Miss Porcupine's Picture
Miss Porcupine, NYC/Lancaster, PA Age and Occupation: 26, Sales Coordinator/Publishing Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Assistant Manager/Sales Engagement Date: August 8, 2010 Wedding Date: March 2012 Venue: Riverdale Manor About Me: I'm a born and bred New Yorker with a love/hate relationship for the city I have always called home. Although I may seem quiet from afar, I have a loud personality once you get to know me. I am a book nerd at heart, but love a night out in the city with good friends. I have a serious addiction to all things cheese, chocolate, cardigans, Mexican food, and reality TV. The future hubs and I met in college, settled in New York, and decided to go with a rustic/peacock infused wedding in Lancaster, PA, right near his hometown. Come the big day, we will be together 5 years, and we're looking forward to making it official!
About Miss Porcupine

Today I signed into my registry to replace something that went discontinued (no worries—I’ve only had to do this 80 times already) and my jaw almost hit the floor when I noticed we are ALMOST at 100 days out. Crazy little registry countdown clock!

What the hell? I don’t think I ever took into consideration that all this planning would lead to the big day, because my mind feels boggled by the concept of me walking down the aisle and getting married. And, with my first dress fitting looming a few weeks away I realized I better stop slacking at getting my arse to the gym, and I better stop eating all those damn tacos (well except for Taco Tuesdays…).

Okay, a disclaimer. I know I am not a plus-size bride and I am not here to whine that my size 2s are just TOO DARN TIGHT (because I will never be a size 2!). But, my desire to be in shape for my wedding stems from my past. I was a chubster! Baby fat, chubby, chunky, however you want to put it I was overweight and unhealthy. I like food and I like to eat. I grew up in a clean your plate(s) family. I was the polar opposite of an active child. My hobbies consisted of doing things like poking out all the chocolate chips in my Chips Ahoys, eating the cookie, and saving the chocolate chips for dessert (yes, I really did this). So, Hive for you only (and I guess whoever else stumbles upon this blog post) I am revealing a teenage awkward photo of myself to prove that I am not BSing you. Here goes:

A Weighty Issue Part 1: The Backstory : wedding fitness lancaster Chubbym Chubbym

Yes, I am aware I had oddly un-proportional legs

I can tell you one thing, Junior High was NOT fun. I had great girlfriends my whole life, but kids in general are really terrible. I survived Junior Hellschool and during the summer before High School I remember clearly thinking, “I should lose weight.” That summer I lost maybe 5 lbs. I wasn’t weighing myself at the time so I don’t know, but it wasn’t a significant loss.

My High School was great. I can honestly say there was no teasing or cruelty that I ever witnessed. But, I still felt like I should just lose the weight already. My mom had joined Weight Watchers sometime during my freshman year, and even though I didn’t want to go to the meetings (mostly my lazy ass did not want to wake up early on a Sunday morning) I used all her books and points calculator to do the old school Points system on my own, and it worked! Again, I wasn’t weighing myself then, but I went from chubby to “average.”

A Weighty Issue Part 1: The Backstory : wedding fitness lancaster Forblo for+blo

Our Senior Year trip to the Jersey Shore before it was a household name… yes, I’m wearing too much bronzer in hopes of blending in with my Italian best friends

I know the Points program has changed somewhat, but I can not talk-up Weight Watchers enough. Their “diets” make sense. They don’t make you eat stupid crap that you will soon give up on. The program honestly changes your life and how you think about food. By my senior prom I was down to a size 6, and then college came around…

Like most people I ate like PURE SHIT in college. I gained the freshmen 15 and then some. I would go through spurts of “I am going to be good,” where I would occasionally hit the gym and eat more salads. However, beer + late night eating + more beer + horrible food choices for weeks on end = blubbery. By the time I graduated I was really unhealthy and felt like garbage. I looked extremely swollen.

A Weighty Issue Part 1: The Backstory : wedding fitness lancaster Postco Post+Co

I could barely hustle downstairs to the subway to catch a train I heard pulling in (mind you this was running DOWN stairs, not up). The scale was telling me I was almost 160 lbs and I’m only 5’3.’’ My BMI put me as overweight, and my size 12s were telling me “ha ha you fool!” It still took me about a year after this knowledge set in to cut out the excessive vanilla lattes, bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches, and craptastic snacking.

Losing weight isn’t something to do on a whim to fit in a dress, but it can definitely be a great motivator. Even though my initial motivator came before our engagement, I’m not sure that my bride brain could have handled one more task.

Are you trying to lose weight before your big day? Have you tried a regimen like Weight Watchers? Which one have you tried, and have you found success?

Great post!!!
I bought my dress & it fits now BUT it can be taken down 2 sizes + it’s a corset so they bridal salon told me it can be 3 sizes in reality so that’s my goal BUT I’m not losing weight for the wedding … I’m a plus size gal & have been saying for years I’m going to lose weight, MrN loves me as I am (he met me as a plus size girl) BUT I want to get healthy & ready for having kids SO my wedding is the kick in the butt I need!!
thanks for your inspirational post!! :)

Miss Porcupine thank you so much for sharing. I am in a very very similar situation as you… during high school I was athletic and curvy but college hit and bam… no longer curvy.. move on to fat… I gained a whopping 50 pounds in the 4 years I was in school. By senior year I was so irritated I lost 30 pounds.. yay! over the last 5 years I’ve kept it off and even lost some more with the help of the awesome amazing weight watchers.. but its a constant day to day struggle. I just wanted you to know that as a fellow 5′3” girl, whose goal includes rocking size 8 jeans on my honeymoon, who has worn every size from 16+ to 10 in the last 5 years, who definitley had a moment when they ordered my wedding dress in what size!? (damn you bridal sizing), I have your back, and you will look beautiful on your wedding day!

i went on weight watchers for the wedding. i was able to lose 20+ pounds on it. i was also a beast in the gym for that whole time too(2-3 spin classes a week, kardio kick, aerobics, etc). i was able to have my dress taken in over 2 dress sizes, it was a great feeling. i know it seemed like i did it just to look good in my dress(and yes that was a reason!) but i also just didn’t like how i looked in general at that point. i’m pregnant at the moment, but i comepletly intend to go back on weight watchers once the baby is born. it just really makes you realize how you can still eat what you want, but have to make much better eating decisions.

omg porcupine, I feel like I could have written this!! And that pic of you in the Old Navy shirt looks exactly like I looked. I had that same outfit!! I am “trying” to lose weight, but I’m too poor/lazy to do weight watchers. :-/

I had recently taken up running when a friend asked me to sign up for a half marathon in March. Knowing I HAVE TO build up mileage on the treadmill unless I want to have the worst race EVER, has been the best motivation for getting me to the gym.

I have done the weight watchers thing and loved it! But I find that after about 6-7 meetings I just stop going and once the meetings stop then the point count stops. Oh well. I also wanted to tell you that I totally had one of those fake lifeguard sweatshirts from the jersey shore!

Very good post! I totally understand; I was overweight until a few years after college, and it took a dedicated diet overhaul to become “average.”

Oh boy. I’m about to sound like an ad.

I started using Medifast last month. I’m down 21 pounds. I haven’t excercised at all and, inexplicibaly, I’m not even hungry. It’s expensive as all get-out, but I swear to you it works (and this is coming from a girl who has tried every diet under the sun).

I am in the same boat, except my weight was gained after college. In college I was skinny due to no car and having to walk everywhere (+ a huge hill to and from my dorm). But law school did me in. I am a stress eater and ballooned to my biggest during the bar exam. Now I’m working hard to at least be my pre-law school size (which works out to about a 20 pound lost).

I’m not doing weight watchers, but I’m tracking what I eat in a phone application. Plus a nurse (from a free hotline attached to my insurance) gave me some great and easy advise to follow. It is called the Plate Method. Doctors recommend it for diabetes patients, but it lines up closely to the new USDA recommendations. Take a small plate and fill half of it with non-starchy veggies [I throw fruit here too]. Then 1/4 should be meat and 1/4 should be starch with a lowfat dairy to top it off.

I’m just starting, but so far it is easy to follow when I’m at home making meals. I’m just curious how people survive the holidays with treats and parties around every corner?

I haven’t done any major weight loss efforts, but I’ve got a lot of people around me who do. And I swear by Weight Watchers on their behalf. It’s not a diet, it’s a re-programming of bad habits.

@MrsN2Be: Goodluck on your weight loss goals! I’m sure can accomplish them.
@futuremrsbrunell: Wedding dress sizes are so weird! Strangely, my Wtoo gown ran the same as street sizes. It was the only designer I tried on that fit in that way. Congrats on your weight loss. I’m sure you will be on those 8s before you know it!
@sarbear2814: Wow! Congrats on the weight loss. Taking your dress in 2 sizes- quite the feat! Congratulations on starting your family. I’m sure WW will get that baby weight off in no time, so you can feel great chasing around the little one. :)
@Miss Unicycle: Haha, Old Navy was the bane of my existence thanks to pics like that. It took me years to go back to shopping there. And as for WW. Don’t pay!! (hehe shhh) You can find most of their point breakdowns online. If anything, just buy the books without joining the program and keep tabs of your points. I personally don’t like having a big support group around me when I lose weight so it worked for me w/o the meetings.
@peachplum09: I wish I could gain the drive to do a marathon. Good luck!!
@Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich: Yea, point counting does get annoying. I’ve pretty much stopped all point counting when I try to “diet” now. But, it definitely helped me to learn what I should & shouldn’t be eating. And yay for Jerz Shore fashion. ;)
@redheadartgirl: First, must say- LOVE the username ;) Congrats on your weight loss. Sounds like you found something that really works for you!
@sandiegosarah: Sounds like a good diet. We probably should all follow that method in life. During the holidays I definitely slip up. I figure it’s only once a year.
@Miss Kettle: Yes, it definitely reprogrammed my brain. Sometimes I chose to ignore the programming though, ha.

I too gained the Freshman 15+ (it was way more than 15). I’m almost back down to my normal weight, but I just can’t do anything productive between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Haha, I’ll get back to it in 2012.
