favorite of the three you listed here. Though, as a POB bride, I never met a POB dress I didn’t like. ;) Needless to say, I was heartbroken when I heard they were closing up shop, though exceedingly thankful I was lucky enough to be one of the last POB brides.

Luckily, I found my dress the first day we went shopping. Neither my mother nor I have a lot of patience for spending a lot of time on just one task. At our second store, I fell in love.
I love the way you look in that dress at Priscilla. I love organza, ball gowns, and sweetheart necklines. Going purely by my own preferences (and also how amazing you look!), I’d say go with that one.

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. More to come on the dress search…

@Miss Mink: Can’t wait to read about your search - intrigued!

@Succulent: It is definitely hard and quite a process. I think my best advice, from what I went through (and what I’ve heard from others) is to stop looking once you’ve made a decision. If the dress is right for you, everything will fall into place! They’ll always be something new, but what you pick will be perfect.

@Mrs. Parasol: It is very sad to see POB go - so many fantastic options.

@Miss Kettle: You’re one of the lucky ones!

Numero uno: I used to live across the street from Brides by Danielle when they were still located on 13th Street and I remember swooning over the dresses daily - I had such dress lust!! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it back when I was ready to try on wedding dresses, so I totally just lived vicariously through you for a minute. ;)
As for the dress hunt - I had an exact image of what I wanted my dress to be, and ended up finding a dress I really liked at every place I went. Go figure that the one I picked is NOTHING like what I originally thought I wanted!

@Miss Fox: Ah - what a great area of the city! And isn’t it funny when you think you have a plan or a vision in mind…and the opposite is what you choose? (dress, flowers, etc) LOVE your dress, though, can’t imagine another one for you.
