Those Other Wedding Dresses

December 29th, 2011 @ 6:31 am by Mrs. Mole

Today I want to talk a little about those other wedding dresses. You know, the ones you wear to the shower, to the bachelorette party, to the rehearsal dinner, to the dinner that first night on your honeymoon. I love to wear dresses, so I had a great time shopping for ones for these occasions. In fact, I might have had more fun on these shopping trips than I did when looking for my actual wedding dress!

The first dress I found was for the rehearsal dinner. I wanted to wear something “bride-like,” but not necessarily bridal, if you get my incredibly fuzzy distinction. I ended up finding a silk-blend dress from Banana Republic in a shade of ivory. It was on sale, so I bought it in September for $38 and change. I am pairing it with a J.Crew cardigan, which I also got on sale. I may use it again with my wedding dress (after our Vegas reception, during our Milwaukee party). I’m also wearing my grandmother’s graduated pearl necklace. On my feet are my Kate Spade Ollie flats.

The next dress I found was for our casual, co-ed shower. I had to keep reminding myself that this event was going to be in December in Milwaukee, so that ruled out a lot of different styles and fabrics. I ended up finding a merino sweater dress and tights at Uniqlo while in NYC. I livened the outfit up with some accessories that I already owned. The pearl and gold necklace is from J.Crew. The gold belt is from Banana Republic. The earrings, which you admittedly cannot see, are from Express. I ended up wearing more winter-appropriate shoes, though.

I shopped in my closet for the dress that I will wear for the “bachelorette” party. I’m putting bachelorette in quotes because Mr. Mole and I are going to have a joint celebration in Vegas the Thursday night before we get married, open to anyone who is in town. We expect it will be pretty low-key, especially in Vegas terms. We will probably hit a lounge or two, maybe stop by some tables at a casino. My dress is Trina Turk’s Nora. This was another Nordstrom Rack find. My shoes are Boutique 9′s Karyl, aka my wedding heels. I’ll probably add a fitted cardigan to this look.

Last, I found an amazing “it’s-our-first-night-of-our-Mexican-honeymoon-oh-my-god-I-can’t-believe-were-really-married” dress this past weekend at Nordstrom Rack. The dress is Trina Turk’s Princeton Secret Horizon Stripe Jacquard (what a mouthful). Best thing about this dress? I got it for 85% off. The shoes are Seychelles’ Change of Venue sandals, which I also got on very deep discount. I guess it pays to shop for tropical clothing in the middle of December.

So, hive, those are my other wedding dresses. What are you planning to wear for all of these other occasions? Where did or will you shop?

Unless I get lucky and find a bunch of fabulous dresses on huge sales, I’m planning to use Rent the Runway. I rented a dress (Shoshanna Dreaming Dylan) and earrings (Azaara) for my engagement photos and they were amazing - for $65, I wore over $600 worth of clothing/jewelry (not including the engagement ring, of course :D) and didnt even have to dry clean anything.

I love all your dress picks! I am on the hunt for all these outfits too right now, and feel a big buhhhh as to where to even begin. I may have to start at Uniqlo by looking for those cute sweater dresses! I keep forgetting my shower is in Feb in NYC so that’s bound to include a foot of snow on the ground.

Love how you refer to them as “those other wedding dresses”. So true!

I also wanted a white-ish bride-like non-bridal dress for the rehearsal dinner. I love yours! So chic!

@Miss Ke Aloha: I know! Yesterday was our one-month marker. I can’t wait.
@janaeesiss: Thanks. I guess I have to thank my love of bargain shopping. ;)
@jpalm13: It was too difficult to try to keep him out, so I figured that I should just welcome him in.
@bridester: Nordstrom Rack is my jam. I rarely buy clothes anywhere else!

@Heather Rose: I have heard such good things about Rent the Runway! I have a membership, but I’ve never actually ordered from there. Any tips?
@ZeRaaashian: That’s Tom Boonen! He’s a 4 year old, 85lb rescued greyhound. We are kind of crazy dog people about him.
@Miss Porcupine: I have probably worn that sweater dress now 5 or 6 times this month. Whoops. I wish Uniqlo were in Los Angeles! Shopping there is already on the agenda for our trip to New York for our Chinese reception this summer.
@Mrs. Funnel Cake: Thanks! Now I have to admit that I am just making up excuses to buy more dresses: “Well, Mr. Mole’s parents want to host a casual dinner at their place the Thursday before the wedding, so I probably need a new dress for that…” No, Miss Mole, you probably don’t. Haha.

I escaped the cost of the extra clothes, because I didn’t get a shower, the “bachelorette” was a low-key spa day where I wore jean shorts, and I wore my scruffies for the rehearsal dinner because we were setting up our venue that day!

I do want to find a nice dress to bring on our honeymoon though - I found one at the mall the other day that was almost perfect, but a bit too big on top (small chest, it happens to me a lot!).

Love your dresses, but I have to say… the honeymoon one is my favorite! I think I need to swing by Nordstrom Rack sometimes this week. :)

Looove your rehearsal dress! I’ve been mostly hitting up eBay for my dresses.

Could you be any prettier? What great choices. I agree that your honeymoon dress is to die for! I do think my favorite part, however, was your pup joining in for the photos. :)

@Mrs. Pony: Haha, thanks! My friends often joke that I am the queen of shopping deals; too bad I wasn’t as good at getting discounts for other wedding-related expenses.
@Mrs. Cinnamon Bun: I hear you on how frustrating it is to find the perfect dress — and then find out that it doesn’t fit in one place. I started taking some of my clothes to the tailors to fix that (and luckily, it’s no where as expensive as wedding dress alterations!)

@Mrs. Trail Mix: Seriously, Nordstrom Rack is great for buying that line! I also found a Trina Turk zebra print skirt there, which I love (and Mr. Mole thinks is somewhat ridiculous). Her stuff just fits me really well.
@TinyTina: I might be going to a Rack this week too. I want cute honeymoon stuff!
@gmcurtis: Oh, ebay is a great idea! Thanks for the reminder!
@Gemstone: Aww, thanks! I think he thought that there was a chance for a walk, given my location near the door. ;)

I adore all of these dresses, and a big thank you for telling me where you got them all in case I just have to get them for myself (hehe!). Also, Tom Boone’s photo bombing is basically the best thing ever.
