About Mrs. Mole

Four-Eyed Bride (and Groom)

December 19th, 2011 @ 8:51 am by Mrs. Mole

Without corrective lenses, Mr. Mole and I are both blind as…well, moles. We’ve both been wearing glasses since middle school. Mr. Mole even underwent LASIK surgery as an adult so his lenses no longer look like the bottom of Coke (or, Mr. Mole’s preferred soda, Pepsi) bottles. Between the two of us, we own 10 pairs of prescription glasses and sunglasses and a large stash of disposable contact lenses.

As such, Mr. Mole and I have been faced with two questions: Will we wear glasses on our wedding day? If so, which glasses will we wear?

We ended up taking some photos to test out the different looks. I quickly pulled my hair back to approximate a wedding day do. (My hair is now long enough to make a tiny ponytail, which means it’s time for another pre-wedding chop!)

Clearly, the prescription sunglasses didn’t make the final photo array cut

A shows me in contacts; B in my “certainly aren’t pretty” glasses; C in my crystal Warb Parkers; and D in my newest pair, my green Warby Parkers. In looking at these pictures, I realized how much I love all of my frames. However, I also realized that my eyes tended to focus on the frames, not my face.

Clearly, wearing all of the pairs was not a viable option!

I have decided to rock A and wear contacts on my wedding day — although C and D will certainly make their appearances at various points during the weekend and throughout our honeymoon. The truth of the matter is that I wear my contacts at least 50% of the time, so I think I look most like “me” when I have them in.

Mr. Mole, on the other hand, rarely takes off his glasses. He rotates through his pairs pretty regularly, so he’s feeling a bit stuck on which pair to wear for our wedding.

Four different looks, one handsome man

A shows Mr. Mole in his oldest pair, which are wire-frames; B in his cobalt blue pair; C in his black retro pair; and D in his new Warby Parkers, which are named after one of my favorite poets.

I know which way I am leaning. I love B. I think the blue frames provide such a great pop of color, and Mr. Mole never fails to get compliments when he wears them. But, hive, what do you think?

Which pair should Mr. Mole wear on our wedding day?

I like them in this order: B, A, C, D for Mr Mole :-)

I picked B! I like A but like you said, the blue is really nice.
I don’t wear glasses but my fiance does and I have not thought at all about that fact! Must add that to my list of decisions to make (or for him to make, I guess!)

I am stuck on this too what to wear, if to wear, the whole thing is in question. Thanks for this post!

I voted for D– I’ve always loved glasses that are bold and make a statement. they are going to look really good with a suit or tux!

I remember back in the 90’s, all you could find were wire framed glasses. I had to give my optometrist a pair of plastic sunglasses to put prescription lenses into, it was the only way I could get the bold glasses I wanted!

I wear my contacts 95% of the time, so that’s what I wore. My fiance wears glasses, so he wore his. The only thing is that I made him wear his old ones, because his new ones are transitions & I wanted to be able to see his eyes during our vows (which were outside, in the sunshine, in September). During the reception, he switched to his newer frames :)

I voted for B. I love the color and the frames really suit his face perfectly.

I vote B for your Mr.! I also love B on you - so cute! I’m going to be rocking my glasses on our wedding day — not that I really have a choice. I had a corneal transplant a few years back and contacts are still out of the question as a result.

I love this post, I’m a little jealous at how many cute frames you have since I’ve been rocking out the same pair for the last 3+ years and they are scratched to crap. I definitely like the blue pair on the Mr. and I also went with contacts on my wedding day so I can certainly understand the desire to do so. You look great either way though =)

I love pair D on Mr. Mole, but they are very much “fashion” frames at the moment and very on-trend. My worry would be that they will look dated in your photos in a few years time - how much you think that might bother you is worth considering. I think B and C are both great frames that are still a statement but more timeless.

Thanks everyone for the votes! It’s really nice to get some outside opinions. I think the issue is that I really like all of our frames — but some of them don’t really match the occasion. Others aren’t classic enough. To avoid dating our photos, we weren’t going to put Mr. Mole in tight, skinny suit pants, so we probably shouldn’t put him in hipster glasses either. :)

@janie-janie: This is another time that I wish I had some of my childhood photos scanned in. I had some HUGE, magenta pink, Sally Jesse Raphael style plastic frames back in the day. (Of course, I was at a stage in my life where I matched them to most of my outfits, meaning my wardrobe was incredibly pink as well.) I almost wish that wire-frames would have been my only option.

B for sure!! I almost always wear contacts, but since I lost vision insurance last year I have been rocking my glasses because I didn’t want to pay for contacts. I really hate the way I look with glasses though… Must remember to purchase contacts for wedding!

@gmcurtis: @Miss Aardvark: Doing a photo array definitely helps! It really allowed me to see why I liked a certain pair of frames.

@Mrs. Ticket: Get yourself to warbyparker.com! Glasses are 95 bucks a pop (150 for prescription sunglasses), and they donate a pair for every pair purchased. The best part is that you can order 5 frames to try out the shapes for free before you commit to buying a pair. You can have your optometrist fax over your prescription information.

@Irish_in_Oxford: I think we were writing the same thing at the same time! Good point. ;)

C frames are giving me a “clark kent”/classic feel, so I voted for C! I also really like D, but personally all I see are the frames, I’m kind of torn on that one!

@TinyTina: I hoarded my disposables so I would have enough for the wedding. I haven’t been to the eye doctor in years, so I am super excited to get on Mr. Mole’s amazing (and comprehensive) insurance. :)

We were two-glasses couple as well! Your options are all great, you both have a “face for glasses!”

@SugerPlum: That’s exactly how I see D as well. I helped pick them out, so I love them. But they do make a pretty strong statement.

@Mrs. Hermit Crab: Haha, thanks! Hey, if genetics couldn’t give us good eyesight, at least it gave us a face to support corrective lenses. ;)

I’m also a bespectacled bride, but will be rocking contacts on the big day.

As far as Mr Mole goes, i’ve voted A but also like B - because those two are a more “classic” look.
