Miss Mink’s Registry Regret

December 22nd, 2011 @ 7:37 am by Miss Mink

I just got a disappointing surprise. I spent a couple hours at Macy’s creating our registry just a few weeks ago. The experience was a good one and I felt like Macy’s registry page was easy to navigate and simple to use. They had some nice perks of which we’d be able to take advantage after the wedding, too. Registering seemed like one of the easiest parts of the wedding planning process.

When Rue La La had some items from our Waterford china pattern for sale a couple weeks ago, I wondered if my chosen pattern was being discontinued. I quickly went to Macy’s and saw a bunch of notes that looked like this:

Miss Mink's Registry Regret : wedding charlottesville registry Registr011 registr01

Screen shot from Macy’s.com

While that screen shot is of a note on our flatware, those lovely sentences were also under every single item on our china list.

The note mentions making way for new products, but our pattern is not old. Michael Aram’s licensing deal with Waterford dates back to the summer of 2007 and our pattern, Jaipur, debuted at the Tabletop Market in New York that October.

I called Waterford right away. They told me that they didn’t discontinue our pattern and that demand actually exceeded their supply. In fact, they were increasing production of our pattern for next year. Macy’s decided on its own to stop carrying the pattern, which is kind of funny in light of how popular it is.

Within ten minutes, I had moved our entire registry over to Bed, Bath and Beyond. I was a little worried because the registry page on BB&B didn’t look as aesthetically pleasing to me and I wasn’t sure about how easy it would be to navigate as a result, but it had to be done.

My mother settled my fears when she went to the Bed, Bath and Beyond near her to buy something off the registry. She found the people in the little wedding office to be very helpful. She thought the process of buying off the BB&B registry was much easier than going into the mega Macy’s where she lives.

Anyone have any great experiences with registries? How about not-so-great experiences? Out of the places you’ve registered, which do you find the best/easiest to deal with?

How frustrating! Lately I’ve heard a few people comment on difficulties with Macy’s registries. We are registered there, but I am definitely going to keep an eye on it until the wedding.

I think Macys must have some dispute with Waterford…my waterford toasting flutes were discontinued!

@Miss Hawk: I was so disappointed. I really liked Macy’s. :(

@PinkMagnolia: VERY interesting! I might have to do some googling to read up about that!

Bed Bath is just so nice! They also store to store, so if someone buys and can’t come to your wedding, and they don’t want it shipped, you can go in store and pick it up!

Macy’s was the worst registry-avoid if possible. They did not update it - we got multiples of a lot of gifts and when some gifts were returned by the purchaser, they did not reappear on our registry. Also, their selection is limited.

Oh girl… Macy’s was the death of me. We got our everyday china there and the process of purchasing it with my soon-to-be in-laws was a disaster.

We ended up between my FMIL/FFIL, FSIL, and some aunts getting all of the china as engagement gifts because we were so scared they were going to run out and they weren’t selling most of it online. D.I.S.A.S.T.E.R. I really don’t ever want to be in a Macy’s home section again in my life.

It’s worth noting that we live on the west coast which seems to have a less expansive collection of offerings than the east coast stores. Still. Ugh.

O no! I just checked my registry and the same thing has happened to me:( And the worst of it is half of my china has already been purchased by someone (we haven’t received it yet) so unless the rest of it is purchased soon we might not get the remaining pieces. O Macys why do you do these things?!!

I’m wondering if anyone has registered for the china directly from the manufacturer. I was thinking of doing that but worried it might be difficult?

@gogogiraffes: So good to hear you liked BB&B!

@Honeycake: Wow! What a shame!

@Lexy: Did you get the same messages on your registry? Is that why everyone swarmed to get the place settings in advance?

@Westvillebride: Oh no! I’m so sorry! Was your pattern Waterford or Royal Dalton? I’m trying to figure out why they keep doing tis!

@Miss Ke Aloha: I think that’s a great idea…but I think people like that the department stores allow one list for unlike items (china, crystal, housewares).

Oh no!! That is one of my fears (and reasons why I haven’t registered yet…). Glad you were able to make the switch to BB&B!

@TinyTina: Thankfully, I moved everything just before our Save the Dates went out. Whew!

I didn’t have problems with our Macy’s registry, but apparently my family members who tried to purchase things had a terrible time. Hopefully BB&B will be a positive change.

@Mrs. Pony: I’m so sorry to hear that! I thought the Macy’s site looked great. I just bought a gift from a Macy’s registry a few months ago and thought the the transaction went smoothly…but due to previous comments, I’m worried that I bought a duplicate!

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve been debating between BB&B and Macy’s. This is definitely swinging the pendulum. FYI - my SIL (who got married last year) swears by BB&B. She returned a broken item off the registry 11 months after her wedding and had zero hassle getting a replacement. From her tales, you have up to a year after your wedding to return and can get cash back for returns instead of just credit.

@sandiegosarah: That is SO good to know. We’ve gotten some presents and I haven’t unwrapped them…I know what they are, but I didn’t think we were supposed to use anything before the wedding. Then I wondered what would happen if one of the items we’ve gotten was broken, so I opened everything. Nice to know we didn’t have to check for breakage right away.

Yes, half of them said “unavailable for purchase online” and my dear FMIL is a highly anxious person put the word out that we needed to get them ASAP.

We (Mr. & I) went with them to pick them up because we were running errands together and it turned into a three county trek to get all the plates :(

But! I love them, and it was a Macy’s exclusive pattern so registering elsewhere wasn’t possible.

I experienced the same thing! We originally set up registries at Macy’s and Crate & Barrel but after experiencing nearly all of our Macy’s registry being unavailable, we began exploring other options. We went to BBB on a whim and the registry assistant was able to move our entire Macy’s registry over to their system for us. Not only that but they kept the store open an extra hour for us while we added more things to our registry in store. As if that weren’t enough, they encouraged us to open boxes and try electronics and were wonderful with returns and duplicates. I was very very happy with them.

Macy’s might have more of the ’swank’ factor but if the customer service is terrible and guests can’t actually buy anything off the registry….what’s the ’swank’ factor worth?

Three cheers (and five stars) for Bed, Bath, & Beyond!

@Lexy: How aggravating! I can’t believe they’d do that to a pattern that was exclusively theirs!

@MissCanyon: Wow! I’m so happy to hear that the service my mother experienced seems to be the norm at BB&B. I’m so impressed!
