Now one of the most frequent questions we get as a lesbian couple is, “Who proposed to who?!” and “Who gets the ring?” Well—I’m here to tell you that we BOTH proposed, and we both got rings! We’re both fairly “girly” girls and we both wanted a proposal and rings. We’re both a little…lipstick. Props if you got that reference!

Anyway—because we both wanted a ring and we both wanted proposals, this wasn’t a “surprise.” We picked out rings together and set out a day we were going to propose to one another. Yes, we are GEEKS. We wanted it to be on the same day, so that we could say that was the day “we” got engaged. I’m a scientist, what can I say?
So, we picked out our rings, and we were all set to go. It was supposed to be happening on a Wednesday. I was working at the hospital until about midnight on the Tuesday night, and little did I know that when I came home to our apartment around 12:15 AM, my then-girlfriend would be waiting up for me, sitting on our couch. She told me to come sit down…and that she had something to show me.
I knew what was happening, but I didn’t know WHAT she had done! She pressed play on the TV and a video of “us” popped up. She had made around a five-minute “story of us” DVD and, at the end, asked me to marry her, on screen. It was really cute because she never said it out loud until I said…“Well, you have to actually ASK me!” and then she did. We both were giddy and happy with excitement, and I was marveling at my new shiny ring, since I had never seen it in real life before. (We ordered it online.)
I remember barely being able to sleep that night! I was so nervous that my proposal wouldn’t live up to her epic video-montage proposal.
The next night, she had to babysit her cousin’s kids last minute, so I knew it was perfect timing for me to set up my proposal. (What was I thinking? If she wouldn’t have left the house, this wouldn’t have worked.) Now, how I proposed may be a bit cheesy, and I will admit to seeing it done on a few TV shows before, but it still made me happy and excited, and I knew that Fiancee Eagle would love it. She absoloutley loves sentimental and romantic things. So, my plan was to set up about 200 candles in our kitchen, spelling out “Marry Me?” and to be waiting on one knee when she came in the door!

It worked! She came in (although she said she saw the glow from outside and thought the apartment was on fire! *facepalm*) and was absoloutley stunned, and said yes. We had picked out her ring in a brick-and-mortar store so she had already seen it, but she was still so excited to finally get to wear it.
All of this in a span of less than 24 hours! I was very happy that we both got proposals and that we both got fairly traditional diamond-solitaire engagement rings.
Was your proposal less than traditional, too? Did you propose to your partner, or did they propose to you (or both)?!
