About Miss Doily

A Charitable Favor

December 18th, 2011 @ 12:05 pm by Miss Doily

Favors pretty much always look the same around my neck of the woods. It’s some type of candy wrapped up in some kind of fabric. It’s a great choice, but it’s just not us. So I started to do some soul-searching as to what I wanted our favor to be.

Mr. D voted for something practical (this is coming from the man who once bought me a comforter for my birthday!). When I asked him to elaborate he said maybe we could do bottle openers or beer coozies. Yes, I come from a population of perdy hard beer drinkers so Mr. D wanted to help them open them or keep them cool. I wasn’t so down with that. I mean these are cute and all:

but just not what I was looking for.

Then I started considering something eco-friendly.

I love giving back to the earth, so what if I could do something that would give back to the planet and serve as a favor? I saw these while perusing the internet and really loved them:

Unfortunately, they are just too out of our price range to pull them together. Not to mention, pretty time consuming, since I would have to care for them until they are given away. Oh, and did I forget to mention the fact that I kill anything that is green? This became a big fat no. Le sigh.

I still wanted to do something eco-friendly and something that I was passionate about. That’s when I started to consider combining a favor with something else that I love to do: give back to charity.

One of Mr. D’s grandfathers passed away from lung cancer, as did both of my grandfathers. So we have decided to make a large donation in honor of our guests to the American Lung Association. We also want to give something tangible to them, so I’m going to make “Seeds of Hope” packets.

I’m going to take some of these:

And fill them up with some wildflower seeds. And I’m going to print this on some labels and stick them on said envelopes:

And, BAM! We’ve got our favors that I think that fills both of the criteria we were looking for. I can’t wait to actually get the favors put together so I can show you all the outcome!

Are you considering any charitable causes for your wedding favors?

I’ve got a poll going on this very topic right now. I’m just not sure what to do. :/

Love this. My fiance just got engaged a month ago, but we have been talking about doing favor donations since about two years ago. We’re not sure what we want to do yet, but I’m a NYC English teacher and I would love to donate to some sort of organization that donates books to kids, or a reading program for unfortunate children. My fiance would love to help an animal (or specifically dogs) organization. I think we might do both… my organization for half of the guests and his for another… or we might choose one together (such as food banks or the homeless in NYC or Something!!) and just do that. I think it is a waste to buy a favor that people will just throw out when you can help someone. We were also thinking of getting a small organza filled with candy and attach the label stating our donation. I priced it out after buying in bulk and it wasn’t that much, maybe $150.

Great job! :)

LOVE this favor. My mom is a cancer survivor so this hits close to home for me. Great idea!

ummm…stealing. I hope you do not mind. We are doing donations instead of favors but can’t figure out how to let people know what we donated to. We are doing a cancer donation and one to help the rescue where our dog came from, so this would be an easy way!

I love this idea. My fiance and I have the same idea. We will be donating to American Thyroid Ass. and a charity for Lymphoma.

I totally support the idea o charitable favours, and we are hoping to do something like this as well.

Guests don’t care about favours, and to make them affordable you usually just end up with something, well, cheap, and all too often, disposable.

Good for you!!

We did a donation favor as well. We donated to the local SPCA where we rescued our doggie. It is a cause that is close to both us and our families. We used Vistaprint.com to make little tent cards explaining the donation that were placed at each place setting.
We also did a candy bar with take out boxes so people did not leave empty handed!

We booked a photobooth so the guest favor would be a photo of themselves! Can’t wait to use it!!

We also made a donation to the animal shelter where our beloved puppy was rescued from. The shelter was kind enough to print the cards to give our guests, using the text we came up with. I rubber stamped the cards with little black paw prints.

Then, so our guests would have something to take home with them, I hired a local baker to make paw print shaped cookies. She attached the donation card with the cookies. They were adorable and a big hit.

This was also one of the ways we incorporated our dog into the wedding.

I love your favors! We are doing something similar. My FFIL passed away from lung cancer two years ago and we thought this would be a great way to honor him and help give back to the greater community.
