Statement Necklaces

December 21st, 2011 @ 12:05 pm by Miss Opossum

My new favorite wedding-attire trend is statement necklaces. They are so chic and they are all over the red carpet right now. I feel like this is one trend that won’t outdate your photos 20 years down the road (unlike puffy sleeves and headband veils…oh the ’80s).

Would you consider wearing a statement necklace on your wedding day?

I really like statement necklaces, but only under very specific circumstances in the wedding world. #1- the dress must be SIMPLE
#2- you cannot wear any other jewelry at all- my biggest pet peeve is a necklace with a bracelet with earrings all matching and all large.

If and when someone meets those criteria, I am happy and love the look. Otherwise, I prefer no necklace on the big day.

LOve em!! I made my own necklace…def goin for the statement look. I might even layer some necklaces. I actually have a small gold necklace my Love gave me on our one month anniversary when we were sixteen (we’re 26 now). So I’m going to definitely wear that one too. I also want to wear my St. Christopher from my mom and a Cross. I will be wearing a lot of jewelry. It will be gorgeous!!!

I also think rules should be thrown out the window. Wear what makes you happy. Pile on the bracelets and necklaces if it makes you feel gorgeous.

I LOVE those necklaces, but I do wonder about whether the bolder/more colorful ones will look dated in 20 years. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t wear one- I think they are gorgeous, but I think the more colorful costume jewelry might not be in style in 30 years or so. That said, I’m no fashionista (I couldn’t tell the difference between Gap and Gucci) so take my comment with a grain of salt

I love statement necklaces, but my dress has so much beading that I’d be going wayyyy overboard if I wore for the wedding.

I’m wearing a statement necklace! For the ceremony it’s one from my grandmother & for the reception I got a huge purple crystal one. It’s awesome :)

I LOVE statement necklaces and have several that I wear for special occasions.

However my dress has a beauitfully detailed neckline/bodice that I don’t really want to distract from plus I’ll have a fur stolle too so I don’t want to go TOO overboard.

I do think they’re gorgeous though.

I disagree with them not looking dated in 20 years though… the are such a “now” trend that even the most elegant ones I feel might have a date stamp on them when viewed down the road. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing but I do think it’ll be noticeable.

It’s okay to look dated though! What looks dated in 20 years looks “classic” in 50. Truth!

I do love them, but they just are not for my wedding day. My dress is a whole lotta lace, and therefore needs simplicity. I’m with Miss Doe, the dress needs to be simple. But that’s just me! :)

Wedding necklaces always enhance the beauty of the bride and the wedding dress too. It will attract everyone’s attention during the wedding ceremony.

@TinyTina: @Miss Elk: @Miss Doily: I haven’t shared my dress yet… but it is literally as simple as you can get. No beading, no lace. I’m hoping a fun necklace will dress it up a bit!

While stalking acquaintances on facebook I’ve recently come across several brides who decided to wear statement necklaces on their big day, and though I normally love big jewelry, I have to say that I am NOT a fan of it in bridal. The necklaces look great on models in the magazines but anytime I’ve seen a real person do it it just doesn’t end up looking quite right and sometimes overwhelms the bride and is distracting. I also definitely think it WILL date your photos, though I don’t necessarily think that that is always as horrible a thing as people make it out to be.
