Oh So Excited to BEE Miss Opossum!!!

December 16th, 2011 @ 9:57 am by Miss Opossum

I can’t believe I am saying hello to THE hive right now. I opened the email inviting me to become a bee in the middle of a really tough day at my job as an after-school teacher…needless to say I squealed, jumped up and down (terrifying the kids that were sitting in my office), and totally finished my day off grinning from ear to ear. I had to let the shock wear off a little bit before I could sit down and write this post. Needless to say, it still hasn’t totally set in just yet!

I’ve been poking around on Weddingbee for years, long before there was an engagement ring in sight. What can I say? The hive is a pretty incredible place! I am so humbled to bee (sorry, it’s obligatory!) blogging among such an intelligent, creative, beautiful, and inspiring group of women.

So who are the Opossums? We’re ridiculously fun Floridians who have been dating since we were 16 years old…Mr. Opossum is the one thing I took with me from my high school biology class. Our last names just so happen to be close to each other in the alphabet, which meant we were forced to sit next to each other. He immediately started making goofy jokes, so of course I developed a girly little crush…one that has lasted for seven whole years! We’ve survived three high school proms, four years of long-distance commuting while in college, and four months on different continents while I was studying abroad in Italy. We’re finally back in one place and could not be more ready or excited to tie the knot!

I’m working toward becoming an interior architect, which means I’m putting together a design portfolio and applying to grad school while planning this wedding. I love being creative in pretty much every aspect of my life, so planning this wedding is just another great opportunity for me to flex my design muscle! I really enjoy traveling, trying new foods, running, hanging out with kids at my job, and forcing Mr. Opossum to take me on long drives.

Mr. Opossum is my brilliant partner in crime. Half way through engineering school (where he was making straight As), he decided that engineering wasn’t for the career for him. He is now on the fast track to becoming a firefighter, and I am so incredibly proud of him! In his free time he enjoys playing guitar, watching any movie he can get his hands on, and being a flanker on our local men’s rugby team. (Props to anyone who knows what that is…and no, rugby is not the game with the sticks, ha!)

We decided to go with Opossum because we literally debated about how to pronounce opossum a few weeks ago. (We argue debate like an old married couple…someday it will be totally appropriate.) My stance is that you absolutely canNOT ignore the O in opossum, so I pronounce it uh-poss-uhm. Mr. Opossum, in true Southern fashion, swears that it’s pronounced paw-sum. (Can’t you just hear Paula Dean saying it like that, y’all?)

After seven years of dating, we are so ready to get this wedding show on the road…and I am so excited to share the entire process with hive!

So whose side are you taking on the pronunciation issue? Is it uh-poss-uhm or paw-sum?

I’m on your side… simply cuz opossums and possums are two different animals. See wikipedia for the difference.

I say “possum”. I actually saw one on the road last weekend while visiting some friends. We thought it was playing dead. But some neighbors came outside and said it had been “playing dead” for 3 days and was probably actually dead.

Anyway….um, so happy to have you!

What a cute couple! I think the Ponies would be just as divided on the pronunciation issue :)

Congrats on getting selected to blog!

I totally hope that you throw some rugby bits in here or there, ’cause I’m a rugger just like your FI! (well… used to be, before I graduated!)

And it is totally uh-possum!

Miss Opossum, we are so alike! I met my boyfriend my senior year of high school and we have also survived different colleges and a stint abroad. And, of course, I’m on Weddingbee right now, way before any engagement will happen ;) Looking forward to your updates!

Thanks everyone! I’m so happy to be here!

@H: I TOTALLY saw that and rubbed it in Mr.O’s face… hahaha. He is a pretty huge wikipedia fan.

@Mrs. French Bulldog: I’m so glad to meet a fellow designer!! I went to architecture school for undergrad and I’ve recently decided that the interior stuff is more my cup of tea!

@anna4041: Mr. O’s hair was even longer at one point… crazy I know! Haha.

Welcome, lady! I cannot get over how cute your icon is. I always say “possum”–but I am from Texas and hardly anyone says “opossum” here.

I learned while studying in Australia that they have Possums there, that are different animals, so the ones here are Opossums! Before that, I would probably have said Possum for our animals too!
