Put a Bird on It

December 28th, 2011 @ 6:36 am by Miss Dalmatian

The other night, we were at dinner with Mr. Dalmatian’s coworkers discussing marketing (this is what happens when you attend the office holiday party of a start-up company) when one of them commented that if you put a bird on something, girls will buy it. This made me laugh because as I thought about my personal experience and quickly realized: It’s funny because it’s true. This point seems particularly poignant when it comes to weddings. I am quite confident that I am not the only bride who is drawn to anything with a these feathered, winged, bipedal, endothermic, egg-laying, vertebrate animal (definition of bird via Wikipedia.com). Perhaps it is because we ourselves feel like little lovebirds.

Perhaps it is because birds look so dapper in bowties.

Or perhaps it is because their houses are just so darn cute.

Whatever the appeal is, I am living proof that there is some validity to the fact that if you put a bird on it, girls will buy it. There is a birdcage on our mantel, a bird tray on the shelves in our kitchen, and the plates we eat dinner off of each night have a border of birds on a wire. I do not yet know how birds will be integrated into our big day. Perhaps our buffet will have to declare, “Tweet, tweet, time to eat!”

Are you drawn to all things birdie?

have you seen the video “Put a Bird on It”? from the TV show Portlandia? (just search it on youtube). When I was talking to Mr Elk about OOT bags and what to put on them, he said “just put a bird on it” and made me watch that video- its pretty hilarious!

YES! Our wedding started it and now I find myself collecting birds all over the place. Santa (my mom) gave me a necklace with a little birdie on it this year. I just love them :)
P.S. I have those birdie cake toppers, you can borrow them if you want.

@Miss Elk & @Miss Unicycle: I hadn’t seen that yet. Is it bad that I wanted everything in that store AFTER they put a bird on it?

As a native Portlander I fully endorse putting birds on all the things! Now it’s art! Long live Fred & Carrie.

@Miss Unicycle: That video is awesome!
I think birds make things look adorable, I had to resist several things with birds because they didn’t go with the rest of our wedding.
