Tips and Tricks?

December 16th, 2011 @ 1:59 pm by Mrs. Mole

I’ve been thinking of all of the tips and tricks that I have picked up from wedding magazines and blogs (including the Weddingbee blog and boards) along our nine-month engagement. I learned from Mrs. Cola how to pee on your wedding day without taking half of your guests into the stall with you. I learned from christi how to alter a wedding dress to fix potential problem areas. I learned from Mrs. Hamster the importance of numbering your RSVP cards.

Now, I have to admit that I didn’t fully appreciate Mrs. Hamster’s advice in the beginning. Mr. Mole and I even got into a small debate about numbering all of our RSVP postcards. He thought it was a good idea; I thought it was a good waste of time. “Seriously, I don’t know how ANYONE could forget to put their name on a postcard,” I huffed while penciling in little numbers in the corner of each card.

Then, yesterday, we got this in the mail.

Poor RSVP: nameless and slightly disfigured

Okay, Mr. Mole. You were right. Thanks for talking some sense into me. Because I numbered each postcard, I only had to match up the number on the front with the corresponding number on our guest list spreadsheet.

Hello Number 20, aka Dear Friends from Milwaukee

So, hive, what wedding-related tips and tricks have you learned along the way? What advice can you share? (Anyone have an easy system for creating seating charts, perhaps? Anyone? Anyone?)

I chose to wear spanx that go all the way up to the bra. I found out the hard way that I had to take my dress off to get the spanx pulled all the way back up again! good thing I am able to pull up a back zipper w/o assistance.

needless to say, I ended up ditching those spanx halfway through the reception!

so here’s my tip: instead of spanx, consider choosing a dress with a built-in corset instead!

Very good advice indeed. We had so many card come without names and it was such a pain to track down who they belonged to.

@janie-janie: I wore Spanx to my sister’s wedding, and despite the “double gusset” feature they were a HUGE pain. I knew that I didn’t want to fool around with them on my wedding day, so I just bought a bustier — and found a dress that keeps me sucked in. :)
@Mrs. Pony: I just had no idea it was going to be an issue! It would have been a huge pain to figure it out since we have a lot of guests coming from that city!

Oh I’m totally doing the number thing. I think I’d go nuts tracking people down if even one person forgot to write their name down. In a stressy way, not a crazy way. ;) Good call, Mr. Mole!

@Miss Fox: I have to admit that I would probably go crazy in a crazy way. J/K haha. It’s getting too close to the wedding.

We numbered ours in pencil too. Considered using the black light pen but then I’d need the light to view it… and we had started to cut corners at that point.

Actually - yes to the seating chart.

Find a piece of poster board and several colours of sticky notes.

Cut the sticky notes into strips, colour coding each category of guests. (Ex: yellow is her family, blue is his, green are his parent’s guests and so on.)

Print big numbers on the posterboard, leaving enough room for a couple of sticky notes in between.

As RSVPs come in, write the name of the person on the correctly coloured Post It strip and put it at a table.

This way you can move people easily and see if you have good groups of people. You can also easily see the entire plan all at once.

Hopefully this helps!

@Mrs. Pain au Chocolat: We waited so long to assemble and mail them that we didn’t have time to order anything extra! We barely got our address stamp in time. The pencil worked just fine.
@red_pepper_gal: Great tip! Thanks so much! I appreciate it.

I numbered ours, too. This was also to keep track and make sure that we received the same number of invites and response cards.

@red_pepper_gal: I am so going to do this - I was thinking about an online program but Ugh… It was just too much. I’m a simple person - Color coded Post its - Perfect!

@Future Army Wife: Oh that’s a reason that I didn’t think about!
@Miss Ke Aloha: I think the hands-on approach will work better for my brain too. :)

It boggles my mind that people would forget to write their name, but I guess it happens pretty often! We will definitely be numbering our response cards!

@Iris: Glad I could pass it along!
@Miss Hawk: My “S— That Girls Say” response is “I know, right???” Haha.

Yes! Numbering the RSVP cards was actually one of the first important things I learned from the hive :)
