Honeymoon, Check!

December 12th, 2011 @ 10:01 am by Mrs. Mole

It’s hard to shop for swimsuits in December. A lot of retailers, online or otherwise, are still stocking heavy Fair Isle sweaters and fleece-lined jeans instead of bikinis and cover-ups. When I do find suits for sale, I also find that my blinding white skin tends to distract me from the cuteness of the pattern or style.

I did, however, have some luck finding a very important swim suit accessory on Amazon. I even picked up an extra one for Mr. Mole.

His and hers snorkeling kits

These kits are going to come in handy in February when we go on our honeymoon to… Playa del Carmen and Cozumel! The poll that I posted ended up being split 50-50 between Europe and Mexico. (Thanks for all of your votes and comments, hive!) We ended up deciding to go to Mexico now and to save Europe for our first anniversary.

We are going to be spending the first four nights of our honeymoon at Secrets Maroma Beach, an all-inclusive resort that is quite popular with the honeymooning crowd. For example, Mrs. Cheeseburger, chickybarr, and arizonabride all stayed there! According to TripAdvisor, Secrets Maroma Beach is the #2 recommended hotel in Playa del Carmen.

From the photos, I can’t say that I am surprised. The resort looks wonderful.

Mr. Mole and I plan on spending all four days at Secrets Maroma Beach laying by the water, reading books, and drinking non-alcoholic Mango Tangos and Strawberry Daiquiris. We might even arrange to do a half-day snorkeling trip, if we can peel ourselves off the lounge chairs.

The best thing about our stay at Secrets Maroma Beach? It’s free. Remember when I mentioned that our original resort for our soon-to-be-engagement trip was oversold and we got bumped to Zoetry? That original resort was Secrets Maroma Beach. As compensation for being bumped, the resort gave us a free four-night stay to be used anytime within a year of the original booking. What better time to cash it in than on our honeymoon?

(I know that this was information that probably would have been useful for the poll! It’s like on House Hunters when the buyers make the worst choice and only tell you three months later that they added on a third floor to the previously tiny house or negotiated the high purchase price down by 20%. But we weren’t sure if the right dates would be available for our voucher, so we weren’t counting on this freebie.)

With some bonus money in our pockets, we decided to extend our trip and spend another three nights in Cozumel at the Presidente Intercontinental. It’s not an all-inclusive hotel, so we will get the opportunity to go into town and experience some local restaurants. We picked this hotel because of the amazing opportunity for snorkeling! We can just wade in with our equipment and swim to the coral reefs.

In the end, Mr. Mole and I planned our honeymoon together, although I know that tradition says that the groom should be responsible for the trip. Did you plan your honeymoon together, or did one of you take charge in the planning?

Looks gorgeous! BTW, 6pm.com has great deals on swimsuits, even more so now that we’re in the off months.

STAY AT SECRETS LONGER!!! Having been there in August for my own honeymoon, I can tell you 4 days is not long enough. It is amazing… we had 8 nights, and extended our stay while we were there. One evening, we took the bus trip into Playa, and came back via cab on our own, so we were still able to enjoy/experience restaurants, shopping outside the resort. It seriously is the best place in the world. Just wait til you pull up to the resort and get out of the cab… take a deep deep breath! Def eat at the French restaurant - we thought it was the best. And, even though it is not on special, they will always serve you fillet with lobster tail. It’s only on special once a week, but they will always make it for you.

The snorkeling is a great trip, via Mayan Adventures. We did 2 trips, one that was all snorkeling, and one that was a trip to Tulum, snorkeling and zip lining. I suggest the one that includes the trip to Tulum. The snorkeling only got a little boring after awhile.

As you can see, I LOVED my honeymoon, and am so excited for you to enjoy yours!!!

That looks lovely! I’m letting my fiance plan it… which means there is a distinct possibility it won’t even happen!

@All In: Thanks for the tip! Now I just need to stay away from all of the shoes on that site. ;)
@km: Wow, great advice! We’ll have to check out that company for day-trips. I wish we could just stay for longer, but we knew that we wanted to get some non-AI time in as well.
@Kelly: Same to you! I keep stalking TripAdvisor reviews so I can daydream about the vacation.
@rusticgirl: I would be dropping some pretty heavy hints to Mr. Mole if that was our situation. As in, leaving the browser open to the resort website with a post-it note saying “LOOKS AWESOME!” on it. Haha.

Blech tradition. So outdated. I think that is great you planned your honeymoon together, we did the same thing! In our situation, it made much more sense than just the groom planning. Plus, i’m a control freak..I wouldn’t be able to handle that haha. You are going to have an amazing honeymoon, everything looks incredible!

I, literally, had no idea that the groom was supposed to plan the honeymoon. But I did read that the idea of a honeymoon comes from a tradition where newlyweds would drink honey mead for a full moon after their wedding. Not sure how true that is considering I read it on the back of a bottle of honey mead and I imagine they have a certain amount of interest in this story. Anyways I’m glad that Miss Mole was involved in the planning. Otherwise my Plan B would be staying home & watching a Werner Herzog movie marathon. - Mr. Mole

I would love to be warm on a sunny beach sipping one of those tasty drinks. Or snorkeling (which I’ve never done). It’s so great that y’all got a honeymoon fo free and get to tack on another trip. And I’m also blindingly pale. I srsly reflect sunlight.

Looks gorgeous! And, I had to laugh at the bathing suit comment. I recently ordered a few for a destination wedding in Dec. that I thought they were so cute until I paired them with my glowing white skin. lol.

@Miss Doe: Thanks! I am happy we planned this together; the planning was really fun!
@jeffexpress: Haha oh no.
@Future Army Wife: Snorkeling is so much fun! You should definitely try it sometime. We got hooked after our first try.
@Miss Porcupine: Haha. Bathing suit shopping is such a pain in all seasons.m

Part of me wants to plan, another part of me wants to be surprised. Originally, I told Mr. Mink that I just wanted there to be a beach and dolphins. We’ll see what happens!

That hotel by the reef looks incredible! I can’t wait to see your pictures!

At first I asked Mr. Hawk to take charge of the plans, but he’d prefer my input. So now we’re planning together.

@Miss Mink: I think anywhere with both a beach and dolphins will be pretty amazing!
@Miss Hawk: I am glad that we are planning together, per the comment from jeffexpress (Mr. Mole) above. Haha.
