My wiener dog with an attitude problem and lazy basset hound are my constant source of entertainment. He's a hunter and I like cooking so it's not rare to see wild game on our dinner menu. Both of us were born and raised in a small historic farming town where our feet are still firmly planted. We have been together for nearly a decade and have shared many life experiences together, including birthdays that are only one day apart. We are two old souls that are creating our long-awaited wedding with loads of tradition that blends our two styles into rustic elegance in the foothills of Northern California.

The Piggy Bank

December 12th, 2011 @ 10:54 am by Miss Doe

I know I mentioned here that my first wedding purchase was shoes. Technically that is not true. It was my first big purchase, but truth be told my first purchase for the wedding was actually a piggy bank.

Yes, a piggy bank. Two days after our engagement I was at the Hallmark store and I found this:

You know that phase you go through soon after your engagement where you buy ANYTHING that might say “wedding,” “bride,” or “groom” on it? Yeah, I was definitely in that phase. I bought everything. (Because apparently I really needed that Bride key chain? I know. Lame.)

However, this wedding fund piggy bank came in handy recently. For almost a year now I have been randomly dropping change in it when I think of it. I wasn’t very consistent, so it took a while to fill it up. This past weekend I realized it was probably time to head on over to the Coinstar machine at the grocery store and cash it in.

Mr. Buck and I took bets on how much we thought was in the jar. His guess was $7, mine was $13.

We were both wrong. This is how much it came out to:

For those of you who are math challenged like I am and don’t want to count, that would be $34.43. Not bad, right?

My thinking is that “wedding fund” money can only be used towards wedding things. I don’t want to just waste it on any ol’ thing. I know some of you are wondering what on earth I could buy for the wedding with such little money. While it may not be a large amount of money, it’s still more money in my pocket than what I had yesterday. I am determined to find something for the wedding that I can buy with that money.

Have any of you found a creative way to save money for your wedding?

Great idea!! We have a jar that we put money into too. We are going to bring it all on the honeymoon.

You can buy stamps! Not sure how many invites/thank you notes you have to send out, but $34 would buy a lot of stamps. Plus, you can get the fun wedding or love themed stamps to satisfy your “spend for the wedding” rule.

My fiance and I are doing the same thing! We’ve bought our cake topper, adress labels, envelope seals and decorative paper with change. We had a bunch in a jar before getting engaged too, but now our change-saving has a purpose!

Doesn’t Coinstar charge you to count change? We just take ours to the bank and get cash there.

Haha, I love that little piggy bank! I have a ton of extra change laying around… I should add it up and see what it can get us!

I had an old glass wine jug that I used to drop change in…I had kept it going for about 5 years or so (it was a big jug). After getting engaged, I cashed it in before going dress shopping and had a few hundred dollars - enough to pay for half of the cost of my dress!

Now that I’m married and don’t have to pay for wedding expenses anymore, I have two small change jars to feed my other two obsessions: ‘coffee fund’ and ’shoe fund’!!

Mr. BC and I always make bets on how much we think is in our change jar when we cash it in once a year - we are never even close!

Besides just socking away more money into savings, I started using coupons at the store. My mother used coupons when I was little and I guess the Extreme Coupon show got me to pay attention them again. I don’t buy things just because of a coupon (because so much of what has coupon is processed or junk food), but I use them on healthy foods to just lessen our grocery bills a little bit. :)

I am always super-surprised how much money adds up when I take my change in! I need to check my piggy bank…

At the end of each month I usually sweep whatever’s left in my daily checking account into savings. Now I’m sweeping it into an account designated for wedding expenses, and the Mr. puts in an amount equal to our house-sharing expenses (me 40%, him 60%).

(At the beginning of the month, when my paycheck hits, I have automatic transactions that split it up and deposit parts of it into joint checking, savings, daily checking, etc., so I’m not shorting my savings of normal deposits!)
