Retro-Wedding Inspiration

December 12th, 2011 @ 5:16 am by Miss Unicycle

I like to think that our wedding will be “retro inspired.” I don’t mean vintage, the most often overused/misused adjective in the wedding lexicon. I mean retro. When I think of “vintage,” I think of faded photographs, artfully aged furniture, and whimsical wild flowers in milk glass. When I think of “retro,” I think of beehive hairdos, polka dot shoes, red lipstick, and poufy skirts. I’m not sure what era I actually like. Believe me when I say history was my worst subject ever—I’d literally rather retake calculus, physics, philosophy, and even P.E. than ever take another history class. So I’m not sure if I like the ’50s or the ’60s, or some combination of the two. I’m not talking poodle skirts or flower power. Maybe mid-century is a good descriptor. Mad Men, Dior’s New Look, and rockabilly/pin-up styles all intrigue me. Again, I’m not sure if those all took place at the same general time or not. I’m more concerned with applying them to our very 2012 wedding. Instead of jabbering on, for once I’ll just show you a bunch of fun pictures.

Sigh. If money/Mr. Unicycle’s opinion/my questionable history skills weren’t an issue, I would do a full-blown retro theme. I can’t wait to pull some of these ideas into our wedding, but I think I’ll save the themes for more dedicated brides like the Nightmare Before Christmas bride!

If you had to pick between “retro” and “vintage” (according to my definitions!), which would you choose? Did/does your wedding have a theme?

I like vintage more personally but I TOTALLY get your classifications of both and agree 100 percent.

Wow, these are some gorgeous photos!! I’m not organized enough to have a coherent theme… We’re lucky I’ve even got a (debatable) color scheme going on!

Thank you for making a clear delineation between “retro’ and vintage”
(for the record, you seem to be leaning towards 50s and early-mid 60s, mid-century would be an awesome descriptor, new look was very 50s and Mad Men is 60s)

And the Gwen Stefani hair was broken down here:

Vintage theme just screams hipster (at least, what hipster manifests as here) to me, so I would say retro, but we were more “swing era” ish with our wedding. My one dress was much more early 50s, my other was 30s and we had music mostly from the late 30s-40s. The table names spanned from early 30s, to one lone dancers who started in the 80s/early 90s and is still going strong now.

Your pictures are so cute! I’ve been a bit of a history buff my entire life, and our wedding is definitely reflecting that. I guess it would be a third option, antique, haha. I’m inspired by things that are about 70-100 years old.

I abhor a wedding theme (for myself… other people, get your theme on!) I think it’s from too many theme parties in my sorority days (Toga Parties! Pimps & Hos! ’80s Night!)

But I love LOVE vintage/retro aesthetics in general. My beloved and I are both huge fans of mid-century modern architecture/design. In fact we’re spending our honeymoon in Palm Springs for a Midcentury design festival. So it’s pretty natural that some retro design elements would creep in.

The biggest is my dress, which my mother and I made from a 1957 Vogue Vintage pattern (V2962 if anyone is interested).

But there’s a touch of a retro feel to our stationery (invitations & programs), to our brunch menu, lot’s of things.

Ugh tough question. I loooove all your retro inspiration pictures.. they’re just SO fun. I keep thinking I like vintage.. but not really. It has to be a certain kind of vintage. Like, 20’s flapper vintage? Although that may be an oxymoron!

LOL about the skinny pants. Man, Miss U you are going to have an awesome retro style wedding! I’m sure it will reflect tons of bits of you and your passions, along with Mr. U’s. :)

I love the invitation suite you posted - I have that bookmarked too! I don’t think it will work for us since we are leaning more towards your description of vintage (the wildflowers part, not the faded photos part), but they are so adorable!

I love both! They all confuse me, but I know that I love any and all haha :) Great pictures!

We are doing a vintagesqueish (that’s a word now, btw ;D) theme, if you want to call it that.

Trying very hard to keep everything subtle but it will include wildflowers, family heirloom linens, vintage silverware, mis-matched china, Big Band era music for our social hour and decor from my Papa’s attic- yep-yep!

We want to capture the nostalgia of the time but I’m not so tied into a theme that I am refusing to be flexible when good deals come up! I am having so much fun with this!!

I love vintage for weddings, but sometimes wish I could just move somewhere where my whole life could go retro. It’d be so glam.

I think I’d go with vintage because that can mean so many things!
