Miss Fox, Washington DC/Havre de Grace, MD Age and Occupation: 26, Massage Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Field Support Engineer Engagement Date: April 18, 2010 Wedding Date: June 2012 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m a dancer turned massage therapist who was born and raised in New York. Alas, true love has brought me “south” where I still maintain my penchants for pretty shoes, wine, crossword puzzles, cherry blossoms, and the Mets. I own more sunglasses than a normal person should and don’t eat red meat (though I make up for it by eating my weight in sushi). I tend to be a big planner who likes to get things started early, but generally end up being indecisive and procrastinating when it comes down to it. I have a (not so) secret crush on Chris Carrabba, but my loyalty and love ultimately goes to the future hubs, of course! Together, my Foxy man and I love to discuss (read: debate) politics and current events, have Mario Kart and Scrabble duels, and just laugh. A lot. We’re hoping and planning for a laid back, fun, summery, rustic vibe to our June wedding that will be genuinely “us” – that is, if we finally make some decisions. Huzzah!

Friendors

December 22nd, 2011 @ 12:36 pm by Miss Fox

Shockingly, Urban Dictionary does not have a definition for this yet. My personal, bare bones description would be: a friend who is also a vendor for an event (like…a wedding); aka, a friend with some form of mad skillz that you just must make use of.

There’s lots of information and articles on using friendors for your wedding - heck, just look here on Weddingbee: Mrs. Ostrich, Mrs. Sloth, and Mrs. Argyle (to name a few) all wrote fairly recent posts about the matter. As with anything, though, there are general pros and cons of using said friendors. Having a friend as a vendor allows you to include some friends in significant ways for your wedding, it can give you a better understanding of certain aspects of vendors, and it can even result in a reduced rate for said vendor. On the other hand, you may have a friendor who now can’t enjoy your wedding because they are too busy working, confrontation may escalate quicker than normal, or you don’t feel comfortable being completely honest with them since you don’t want to hurt their feelings. It’s definitely a fine line—hiring a friendor takes a lot of trust and a lot of commitment.

So far, Foxy and I have hired 4…count ’em, 4!…friendors. Here’s the list:

1. Invitation designer

The very first thing I started thinking about after we got engaged was the invitation suite (what, that’s not normal?). I was convinced I would design and assemble the whole thing myself - easy peasy, right?. Well, I started to design it and hated everything. Fortunately, my good friend Michelle emailed me not long after and mentioned that she would be willing to design our invite suite at a sweet discounted rate, because, duh, she’s a graphic designer. I really have no idea how I forgot this, but I jumped on the deal and Michelle whipped something up in no time. In the end, we only had her design an invitation and RSVP card, as her business started picking up and had many other (full paying) clients to tend to. Foxy and I were a-OK with this—we just adore the look and feel of our invites. I’d say friendor #1 has already been a success!

2. Officiant

I wrote about this just the other day, but our friend E will be officiating the ceremony. We’re thrilled at this, as we just know she will make the ceremony personal and work with us on getting all the details just right. She and I have yet to sit down and really discuss all things ceremony related, but I have high hopes!

3. Hair Stylist

So get this.. the hair stylist for myself and the girls is actually Officiant E’s sister-in-law, and she was hired before E was! I met Brianna about a year ago now, and we connected quickly over our mutual upcoming weddings and her fabulous stylist skills. A few months and several Facebook messages later, she was booked! I’ve heard and read wonderful things about her work from E and others, and very much look forward to working with her. I kind of want my hair trial NOW. But word on the street is that 6 months out is a bit too early. Oh well.

4. Makeup Artist

This is the most recent friendor addition, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Remember my wedding twin, M? She’s always been fabulous making herself up and has a mighty impressive makeup collection. We had a phone date not too long ago, chatting about details of our respective upcoming weddings, when the issue of hair and makeup costs came up. When I mentioned my conundrum (which would be lack of funds to afford one, and wanting one to come to our venue rather than me going to them), she mentioned that she had wanted to ask me if I wanted her to do my makeup for the wedding, as well as that for the rest of the bridal party. I honestly couldn’t believe what I was hearing…one of my bridesladies, completely willing to donate time to pretty up the party. Of course I said yes on the spot—how could I not?? I’m going to owe her big time, and I couldn’t be more thankful for it!

That’s about it (for now)…although you could add another 5 on there if we indeed do the Flip Wedding and have friends film everything for us. Ohh, friendors. Love you.

I’m hoping to ultimately do another post once the wedding is over to recap how everything went—here’s hoping all goes well!

Are you hiring any friendors? Or, if you already did, how did it pan out? What are some pros and cons of hiring friendors?

I am using a Friendor but only for pre wedding stuff, invitations, craft discouts.
The day before and of the wedding, guests will be guests and those who would have been more than happy to be friendors had I asked them to will be standing next to me.
I’ve been a friendor at several weddings. And I loved doing so but will not - will not allow the people I love most to work. Its my wedding (meaning mine and my favorite man) and I want to share the day with them.

I think if you’re aiming for a wedding under a certain budget, you either have a very no fuss/no muss event or have a fair number of friendors. My friendors include the florist (my mom, so actually momdor?), photographer, officiant, hair/makeup (cousin), and probably a DOC friendor contingent as well. Having friendors makes communication and coordination even more important but I also think it makes for a more meaningful wedding.

Yes!

Our photographer is a friend of mine. He is mostly a journalist but has a wedding portfolio too, I’m excited because I love his work and he’s cutting me a screaming deal.

Also my reader is doing my hair/makeup morning of. I don’t really consider that a “friendor” since she doesn’t professionally do makeup, but you included yours so I’m doing mine!

That’s about it. I would have had my friend who recently graduated pastry school do the cake but it had to be from a professional bakery :(

Oh! Another friend is providing the string quartet, but he’s not playing, it’s friends of his… so I don’t know if that counts.

I have a few friendors (love the term!), my MOH is a pastry chef for a well known caterer, and is making my wedding cake (graciously, as our wedding gift) , another one of my bridesmaid’s father is a fantastic florist, who we are using (we used them for my sister’s wedding too!), is it strange to have your florist as a guest at your wedding?? and my DJ, I’ve known since elementary school (though we’re not friends - so maybe he’s more of an aquaintor?)

Our caterer is a friendor, a lovely friend of my mother’s who has had a catering business for over a decade and whom my mom has actually worked with. We’re so excited to give her our business and know she will put her heart and soul into our wedding!

Our wedding isnt even until 2013 and we have a bunch of friendors! Our pastor is a friend of mine, my cousin is a photographer and shes shooting the wedding as our wedding gift (minus printed pictures), and another old friend is doing our engagement photos (my cousin lives pretty far away and cant do them). Im not worried at all about having friendors.

@Miss Ke Aloha: It’s great to hear the point of view of *not* hiring day-of friendors - you definitely have a valid point! I’m sure everyone will be happy to celebrate your big day alongside you!
@radical4peace: Momdor! Love it! Part of the reason I love having friendors included is for the exact reason you mentioned - some moments, I feel, will mean more to me than they would have if we just had any other person do it.
@Lexy: SO jealous of your photog friendor! That’s amazing that he is cutting you a super deal. And the quartet totally counts! Referrals are the best.
@LibraryBride2013: It sounds like you have all the big ones covered! I love that your MOH will be making the cake.. best. gift. ever.
@All In: That’s wonderful! It definitely adds an extra sentimental value - I’m sure she’ll do a fantastic job!
@caitlyn1109: Good to hear! If you keep the right boundaries and communication, I think using friends as vendors is so incredibly wonderful.
@peachplum09: So very excited about both!!

One of my sorority sisters (an architect / graphic designer) offered to design my dream invite. Sadly, she got super busy at work, and I didn’t want to stress her out. It would’ve been really cool to have her do that. She’s the kind of person who won’t sleep for days on end to do something right, and it’s not fair of me to ask her to do that on top of her job and life.
