Over Your Head

December 20th, 2011 @ 5:49 am by Miss Opossum

One of my favorite new wedding trends: overhead decorations. There is something whimsical and celebratory about Chinese lanterns, chandeliers, fabric, or even umbrellas creating a new ceiling for a wedding venue.

I’m not sure I can pull anything like this off at our wedding, but I sure am going to try!

These simple, colorful paper lanterns take this venue from a party to a unique wedding reception.

I love this unique idea from Duet Weddings. They stripped the traditional wedding tent so that the guests could experience the trees overhead, but still used the tent structure to hang draped curtains and beautiful rustic chandeliers.

This wedding featured on Poppytalk also modifies a tent in a unique way. Floating bright balloons at the top of the tent bring the eye up, while the pretty mirrored ribbons tied to the ends of the balloons reflect light, making the whole space feel airy and large.

This wedding featured on Style Me Pretty created interest in a rustic space by hanging a variety of odds and ends from the center of the venue space. The result is stunning.

This last image is one of the most unique and my new favorite idea for a dance floor. Who would have thought that some upside down, hanging umbrellas and some string lights could create such an interesting dance-floor space?

What do you think of overhead decorations? Do you have any unique ideas for something to hang overhead?

I agree, these are so pretty! My venue has SUPER high ceilings, so I doubt we’ll use them, but they look great.

I wanted to hang dark sparkly tulle from the ceilings to bring them down and create a more romantic night-like atmosphere. Also, we are getting married in front of a tree. I want to hang chandeliers from the branches. Totally excited about that one! :)

I love this look, especially outdoors! This was something that was shot down as soon as we found our venue though, so I’ll have to live vicariously through you :)

My ceilings have a mix of fabric draped from the peaked middle to the corners and then 8 vegas crystals varing from 6-10 feet and then japanese laterns. It was absolutely beautiful!

Great inspiration photos! I was all about hanging lanterns and lights, but it doesn’t really make sense for our venue. I hope you get to use some of these beautiful ideas!

Oh wow, I love the umbrellas! It looks so beautiful! Unfortunately, like Mrs. Pony, we can’t do anything like this at our venue. Can’t wait to see what you end up doing!

I’ve never seen the upside down umbrella decor, but I love it!! We’ll likely be doing lanterns - they are definitely my favorite overhead decor. :)

I love the chinese lanterns idea, I might DIY some for my wedding but I’m still not sure.

A restaurant that we used to go to in Chicago had umbrellas hanging down from the ceiling like in your inspiration photo. I always thought it looked nice. :)
