The Wedding Brand

December 14th, 2011 @ 8:08 am by Mrs. Turkey

That’s not a typo up there. I meant to type wedding bRand.

As a marketer, when I thought about our wedding, I thought about it the same way that I think about my brands (well, aside from the fact that I’m a bit more emotionally attached to the wedding): What does our wedding stand for? How do we want our wedding to perceived? What would be the visual elements of our wedding?

While going through these questions (don’t worry, I didn’t make him white board it out), Mr. Turkey and I came up with a single phrase to use throughout the planning process: Modern Elegance.

So, it sounds nice and all, but what exactly does modern elegance mean? What does it look like? How will our guests feel it?

We thought about it this way…there are going to be things that are “trendy” right now that will date all the weddings in the 2000s and 2010s. These elements include, but are not limited to, photo booths, mini-foods, drink flags, iPhone photos, one-armed bridesmaids’ dresses, and even certain photography styles.

Every “generation” of weddings has gone through its fair share of trends, and embracing them makes a wedding up-to-date…or modern. And there are absolutely some of these elements that will be making an appearance on our big day.

However, we didn’t want to go overboard or look back later and feel like our wedding had a giant timestamp on it. That’s where the elegance comes in. We were looking for there to be an overall classic approach to many of our decisions—fairly neutral colors, by-the-book church ceremony, a traditional silhouette for my dress, simple decor, etc.

We saw the modern elements as a “twist” on a classic, elegant wedding, so they’d be somewhat of a secondary player, but visible nonetheless.

Make sense? Perhaps a consumer-brand example would be helpful…

Here’s a classic brand:

And here’s their modern expression:

Anyone else have a wedding brand? Or do you just think I’m a huge dork for thinking about my wedding like I do my work?

Ohhh Miss. Turkey I am so glad I am not alone. As a fellow marketing FI looks at me like im bananas when I obsess forever over little details and what feeling they may or may not convey… and what “brand” they will become together… It’s part of who I am and what makes me great at my job.. I’ve accepted it and moved on lol

I don’t think I have a brand, but I definitely have a feel I’m going for- and I’ll call it romantic femininity? I’m not sure when I became such a girly girl, but wedding planning definitely makes that part of my personality shine!

PS love the neutral inspiration pic!! GORGEOUS

I’m a marketer and envision my wedding the same way as you! Neutral, modern, timeless elegance. Can’t wait to see the rest of your planning!

I totally thought about my wedding in the frame of my work. I’m a campaigner and do special events all the time, so it was an easy fit. I met my husband on a campaign too, though he’s no longer in the business, but we used terms like “tick tocks” (the day’s schedule) and GOTV (literally Get Out The Vote, here crunch time) to convey what needed to be done and definitely utilized campaign tools like freeconferencecall.com in order to coordinate with the bridal party.

I say embrace it. Why reinvent the wheel?

I was a marketing major in college, and it definitely came out in the early stages of our planning. I had a discussion with my fiance what our “brand” should be, and he teased me about it so much! I’m glad there’s a like minded individual out there. :)

we had a “look and feel” that was carried out through the whole thing. our engagement shoot was taken in vintage setting, wearing vintage style clothes. ditto for our wedding. we even encouraged guests to wear vintage inspired clothes, and the turnout for that was noticeable!

I think most brides have a “brand” for their wedding, whether they know it or not. usually there is a theme and specific colors chosen, and sometimes they will even create a logo to be put on the cake, napkins, etc. so I do think many weddings end up being branded.

PS: I work in marketing too– which is great because I created & coded my wedding site, and designed / printed the paper stuff. it was the only wedding thing that I had any expertise on!

I know nothing of marketing but I understand what you are saying. We want a simplistic elegance. Lively and understated all at the same time. We want our family and friends to walk in and see what makes us as individuals and as a couple.

Nope, not weird at all. We didn’t call it “branding,” but we did establish a clear vision that could be succinctly expressed in a way that reflected our goal. Coincidentally, that was “modern elegance” and your centerpiece photo was one of my floral inspirations. Our vendors really connected with the phrase, and our guests definitely “got it,” too.

It seems like you’re just replacing the word “theme” with “brand.”

Interesting! I’ve never thought about our wedding in those terms.

I don’t think you need to be a marketer to understand what a brand is. Everyone from all walks of life experiences branding every day. Like daybyday said, it sounds like you’re just making a glorified version of a theme.

This is such a good way of explaining it! I must admit, I have not thought of a wedding brand, although now the wheels are turning…

@futuremrsbrunell: haha! Great to know I’m not the only one. I am sure all of the obsessing and attention to detail will pay off and your fiance will no longer think you’re ‘bananas’!

@Miss Elk: Theme, feel, brand…all the same :) Love all the romantic details you’ve shared so far - your description is right on and is totally shining!

@jpalm13: Love it!

@justsplendid: Wow - love how you incorporated your work so seamlessly. I can imagine that with your profession you’ll be handling the pressure of the day extremely well too!!

@playingdaisy: Fiance’s can’t help but tease ;)

@bonbon: The vintage details sound lovely. And I’m very impressed with you doing all your website and paper work - WOW!

@Miss Ke Aloha: “We want our family and friends to walk in and see what makes us as individuals and as a couple.” - Love this! Such a great way to think about the day.

@lovekiss: I love that inspiration photo - how did it come through on your day?

@Miss Mole: @Miss Hawk: @Miss Dalmatian: My brain is just wired this way, but as I said above, it’s just a different word for what every bride does!

I love this! That’s kind of how I thought about my wedding. We thought of it as quirky classic. We put unique twists on lots of classic wedding things. Our decor/invitation theme of frames didn’t come up til much later.
Modern Elegance is perfect!

Too funny you posted this. These were my thoughts throughout the entire wedding planning process.

I’m a graphic designer and an event planner. I know that I’m a perfectionist and to get to my ideal day, i needed to choose a theme and stick with it.

It helped me with everything from designing my own Invitations to prioritizing my most important vendors.

What I ended up with was an event that was memorable without being tacky or too trendy. It was a perfect day and a day that every one of my guests enjoyed immensely. I couldn’t ask for anything more.
