Rehearsing on the Strip

December 14th, 2011 @ 9:35 am by Mrs. Mole

So, does having your rehearsal dinner at a restaurant called Stripburger set an appropriate tone for your wedding? Mr. Mole and I think so. (Its name refers to the Vegas strip, hive, not strippers! Of course, the latter would be more appropriate to the bachelor/bachelorette parties.)

Mr. Mole and I decided to have a rehearsal dinner, even though we aren’t having an actual rehearsal. (We’re hoping that the first time’s the charm when it comes to performing wedding ceremonies.) We figured that a dinner was a nice way to welcome all of our guests to Las Vegas and spend some time with them before the wedding. Deciding to have the event, however, was significantly easier than deciding where to have it.

Maybe it’s just me, but I completely underestimated how much a rehearsal dinner would cost.

Or maybe I didn’t want to think about it? Anyway, the original numbers blew my mind and our budget. When we first started looking at different restaurant options, we were receiving food and beverage quotes that rivaled our reception cost. I wanted to find something that was cheap (under $20pp for food) and casual.

We first thought about ordering pizzas or picking up In N’ Out and serving the food in our hotel suite. I also looked into some catering packages from California Pizza Kitchen, which is one chain restaurant for which I have an irrational love. Going with one of these options would have allowed us to spend between $15-18pp, even if we picked up some beers and some bottles of wine. But I was feeling pretty “meh” on the idea of just having people over to our (admittedly very nice) hotel room.

Then, on a scouting trip to Vegas, we noticed Stripburger across the street from the Wynn. I emailed them and received a list of packages, which started at $25pp for food. I was able to negotiate a bit with the restaurant and knock off $5pp. We are also electing to serve some pitchers of sangria, buckets of beers, and sodas on the tables. If people want anything else to drink, there’s a bar right around the corner.

Our Rehearsal Dinner Menu:

  • Little Green Salad
  • Choice of hamburger, cheeseburger, blue cheese burger, vegetarian burger, or chicken sandwich
  • Fries, onion strings, and fried pickles to share
  • Chocolate fudge cake

Mr. Mole, his parents, and I went to Stripburger over Thanksgiving to check out the place and its food. Thumbs up, all around.

How did you decide where to have a rehearsal dinner? Did you budget appropriately for it, or did you experience some sticker shock like I did?

the prices are crazy. I started pricing things out labeling it a “small gathering” I didn’t want anything wedding attached to it. But I also wanted a brewery feel, no driving required and cost was a factor. Oh my gosh!!! Can we catch a break somewhere???

The quotes from restaurants for the rehearsal dinner were also pretty outrageous for us, even using my small hometown’s local businesses. We ended up just reserving the city center’s meeting room and having a homemade fajita buffet. My inlaws made everything the day before and bought some serving setups (the one’s that sit up off the table and you can put a can of fire gel underneath to heat the food) from Costco and then just hired two people for a couple hours to make sure everything was setup and running smoothly. I was really happy that they decided to go with it that way because both my husband and I had a ton of family coming from very far away and saving money on the food allowed us to be able to invite, and spend extra time with, all of our families without it costing an arm and a leg.

Yum!! It all sounds so delicious.. I think it’s a great choice! We definitely had a bit of sticker shock initially for the rehearsal dinner, but we were able to work out a great deal with our venue, so we’re just going to have it there. Makes life easy!

@Miss Ke Aloha: I agree. I’m not having any upcharge because it’s a wedding event; I just didn’t consider how much it would actually cost to feed 20-odd people! Whoops.
@lisaelanna: That’s awesome! I think that was such a great idea — and who doesn’t like fajitas? I think we would have gone in that direction if we were having a wedding where we live.

I think this sounds like the perfect rehearsal dinner! I agree that they are crazy expensive which is why we chose to go the pizza route.

@Mrs. Trail Mix: I am pretty pumped about it. I’ll have to watch my intake on the pickle fries, big white dress the next day and all.
@Miss Hawk: It was one thing I completely forgot to take into consideration when estimating our total costs! Ack.
@Mrs. Pony: Thanks! Honestly, pizza would have been amazing. We just didn’t have a great place to host it on the strip.
