Miss Porcupine's Picture
Miss Porcupine, NYC/Lancaster, PA Age and Occupation: 26, Sales Coordinator/Publishing Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Assistant Manager/Sales Engagement Date: August 8, 2010 Wedding Date: March 2012 Venue: Riverdale Manor About Me: I'm a born and bred New Yorker with a love/hate relationship for the city I have always called home. Although I may seem quiet from afar, I have a loud personality once you get to know me. I am a book nerd at heart, but love a night out in the city with good friends. I have a serious addiction to all things cheese, chocolate, cardigans, Mexican food, and reality TV. The future hubs and I met in college, settled in New York, and decided to go with a rustic/peacock infused wedding in Lancaster, PA, right near his hometown. Come the big day, we will be together 5 years, and we're looking forward to making it official!
About Miss Porcupine

When I left off, I mentioned it took me a year to get into the whole weight loss idea.

At my current job I joined the gym in the basement, using the treadmill and elliptical for 45 minutes to an hour for four or five times a week. I started eating smaller portions and better food. I started cooking with a lot less fat and a lot more low-fat ingredients. I also stopped a lot of the mindless snacking I did. It took me a year to shed 20 pounds. Since I’m short, it was significant enough.

What I can recommend, which has worked for me (keep in mind I have NO dietary knowledge. This is just that works for my metabolism):

  • Stop drinking soda. Even diet soda. I was a HUGE Coca Cola freak before I cut it out back in high school. Within a week you will feel SO different. Within a month you will completely lose your taste for it.
  • Eat more whole grain/wheat products and less white flour foods. It took me a while, but I now like whole-grain pasta and breads (an occasional bagel in moderation is necessary, though).
  • Cut your portions down. Check out a guide to portions here at WebMD. Not going to lie, it SUCKS sometimes, but slowly but surely what it takes to get you feeling full will shrink down.
  • Exercise. I hate exercising, but I’ve learned that I am not the type of person who can get away with not doing any. I’m down to 30 minutes three or four times a week on the elliptical or treadmill. When I first started exercising I only saw significant weight loss when I did 45 minutes to an hour at least four times a week. I also lift five pound weights three to four times a week while watching TV. How everyone’s body reacts though is different.
  • Cut down your use of full fat products. I hate fat free cheese/sour cream/butter/etc., but I see little to no taste difference in reduced fat versions.
  • Eat small, lighter meals throughout the day instead of three big heavy ones.
  • Don’t base your happiness on the scale. It’s how you feel in your clothing and in every day life that matters. If your pants are falling down, but the scale won’t budge—throw the scale out the window!

I still hold true to many of those tips, but sometimes my daily eating gets off course and my desire to work out weans away. Winter makes me want to do things like eat giant bowls of chili and baked potatoes smothered in cheese while wearing oversized sweaters on my couch.

I don’t expect to lose more than the five pounds I’ve recently put on before the wedding, but I’d like to eat better and exercise more just for the sake of feeling better. Exercising and eating better/lighter just makes me feel more awake and energized. My biggest goal is to tone up my arms before the wedding. I also need to stop the mindless snacking I’ve been doing at night, the weekend Wendy’s runs, and full fat beer drinking (Blue Moon being my new go-to).

What are your tips for getting into shape? Anyone have good arm toning workouts? Getting my arms toned has always been a tough battle for me.

First, I would just like to say YOU LOOK AMAZING!… I struggle so much with eating right and getting my butt to the gym. Your totally right though that once you do it you just feel better/happier. For the arms, I wish I had an answer that my biggest problem too. ;( Thx for all the great tips!

Miss Porcupine Congratss!!! You look amazing!! Major Kudos!! I was at 213lbs and I am now at 138lbs! I hate exercising too, lol but dangit it has to be done! I do a lot of strength training and cardio! For arms I would definitely lift weights as well as incorporate weights for your whole body! That definitely was the icing on the cake!

I too hate fat free cream cheese. Yuck. I used to eat it because it was fat free but it just wasn’t worth it. Fat free is great!

Love this. You look great! Now tell me why Blue Moon is a good choice - I am a beer loving girl myself, and probably need to be a little more conscious of which ones I’m choosing - I’m sure my favorites are the high calorie ones :)

Congratulations on your weight loss & just wanting to be overall healthy.
I’m also trying to tone my arms so I’m interested in seeing the Bee’s recommendations!

I’ve been doing the video “Tank Top Arms” at night. It’s free on demand for me.

You look great Porcupine! And you did it the healthy way, which is harder, but so worth it!

You look great! Congrats!

Unfortunately I don’t lose my taste for Coke… I’ve tried really hard. Now I buy the mini-sized ones and have one a day with lunch, and I consider it portion sizing. So jealous that you were able to cut it completely!

@ennyen: Thank you! :)
@Porkchop: Congrats on your weight loss! Wow, that is an amazing amount to lose!!
@Miss Hawk: It really is a killer. Especially when it’s so cold here and I just want to lay down under some blankets lol.
@gmcurtis: Blah, yes FF cream cheese is the worstttt. I’d rather eat paint.
@Ms. Dove: Thanks!! And, I totally wrote that in a misleading way, sorry! I meant I have to cut the Blue Moon that is currently my go-to, because it’s def. not a light choice. =(
@alicia1745: Thank you! And I am going to have to check out this Tank Top arm workout!! Thanks for the tip.
@Mrs. Pony: Thank you =)
@gatorhailey: Every now and then I HAVE to have a fountain Coke. But, it’s really the only way I drink it now, and only once or twice a month. It took me awhile to give it up.
@punky2786: Thank you!

Congrats!! I’m also a short gal who couldn’t resist much of anything in college, so over the past few years, I’ve dedicated myself to shedding the pounds. 3 years and 60 pounds later, I’m now a size 8 and can’t wait to walk down the aisle in my beautiful dress in May.

Like you, I found portion control really tough. I LOVE red meat and steak, but have found if I buy one lean steak and split it between me and my fiance, that helps. If you have a quality piece of meat, even the proper portion (size of a credit card) is enough.

My cardio has been a mixture of Zumba and running…I can’t recommend Zumba enough, you burn at least 800 calories an hour and have so much fun you don’t feel like you’re working out.

Also, Ms. Dove, I’ve found Yuengling Light is a decent low-cal beer…99 calories, but ten times the taste of Miller Light or other domestics. Cheers!

You are looking h.o.t. Porcupine!! Congrats on the weight loss. :) Arms have always been tough for me, too - it’s the main thing I want to work on before the wedding. If it helps at all, it’s definitely a girl thing - our hormones just don’t let us tone as easy as men! A while back, I was doing 10 pushups in the morning and at night, and various weight training 3x a week. It wasn’t magic, but it definitely started to get me toned (before I stopped)!

I have that black dress! Love it!
Great job on the weight loss! It really is the little things that make the big difference! Also its good to reiterate that isnt logical to think you can lose weight and keep it off by only excercising or dieting. It takes both!

You look awesome! Congrats on the weight loss! I would love to tone up my arms a bit too, but I’m more of a cardio girl. I need to start thinking about weights.

Congrats on all the hard work. To tone my arms what worked best for me was the assisted dips and pull ups machine at the gym. It’s pretty much the only arm machine I use (when I’m not pregnant) to work out my arms.

I think you look great.
Cardio should be done at least 30min 3-4 times per week to maintain healthy body, and low fat or Fat Free you need to watch out for. Less fat sometimes means more sugar calories. Its a trade off.

I agree; you do look great, and it sounds like you feel pretty darn good, which is awesome. I decided to tone my arms up for the wedding too (I’ve always done sports where my legs were used more than my arms!), and started this summer with a personal trainer. She gave me 6-8 exercises to do in the gym, a mix of free weights and machines, about 30 minutes 3x per week. All are simple enough, and I’ve seen amazing results. I had no idea I would also lose weight in the bust area and tone my upper back in the process! I admit that I started this weight training in vain, but I have to say that I also feel much better for it. Daily lifting is a breeze and my back feels stronger. I am so happy I did it, and with plenty of time to spare before the wedding. It’s amazing how some definition in your arms makes you feel. Now I can’t wait to show off my arms in a sleeveless dress, whereas before all I wanted to do was cover them up. :)
