Hair Today…

December 27th, 2011 @ 5:49 am by Miss Turkey

and hopefully gone before June!

Unlike fellow bloggers Hawk and Uni (do you mind if I call you Uni?), I am NOT in love with my hair. I’ve gone through a number of styles in my 29 years…and some of them have been pretty rough. Don’t believe me…check it out:

I created this to be like the Transformation feature from InStyle for a team event a while back

As you can see, I used to be blond*. And tried to hold on to that color for a bit past its peak. There were many dollars spent on highlights which were probably not good for my already tough-to-manage hair.

I started growing my hair out in late 2009 for a fall 2010 wedding I was in. Let me tell you, having hair past my shoulders for the first time ever drove.me.CRAZY. As in, I went to get a haircut the day after the wedding, with bobby pins still in my hair.

Showing off the still intact hair and flowers after the wedding

We drove home 4+ hours and I went straight to the hairdresser from the car

Why do I have so much trouble with my hair? Well, it’s thick and somewhere between straight and wavy. We’re not talking beautiful laid-back, beachy waves when encountered with moisture…oh no, it just looks messy.

See? Not cute.

Also not cute - getting SOAKED on Jurassic Park when it’s 40 degrees.

It takes forEVER to dry and, oh, I have NO idea how to style the back.

Hair Today... : wedding hair philadelphia Dsc 423 DSC_423
Terrible.

I’m going to try to ensure that people only see me from the front.

I’ll stop complaining because, to be honest, I’m doing this to myself.

When I think about hair for the wedding, I absolutely love styles that require more hair than my preferred chop cut would allow. And, I’ve been really happy with updo results when I have sucked it up dealt with longer hair (I know I do not have long hair…just long for me).

This was for a gala we attended in May - so 6 months of hair ago

I really liked how it was able to be a bit unstructured (due to there being enough hair to work with)

I think the side chignon “look” works well for me since it allows me to have a less severe / more side-swept look up front and gives a little more “drama” to a typical updo. I also hear it’s easy to put in a veil!

Hair Today... : wedding hair philadelphia Dsc011302 DSC011302
Wedding chignon - I liked how my bangs were a bit “poofed”

I’m not a fan of how I look with tightly pulled back hair (especially without bangs)

Tried my hand at a self created chignon - wasn’t too shabby

So, in an attempt to be able to have a beautiful chignon with some fun detail in the back (along the same line as the gala hairdo above), I’m continuing to suffer grow my hair. This means lots of headbands, bobby pins, ponytails and hats along the way.

This is more fun than my typical weekend hats

I’m still looking for inspiration pictures to share with our wedding day hair stylist, but, if necessary, some of my previous styles will hopefully suffice to communicate the vision. However, if you’ve seen any fun, unstructured chignons, please share (along with support from the “short haired girls living with long hair” club)!

Bees - please tell me I can make it 6 more months…and will you support me if I do a PWC the day after the wedding?

*Blond or blonde??

I can totally sympathize with this. I’m a pixie cut gal through and through but for some ridiculous reason I decided I’d grow my hair out for the wedding. I’m almost to chin-length now for the first time in many years and it is driving me INSANE, and I also still have 6 months of growth to go. I will totally support your decision to get chopped the day after the wedding, because I’ll probably be doing the very same thing myself!

A little off topic, but has anyone ever told you that you look a bit like Ashley Williams? (The actress who played Victoria on How I Met Your Mother.) You totally look like her!

Back on topic - I am a perpetual grow-my-hair-long-then-chop-it-off kind of girl. It usually reaches a point when it’s long where I just can’t take it anymore, and then I go have it chopped off short. But my new husband looooves it long, so I’ve been putting off the PWC. I totally support you doing it, though!

Hello! First, I think you hair looks gorgeous its current length! Second, the chignon looks amazing with your thick hair. I think that would be a wonderful wedding look for you. Third, I’ve known a few people who got their PWC the next day. Do whatever makes you happy! Even though I liked the look of my long hair, it drove me bonkers AND was up more than it was down. I wished I could have gotten my PWC the next day, but alas, due to a busy return to life, I didn’t get around to it for 2 1/2 weeks.

Last, but certainly, not least: GO PHILS! You look adorbable in that hat by the way! I want one. =)

Good luck Turkey!

You can do it Miss Turkey! I already started growing my hair out for my cousin’s wedding next Christmas. I feel your pain. I normally only have shoulder length hair but they want it pass middle of my back and this is starting to drive me nuts. In some ways I wish my hair was as thick as yours but it just isn’t going to happen for me.

Ummm we have the same hair. I don’t mind mine long, but thats because it lives in a ponytail or braid or bun or someway to keep it up. I wish I could keep it down…

Your hair is beautiful! I especially love the ‘do for the gala. Hang in there; only 5 more months!

Btw: blond is masculine and blonde is feminine.

The chignon looks great! I am chopping my hair post-wedding, and I can’t wait.

You can do it! Last month I got tired of my long hair chopped it off to an inverted bob. I like it but now I think I should have left it long for the wedding, in June, and am growing it out again. Sigh.

I second that comment about the Jurassic Park ride! We happend to hit Orlando last January in one of the coldest January’s they’ve had in years. Boo!

As for the hair, you are fully entitled to chop it the next day. I thought of doing it on the honeymoon but then got lazy. (Of course, I don’t mind longer hair… I figure I only have so much time before little hands are tugging on it all the time and it has to go!)

@Bubu82: You’re right! She does look like ‘Victoria’!

I understand! I have the same type of hair; thick, wavy, with a tendency to get ultra-frizzy in humidity. I flat-iron mine, because it’s a quick and easy way to get it to look nice. I usually have shoulder-length hair. Right now I’m growing mine out for the wedding (June 2) and am so BORED. Ugh. It’s ok, it’s just boring. I’m ready for a change. I don’t like how it looks when it gets too long. But I also want a cute, loose side bun. We can do it!!

I haven’t had hair past my chin in years and now that my SO and I are looking at getting engaged, I’ve been trying to grow my hair out. It’s down past my shoulders now and I hate it! I want to chop it off so bad, but I’m trying to have strength, lol.
I’m right there with you Miss Turkey! Stay strong!

I think I will do a PWC The Day After. I got my hair cut short after growing it out for fiance (then he said it was ok, if I had short hair) and loved it. Then it grew really fast, and by the time I realized it was too annoyingly long, if I cut it now, I’m not sure I will have enough for a updo :( So gowing it out and suffering commences!

Well I think your hair is beautiful, but I can understand its hard to manage thing. I am growing my hair out for the wedding, I chopped it nine months ago on a whim and I am now paying the price!

@Kant: We will make it together! I have to say, once you get past chin length, post-pixie, it is a lot better. Until you hit the shoulders haha!!

@Bubu82: I haven’t hear that before, but I see it now! Thanks - I love HIMYM and Ashley’s sister is in my favorite all-time movie, “Father of the Bride”.
