Mismatched Inspiration

December 15th, 2011 @ 7:36 am by Miss Turkey

The bridemsaids had spoken. No preference on color, but they wanted to pick their own dress style. Fair enough. I was loving all the weddings with “mismatched” dresses.

All the women look comfortable in their chosen dresses—picking designs that best flatter their figures. Isn’t that what everyone wants? My bridesmaids range in height from 5′ to 5′7″ and cover almost every shape and size in between. My maid of honor is on the taller end of this spectrum and, as a tall girl myself, I didn’t want her to be worried about a wardrobe malfunction due to a super-short dress!

So now the challenge was to pick a color as well as find a designer who had multiple styles to choose from (in the same fabric).

The color choice was easy…there didn’t seem to be ANY dresses out there in the green we were imagining.

Apparently dark kelly/hunter green is not a popular bridesmaids’-dress color.

Navy it was.

Onto the dresses. I attempted to look for dresses that had stores or showrooms near the bridesmaids so they could try them on. My first stop was Priscilla of Boston. There were eight choices (eight!) in the navy crinkle-chiffon fabric. I sent the options to the girls, and the styles were well received. I’d share them with you, but, um, they’re not available anymore for order. I also didn’t try any on, so no pictures.

While looking for wedding dresses at home, I was smarter and took photos of the Bari Jay dresses I tried on so that I could have a visual of what a mismatched bridal party would look like in real life. I loved it. Unfortunately, the styles I loved didn’t come in the right fabric. Sad.

Apparently I liked the hand-on-the-hip look.

A more feasible option was Aria. I couldn’t BELIEVE all the options they had. I narrowed it down to dresses that came in “midnight” silk shantung due to the fact that our wedding would be at night. With showrooms in Boston and DC, all the bridesmaids would be able to visit for a fitting. I also liked the prices, which ranged from $160–198, without any discounting factored in. Response was positive—nearly everyone had a favorite.

Then there was Lela Rose. Mysterious in price, but modern in style and lots of gorgeous options. I narrowed down all the choices for navy that existed for the bridesmaids to peruse. Response was somewhat lukewarm to these dresses…I think the missing price contributed to that. Note to Lela Rose—tell us how much you cost!

I realize I’ve only shared three brands so far, but I had gone through countless more before narrowing the list down (others considered: Coren Moore, Jenny Yoo, Lula Kate). It was getting exhausting. There was also the issue that I hadn’t “tested” any of the dresses besides Priscilla for quality, color, etc. I wanted to ensure I wasn’t sending the girls to try on dresses with scratchy fabrics or a “midnight” that looked more royal blue than navy. What to do?

It was then that I discovered Bella Bridesmaid. A boutique offering multiple bridesmaids’-dress styles in one place. What a novel idea!! And there are locations all along the East Coast—very convenient.

But it gets better! We had planned a girl’s shopping trip to NYC to look at wedding dresses (at Kleinfeld), and there just happened to be a Bella nearby…I was feeling hopeful that we might actually be able to pick dresses.

Were you overwhelmed by the number of bridesmaids’-dress options out there? How did you narrow it down?

I did different styles in Lela Rose “rose” with the silk - and they were pricey! I got them for $210, but i had to do so much research on prices! I agree, ANNOYING!

I love navy! That’s what I’m using for my BMs…and they all get to pick their own navy dresses from anywhere. It flatters all skin tones, and there’s also a very real chance they can rewear a navy dress, versus a kelly green one, in your case.

I found that I liked the look of slightly different shades and textures of the same color, and since I’m having an outdoor garden wedding, it works. (Also, my BMS live literally anywhere from California to New York, and I’m in Illinois…) They can get whatever they want in a certain length and with a few “guidelines”. This way, they pay what they want, and while I get “final approval” for each dress, nobody can ever blame me for a dress they hate.

I was a navy and green bride also… My ladies wore “Fern” silk dupioni by Lula Kate… chose their own style. The ladies at Lula Kate were wonderful to work with and the dresses were lovely. They will send out fabric swatches and are sold at Bella Bridesmaid as well.

We loved Bella Bridesmaid. We went there to see POB dresses and ended up with Dessi convertible dresses. Hands down the best shopping experience of the entire bridal journey. Can’t recommend them enough.

Ugh, picking bridesmaids dresses was exhausting. I ended up choosing a dress that they had in the boutique I bought my dress…so my girls got a 20% discount. Woo! We never got to go shopping together because my bridesmaids are scattered all over the world. I love the mismatched look, but it just got too complicated for me to figure out. It was easier to just pick one dress and call it a day!

We’re going this weekend! It always seems so exhausting and hard to find the BM dresses.
I like your idea of mismatched styles, though.

I love that you are going the mismatched route! It will be stunning and beautiful! I can not wait to see what your girls end up with!
I wanted to do mismatched as well, unfortunately, fate seemed to have a different idea. In the end, we ended up choosing Lela Rose LR155 in Spa for all the girls. They are NOT what I would call inexpensive, but the girls love them. $235 is the price for the dress and we did get 20% off on top of that which is nice. However, as soon as you hit a size 16 you start adding $20 to the cost. I am thrilled with the dress they chose, but I also feel guilty as many of them are large-busted and had to order the larger sizes so they would fit in the chest-area.

Yeah I’m still choosing bridesmaids dresses with the girls. They are all over the place ranging in height from 5′1″ to 6′1″ and sizes all over the map. It’s crazy.

I never really felt overwhelmed about the bridesmaid dresses. The maids of honor took over preliminary searches for style. The bridesmaids picked out a dress and I just approved the style and color. The only stressful part was finding the best price and choosing the perfect color.
I can’t wait to see what dresses your girls chose!

@Miss Mink: Sneaky…

@vreelans: Those are beautiful dresses - great choice!

@miz fizzix: Your bridesmaids must be so thankful to have so many options. They’re going to look lovely.

@Jennifer: @harriser: Lula Kate are such fun ‘party’ dresses! I thought they were beautiful.

@janeinbama: The convertible dresses are so intriguing to me. They didn’t have them in the store when we went - I was hoping to see in person. How did your bridesmaids wear them?

@bridester: Sometimes you have to go with simplicity, eh? With bridesmaids all over the world (wow!) I can’t even imagine the coordination.

@Miss Eagle: Good luck! Can’t wait to see what’s picked.

@Shrimp: A beautiful Lela Rose style! What a shame about the sizing, though. That hardly seems fair.

@TinyTina: The height difference is extra hard!

I’m using Aria, too, because of the try-on at home program. One of my sorority sisters used it and said it made everything so easy. Is the Aria salon in Dupont Circle still open? Last I checked, it wasn’t on the website.
